The crest is somewhat similar. Jack's is a square with 4 notches, that helmet (in another shot) has a circle with 4 notches.

I think it does have a point to the plot, they weren't allowed to show us any preview footage of this episode. So it had to be important.

I would be absolutely cool with it if it was never referenced again. Being a totally unrelated story works just fine. It's like switching from a Conan the Barbarian short story and reading a Solomon Cane short story after. Both are from the same author. Both are in the same genre (pulp adventure). They just feature totally unrelated characters and settings.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few more one-off episodes like this. I signed up for an action cartoon, Spear and Fang are fun but this episode has proven they're not necessary.

I feel like they’re going to do a series of episodes that seemingly aren’t related to spear and fang until the very last one revealing it all to be back story for why all the Dino’s and cavemen are all over

        >t would be higher if they aired it at the end of the season not in the middle.
Or as the season premiere, given we had a double feature, this being the first episode, immediately followed by the sea travel one would have worked fine.

        Anonymous

I believe the main issue is the fact that most cartoon seasons are way shorter nowadays. It makes people much more receptive of fillers or episodes that don't drive the main plot in general and poorly received episode stick out way worse since creators have and are expected to make the most of around 3 hours of animation. No one would have made such a deal of this episode if season 2 had been 13 to 24 episodes long.

It's not impossible for Eldar to realize that vengeance is bad and just perpetuates a cycle. I doubt he gets killed off next episode since we see him unarmored on the giant condor with Spear and later we see him before the giant Scorpion Emperor. The animosity between Spear and him might all be a red herring towards something bigger.

It ties into the themes of educated western civilization at the time where eugenics was a popular theory that viewed black people as biologically inferior and closer to primitives than white men.
It further drives the point of the civilized white men who probably viewed themselves as superior to other races being able to regress to be more primal than someone they viewed as savage.

That's kind of the point. Primal is extremely violent but doesn't glorify violence like a dumb 80s action cartoon. Violence between humans is portrayed as tragic and disturbing. It would have been easy to make the Vikings town all raging berserkers but Genndy humanizes them to give the episode an emotional impact.

      Anonymous

It reminds me of actual Vikings in that they probably all fought to the death because they believed they would reach Valhalla in death or something like that, and you can't make peace with someone who thinks that not killing you would send them to hell.

I think it was just Genndy experimenting with his own premise. Honestly didn’t hate it, as far as breaks from formula go I found this more interesting than Vikings frankly. I like it as a stand alone, but I do wonder if it maybe could’ve been better served as an epilogue to the whole show rather than being wedged in the middle.

Well given the series was created on that concept and had a whole season and a half based on them I don't think that's unreasonable

          Anonymous

Look I wanna see spear and fang's story wrap up, I like them, but this was actually a neat short story and it sold me on the anthology idea Genndy had that I was otherwise iffy on. It was definitely a better episode than river of snakes, just comparing them one to one, and I am going to judge people upset about this as redditors cause all the complaints sound distinctly reddit, upset about not getting another episode of parasocial dino human fren simulator.

This was the first time the show's actually grossed me out since Plague of Madness, and one of only two or three times it's grossed me out total. I was surprised when I found myself making an 'Uck' noise.

Of course I did, but I only recall this ape man death actually kinda grossing me out. The other deaths were cathartic and awesome because I wanted to see ape man pieces fly after what happened to Fang.
My reaction to Rage of the Ape Men was more 'Oh ho ho" than "Uck," which is why I'm surprised I got grossed out by this tiny scene by comparison.

Reminder that this show peaked with A Cold Death since that was the only episode to really embrace the fatalist theme of "Kill or be killed" that Genndy supposedly wanted the whole show to be about. The only season 2 episode to come close was Shadow of Fate since there was a legitimate moral conflict between Red and the Celts.

I bet you that this big homie is Vidarr. The viking is praying to him for vengeance against Spear, presumably after his son is slain.

Spear and Fang kill a literal God.
      Fang dies.
Spear condess his love to Mira.
Mira tells Spear she's a lesbian.

Do you guys think the madman is how a lot of the characters view Spear and Fang? So far everyone's been horrified by how much they've decimated their opponents. They look like monsters.

It'd be interesting to see if the Mad Man's red eyes means he was also enpowered by the big Demon. Could explain why he was super-strong and could jump up into the rafters.

        Anonymous

        Yes.

I think they're is an immediate dismissal of Spear, like you don't belong here. Then an anger that you can't just kill him. Then a fear that oh shit you might actually die.

Still my mind goes back to the Celts and how even with those differences they still took him in.

        Anonymous

This is exactly how most people in the Viking village would have seen Spear. Only the bear cavalry at the beginning could have understood his intention was to free the slaves and escape unnoticed. To everyone else he was an insane violent intruder just there to kill their families.

They didn't, if they had, the monks would likely not have seen the need to preserve their mythology and to adapt Christian stories to appeal to them.
Would you say the Hellenic gods were demonic as well? In spite of that the church chose to allow such names to remain as those of the planets, then incorporate some deities as saints.

I would actually consider myself a Christian. I think the syncretization that took place is proof that not all things pagan were inherently demonic, but rather misguided.

Is t Vidarr like a spirit/god of vengeance? So wouldn’t it be fitting for him to look more demonic?

          Anonymous

I mean I'm not super well read on Norse mythological figures but I think he's supposed to be a just form of vengeance, seeing as he slays Fenrir to avenge his father, rather than an evil form. The norse also seemed to have a culturally positive few of paying debts with blood, seeing as holmgangs were a thing.
The idea of him being Surtr that an anon posited earlier makes more sense to me personally, but I'm perhaps an apologist.

This is not something that could be considered healthy and I'm not going to listen to a frothing, raving madman just because he calls me a cuck.
If anything, your desire to die on the hill of defending a relationship which would result in no functional offspring, makes you the cuck.

          Anonymous

This man knows what's up. Asylums back then had treatment boil down to two options. First was drilling into your brain and cutting parts out till you "calmed down" and the second was torturing you in new and inventive ways till you behaved and broke your bad behavior.
The latter modern day practices have shown to basically be pre ordering a suicide as you still have your "improper" impulse and a new ingrained impulse not to do the first impulse. 2 conflicting needs does not do a body good
This is if the asylum didn't take the third option of locking you up and borderline forgetting you exist. Think solitary but without the nice standard of prison cells >.>

I could see spear besting him cause Jack has been bested by powerful and savage combatants before, like the guardian or the hunters, and he'd have to rely on a weapon that isn't his sword as I don't believe Spear has an evil nature and would not be harmed by it.
The most morally questionable thing he's done is kill a kid who attacked him first on accident, hardly evil, if regrettable.
In melee I could see Jack being overwhelmed but if Jack has his samurai kit with the machine gun and the handgun I don't think Spear is ever even getting close enough to do melee.

I think Jack is favored against season 1 Spear and Roided Spear, Jack's dealt with powerful brutes before, and his combat experience and martial arts will give him a clear edge. Season 2 spear feels like a different beast all together. He takes down an entire village of Viking warriors and appears like some kind of demi-god compared to the modern humans. I have to see how the fight between Spear and the Viking chief goes, and how he does against a trained opponent.

That past surprised me when I first saw it. I figured that Spear was going to block the sword by holding his arm up and catching the slaver’s arm, the maybe breaking his wrist or something.

But instead Spear just caught his wrist in his mouth and bit out a chunk.

Why does everyone suck so hard at using firearms?

Those guns came from a display case, so they were likely made years prior to 1890.
Guns were not particularly accurate in that century and the men firing them seem to have little practice and are under duress.

They're aristocrats who've probably never fired more than like 20 shots in a whole year
        [...]
From a very far distance that might be true, but even a 10moa gun (which is absolutely atrocious accuracy even for pre-1890's standards) will hit whatever you're aiming at pretty much perfectly within like the 10m they were shooting at.

        [...]
Yeah and keep in mind, these guys are historians and collectors. Real intellectual types. They collect old guns but they've probably never fired one in their lives besides the occasional fancy hunting trip.

Hitting a moving target is much harder than it looks.

I definitely believe roided spear would lose definitively to Jack because while that bloodlust and likely demonic energy overtakes him, the sword would work perfectly. Similar to when Jack killed the corrupted sheep.

      Anonymous

Just finished. I loved it but I can see why people didn't like it.
      1) We were just witnessing Spear and Fang destroy a viking village and spawn two arch-nemsis enemies. Why the frick are we in 1890 England now?
      2) There was a weird 'humor' that didn't match the tone. Like the scene where the inmate used one of the gentlemen as a human shield and played peekaboo with the others. Or the very last scene of "THERE YOU HAVE IT"
      3) The ending. Seriously it could've just ended quietly. With Lord Darington realizing what had just happened. We didn't need a random Charles screaming "AND THERE WE HAVE IT!" killing the mood.

I love dark humor and thought both scenes were funny as frick. I laughter my ass off at darwin gloating at the end while covered in blood and a chunk of him bitten off lmfao
