I think it does have a point to the plot, they weren't allowed to show us any preview footage of this episode. So it had to be important.
I would be absolutely cool with it if it was never referenced again. Being a totally unrelated story works just fine. It's like switching from a Conan the Barbarian short story and reading a Solomon Cane short story after. Both are from the same author. Both are in the same genre (pulp adventure). They just feature totally unrelated characters and settings.
I wouldn't mind seeing a few more one-off episodes like this. I signed up for an action cartoon, Spear and Fang are fun but this episode has proven they're not necessary.
I feel like they’re going to do a series of episodes that seemingly aren’t related to spear and fang until the very last one revealing it all to be back story for why all the Dino’s and cavemen are all over

Like I said the feedback is going to be tainted by the fact that they bait and switched us. The episode was definitely good but they pissed a lot of people off that way.

Or as the season premiere, given we had a double feature, this being the first episode, immediately followed by the sea travel one would have worked fine.
I believe the main issue is the fact that most cartoon seasons are way shorter nowadays. It makes people much more receptive of fillers or episodes that don't drive the main plot in general and poorly received episode stick out way worse since creators have and are expected to make the most of around 3 hours of animation. No one would have made such a deal of this episode if season 2 had been 13 to 24 episodes long.

It's not impossible for Eldar to realize that vengeance is bad and just perpetuates a cycle. I doubt he gets killed off next episode since we see him unarmored on the giant condor with Spear and later we see him before the giant Scorpion Emperor. The animosity between Spear and him might all be a red herring towards something bigger.

That's kind of the point. Primal is extremely violent but doesn't glorify violence like a dumb 80s action cartoon. Violence between humans is portrayed as tragic and disturbing. It would have been easy to make the Vikings town all raging berserkers but Genndy humanizes them to give the episode an emotional impact.
It reminds me of actual Vikings in that they probably all fought to the death because they believed they would reach Valhalla in death or something like that, and you can't make peace with someone who thinks that not killing you would send them to hell.
The Vikings pretty much did exactly what spear and fang did to who knows how many other villages, they’re slavers who raided and murdered anyone they couldn’t put in chains.

I think it was just Genndy experimenting with his own premise. Honestly didn’t hate it, as far as breaks from formula go I found this more interesting than Vikings frankly. I like it as a stand alone, but I do wonder if it maybe could’ve been better served as an epilogue to the whole show rather than being wedged in the middle.
Charles's "And there you have it" is one of the best punchline endings I've ever seen.

I don’t even think the reception is love or hate it. From what I’ve seen it’s all over the place. Ive seen a lot of love and hate, but also a lot of people saying it was ok.
This was the first time the show's actually grossed me out since Plague of Madness, and one of only two or three times it's grossed me out total. I was surprised when I found myself making an 'Uck' noise.

Reminder that this show peaked with A Cold Death since that was the only episode to really embrace the fatalist theme of "Kill or be killed" that Genndy supposedly wanted the whole show to be about. The only season 2 episode to come close was Shadow of Fate since there was a legitimate moral conflict between Red and the Celts.

This episode had absolutely nothing to do with Spear and Fang's story and I won't listen to any cope that says otherwise, but I actually liked it in and of itself. Should've been a short film, or something.

Aside from the theme that people can go monke mode, don't see a big chance that it's related at all. However it does make me want to see Genndy & the gang to just do more content. Imagine if this was some eldritch horror tv show, or even globe-trotting adventures a la Amazing Stories. Could really use this kind of quality in something that isn't "kid has magic/scifi powers" show.

I mean I'm not super well read on Norse mythological figures but I think he's supposed to be a just form of vengeance, seeing as he slays Fenrir to avenge his father, rather than an evil form. I suspect that while we watch this side story, the setting is changing in some drastic way for Spear and the gang. Just a way of letting some time pass for us while time passes for them. Perhaps the next time we see them, they will have settled down in some way.

I could see spear besting him cause Jack has been bested by powerful and savage combatants before, like the guardian or the hunters, and he'd have to rely on a weapon that isn't his sword as I don't believe Spear has an evil nature and would not be harmed by it.
The most morally questionable thing he's done is kill a kid who attacked him first on accident, hardly evil, if regrettable.
In melee I could see Jack being overwhelmed but if Jack has his samurai kit with the machine gun and the handgun I don't think Spear is ever even getting close enough to do melee.

I think Jack is favored against season 1 Spear and Roided Spear, Jack's dealt with powerful brutes before, and his combat experience and martial arts will give him a clear edge. Season 2 spear feels like a different beast all together. He takes down an entire village of Viking warriors and appears like some kind of demi-god compared to the modern humans. I have to see how the fight between Spear and the Viking chief goes, and how he does against a trained opponent.

From a very far distance that might be true, but even a 10moa gun (which is absolutely atrocious accuracy even for pre-1890's standards) will hit whatever you're aiming at pretty much perfectly within like the 10m they were shooting at.

Just finished. I loved it but I can see why people didn't like it.
1) We were just witnessing Spear and Fang destroy a viking village and spawn two arch-nemsis enemies. Why the frick are we in 1890 England now?
2) There was a weird 'humor' that didn't match the tone. Like the scene where the inmate used one of the gentlemen as a human shield and played peekaboo with the others. Or the very last scene of "THERE YOU HAVE IT"
3) The ending. Seriously it could've just ended quietly. With Lord Darington realizing what had just happened. We didn't need a random Charles screaming "AND THERE WE HAVE IT!" killing the mood.
