they are solid 8/10 blockbusters. I'll admit that they should be highly regarded in terms of blockbusters, but at the end of the day they are still just crowdpleasing popcorn flicks. there is no art here. there are many films, even those still being made today, that I would rate higher

I'll would list a bunch, but I can almost guarantee you'll disregard them all as "pretentious bullshit". if you're talking blockbusters on that level, then I will agree that there are no recent films that come close

It takes lotr and reduces it to what is basically not altogether too offensive blockbuster schlock (unless you're Christopher), but I think there's a lot of genuine artistry to the movies when it comes to things like the costumes and the bigatures and the score.

Great, especially if you're looking for that type of romantic pairing, which is extremely rare. Aside from that it is quirky in the best way possible, pleasant, art-comedy, if that's a thing. It's almost as if someone took Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and inverted pretty much everything about it, making the story modern and somewhat mundane, but in a very tasteful way. I'd easily rate it 8/10 and above, I can't think of another film that comes close. Maybe a Wes Anderson film? I watched it twice in one week and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. 🙂
