One of the conceits of this setting is that most of the humanoid AIs' processing power goes into simply maintaining sentience, and so they don't actually turn out to have faster information processing capability than standard human beings. Or maybe that's just what they'd want us to think.
Yeah, but think of how much modern society is essentially doing manual labor to cross the barrier of transferring thoughts into digital signals. A keyboard is incredibly slow and clumsy, to the point I could think these sentences a hundred times before I could finish typing them. An AI is presumably far more adroit so even if their processing is on par, their synthesis with digital systems is not.
