It's weird, it's like he wanted a time jump, but he also wanted the characters to continue talking about the internet cow mom shit as though it just happened yesterday.
So he just decided to do both... in the same comic.
believe me, it's weird that the timeskip exists but as a segue it makes sense. There's no reason for the characters to say "it's been months since the last time the readers saw us". Jeph has to tie it back to some event we as readers just saw, even though in canon other events have occurred. The lack of seasons and life events means this is honestly the cleanest way to establish a timeskip.

Actual answer: Jeph has intentionally homogenized his art style to keep it as simple to draw as possible. He's always had a bad habit of blending designs he used frequently but the past few years it's gone from habit to design decision. Everyone looks pretty much like the same metrosexual 20something regardless of build, age, or gender.
