Real talk: TLJ was better than all the nu-SW movies, and it would've been a great movie if it ended with Kylo uniting with Ray and them abandoning the good vs evil/Jedi vs dark side mentality, cutting to black as Kylo reaches his hand out.

Rogue One is also the second worst nu-SW film next to third one.

Lucas would not have left him there or killed him off. Him starting there is fine, him staying there and killing himself using a force trick Snoke does twice earlier in the same film with 2 people at once that's the problem.

Had they made him anywhere near Kurtz that may have been thought provoking as I can see a broken Luke getting more and more hardcore to save his friends, but he was nothing like that.

Hell come to think of it, Luke slowly becoming jaded over the chaos spawned by killing the Emperor and plunging the galaxy into chaos would have been interesting.

Yes this is a message that was sorely needed in a trilogy with an even worse mary sue protagonist than Luke was. At lest Luke had flaws. Can't wait for it to pay off when they totally deconstruct Rey, because of course they'd do that, because nothing else but making a good story went into any of this decision making.

Rey is meant to be the fans who grew up idolizing Luke and the other heroes since her real parents were absent. You're literally calling yourself a mary sue.

The entire OG trilogy is Luke rising up to become the idealized vision though. He already lived up to expectations; 8 is him no longer maintaining those expectations

That's a bullshit cop out and not even close to what actually happened.
Luke is the guy who refused to kill Vader who was basically space Hitler and personally responsible for the deaths of millions because there could have been some good in him still. You want me to believe that same guy was going to kill his own nephew in his sleep because he thinks he might do bad things in the future? The problem is not that Luke didn't live up to some idealized vision, it's that he acted in a way completely opposite to his established character.

This kind of mindset stems from these people not having any principles or integrity themselves, so they see any representation of that as "unrealistic" and something that needs to be torn down to teach people a lesson. They think anyone who shows these traits, real or fictional, must be a secret hypocrite because they cannot fathom anyone actually being like that. They are projecting their own vileness.

Luke Skywalker isn't the problem with the sequel trilogy and it's not a female lead either. The fundamental error in the trilogy is the lack of cohesive vision. A single director should have been handed control of the three movies to write the characters and plotlines in a way that makes sense. If they want to do a whole new thing with snoke and kylo ren then that's fine; give them a story and lore that builds towards a conclusion. If you want to make the trilogy about sheev coming back like a vengeful ghost to corrupt the new generation that's also fine; write with that goal in mind and a conclusion that makes sense.
The movies as they stand now are a complete mess, plotlines are dropped between films with little explanation and palpatine is shoehorned into the last movie in a terrible retcon that barely makes sense (his revival is explained in a fortnite event or something?). If you're buying a franchise for a gorillion dollars then do the legwork and have a decent idea of how the trilogy should look. I'm still experiencing shellshock from these movies and how completely baffling and inconsistent the trilogy was

      >Luke Skywalker isn't the problem with the sequel trilogy
You're right, but his treatment, the attitude they have towards the character, and the way they handled the fan blowback to it are all as significant parts of why the franchise collapsed as the ST's plot being ad-libbed.

      >Lucas would not have . . . killed him off

Yeah you'll have to pardon how I don't take whatever Yidsney says about it seriously. Lol they won't even officially cancel Rian's trilogy.

    >Kylo fully succumbs to the Dark Side of his own will and slaughters the school

It's that easy to keep the relatively same plotline whilst keeping the integrity of the OG (Luke) and improving the villain (Kylo)
