In my opinion this is one of the greatest movies ever made. Imaginative, thrilling story, great character, perfect pacing, and the perfect melding of humor into a serious tale.

Action/sci-fi, just with lots of gore. I consider it, Aliens and Predator to all be in this genre.

alien and aliens are two total different genres
I think the Thing is the happy medium between the two. Not quite as slow-burn suspenseful as Alien, not quite as balls-out action as Aliens.
There's barely any action, it feels closer to Alien than Aliens

besides some dated special effects it is a near flawless film i think. the practical effects are some of my favourite ever and rival the thing.
