          I've not heard of that but mine definitely can't, I use a Sony BDP-S1700 that I got modded to be region free and it plays mkv files just fine

              Are you sure it just didn't support the codec you were using? x264 had only been out a few years at that point so it wouldn't surprise me if your player only support xvid at that point.

    Best investment I ever made in that regard was a Firestick. Amazon Botnet, sure, but the VLC app plays all the files from the NAS or simple PC shared folders. The built in app on my "smart" tv was always a gamble with formats.
    Plus, Youtube app with content tagging (skips ads, sponsor segments, intros, etc).
