Jay seems really disimissive of Popeye in this. The original cartoons still stand the test of time today. The studio also made the superman shorts. Some of the greatest animated shorts are Popeye shorts and Jay lumps him in with Garfield. RLM have always been ignorant of film history though.
I don't really agree with that. Most of the Popeye cartoons are showing funny animation and that's the joke. The plots to the shorts are basically nonexistent and all the writing is identical and far too formulaic between shorts. It laid a great foundation, but Looney Tunes and the like make it look like 'train approaching camera' because they actually use the animation as a foundation for the humor and not the humor in and of itself.
Right, and it is good animation, but it was simply left in the dust by shorts like Looney Tunes that did everything Popeye did but better and with more around it.
The Fleischer shorts are actually much better than you make them out to be. Once the studio moved from New York to Hollywood that's when the cartoons went to shit and because generic. So around the 40s and the World War 2 era. Incredibly boring and souless just trying to rip off Tex Avery and Chuck Jones cartoons.
There were also Popeye cartoons in the 60s (awful animation) and Popeye and Son in the 80s. The comic strip also went from Segar to his death, then his apprentice Bud Sagendorf took over, and other artists later applied their talent in the 60s and 70s like Bobby London. Fantagraphics has also been publishing the strips in compilations for decades. Their current run is the Sunday color strips. I have the previous collection that also had the black and white weekday strips.
A few years after that there was also a Popeye comeback with new comics by different artists and writers and the failed Gendy film (good, it was going to be shit) and the absolute garbage YouTube shorts made for babies.

Jay seems really disimissive of Popeye in this. The original cartoons still stand the test of time today. The studio also made the superman shorts. Some of the greatest animated shorts are Popeye shorts and Jay lumps him in with Garfield. RLM have always been ignorant of film history though.
I don't really agree with that. Most of the Popeye cartoons are showing funny animation and that's the joke. The plots to the shorts are basically nonexistent and all the writing is identical and far too formulaic between shorts. It laid a great foundation, but Looney Tunes and the like make it look like 'train approaching camera' because they actually use the animation as a foundation for the humor and not the humor in and of itself.

There were also Popeye cartoons in the 60s (awful animation) and Popeye and Son in the 80s. The comic strip also went from Segar to his death, then his apprentice Bud Sagendorf took over, and other artists later applied their talent in the 60s and 70s like Bobby London. Fantagraphics has also been publishing the strips in compilations for decades. Their current run is the Sunday color strips. I have the previous collection that also had the black and white weekday strips.
A few years after that there was also a Popeye comeback with new comics by different artists and writers and the failed Gendy film (good, it was going to be shit) and the absolute garbage YouTube shorts made for babies.

Movie is kind of underrated, but I get the feeling that neither of them were prepared to really talk about it or look more deeply into it. I don't know, if you are going to do a in-depth review of an older movie, shouldn't you read up on it? Maybe watch it more than once and not be half-bored while doing so?
I mean, this popeye movie is so bizarre that you can focus on a lot of details about both the production and what Altman was going for, but Jay for being the self-acclaimed "film buff" seems to be entirely unwilling to look into the movie, or even just have fun with it.
