It was great casting. The movie bombed because it was terrible. Idris Elba showed up every day and did exactly what he was asked to do.

        >actor shows up to contractual obligation and dances as commanded
This is the bar you've set? He's been great in plenty of roles, but he was terrible in this. Matthew McConaughey wasn't a good casting either.

But yeah casting aside the movie was doomed from the start

Ruined the best book series of all time (1-4). To be fair, so did Stephen King, who rushed out some trite after it. It should have outlived him.

When he helped add some lore for the Marvel series he mentioned something about future revisements since he'd already done a revised version of The Gunslinger. I kinda always got the feeling he had that in mind for DT, since he always talked about how he kinda forced the ending on those because he was having a real struggle with his mortality after his accident and also the fact that he still touches on it in his newer books. Unfortunately though, the interview I read he specifically said he didn't think there was any better ending than the one he wrote in DT 7, so no one should hope for some kind of change there, which was something I was specifically hoping for.

The ending to Book 7 is good. The book has a lot of issues but the ending isn't one of them.

Lots of people missed a key detail.
That was not Roland from the books.
Everyone knows what happened when Roland made it to the top of the tower, and that he had made it there many times before.
Roland is doomed to make the journey for eternity.
Every time he makes it to the top and opens the door, he is assaulted by the memories of every time he has completed the journey previously.
Every time he completes it, the door he goes through changes him in some way, and makes him do the whole thing over again from the first line of the first book with no memory of the previous time, until he again opens the door.
That is what this one was. Roland always faces similar challenges, and collects similar people in his quest. The tower just makes it harder on him every time in it's quest to craft the perfect eternal guardian.
The Tower just made him black this time.
Look, there's no way I am going to doxx myself to prove this to you people.
I am on good terms with a few people who worked on this adaptation. This movie was made with the idea that fans of the source material would get the concept, and unfortunately they did not make it clear enough that this was one of the loops of the story revealed at the end of the last book.
    Sorry about that.

      >Roland's fate is to be reborn as a nogger
Truly, there has never been a more PUNISHED character. Plus, it's insane to make a mass audience movie and hinge it on the understanding of a small group of fans. Come on now.

The idea was to alienate the people in Roland's world even more from him.
There were very few black people in the original story, and I was mad as shit that Detta/Odetta/Susannah was an omitted character in the movie.
Not because she was black, but because the crew had to deal with her madness for two books before they fixed her.
There were a few instances where local people in the books treated Susannah differently because they were put off by her black skin, a near unheard of thing in that world.
A friend who was more directly knowledgeable about the making of the movie because he was directly involved in it told me that they wanted references to Roland having completed this journey before in different forms with different people helping him, in dreams Roland had while asleep that fade rapidly when he wakes up, leaving him with the knowledge that he MUST complete the journey.
But those were cut from the movie because some butthole decided that audiences would just be more confused.
I'm not saying the movie was good. I'm saying that the people making it had the right idea but were fricked by studios wanting it dumbed down for mass audiences into a western thriller and focusing on cool shots and le black guy.
They had the right idea to start with, and it mutated by force into what it is now.

In many of the books, locals in the areas treated men with the title of Gunslinger with reverence, as near royalty, and went out of their way to help them, even if it killed them.
The idea was that since the title Gunslinger could not be removed from Roland because that was a required part of the legend, and HAD to be a part of Roland for the story to work, making him LOOK different than most people in that world was a good way to throw a wrench in the works of Roland succeeding.
The concept works, but again, the story that makes it off the cutting room floor is too often a bastardized shitty version of the original idea.

Detta was annoying as frick, not including Eddie was the slap in the face. The dynamic between him and Roland made the story. Detta was just the typical angry negress hero.

Yeah, Roland and Eddie had amazing arcs that set the series apart from other fantasy. Detta's arc was just
            >Hmmmph, I is better than you, whitey! (because I'm insane and an unpredictable schizoid)
            to
            >Hmmmph, I AM better than you, cute white boy! (Because of black girl magic)

More shit the Tower dumped on him to make the journey harder.
              >We're gonna give him a schizo black supremacist that hates his guts for the color of his skin and make him train her because we're going to give him a vision that he needs her to complete his quest.
Wow, that's fricked and gonna be something to overcome.
              >We're not done yet. We're also gonna chop her legs off and later on make him carry her around on his back.
The Tower is fricking sadistic as shit.

        Similar, I'd say.
Except the Doctor figures it all out and chooses to die rather than reveal the secret.
Roland doesn't remember it all until he is going through the door and it is too late to leave and go on elsewhere with his life.
Both are trapped by an implacable, unstoppable mechanism, but only the Doctor knows it and can do anything about it one way or the other.
        Roland is just screwed.
