It's kind of crazy how hard they shit the bed with the ending. It's like Game of Thrones where most people were just fine with completely fine with forgetting all the time they invested in it never happened.

No, because just before the end of season 2, I dropped the series like a bad deuce after taco bell. I've never regretted my decision, especially based on the shit I saw come out in the threads after. Frick this gay noise and it's inability to tell a coherent story.

Don't lie. This fandom was infested with fujoshit, inside and out, from the very beginning. Het stuff was a drop in the otherwise homosexual ocean.

The seething over it was great. Also this show was also trash. Bad pacing from the start, characters who never grew, I don't know how people think the first 1-3 seasons were good when they just weren't.

VLD and its fandom were really something else.

Nah, they have nothing on ATLA and LoK's fanbases. VLD's base didn't send constant death threats to the devs over not making their ships canon.

Do you not remember that the fanbase did send deaththreats over klance and that one time they literally got hacked over it and someone stole sensitive documents.

They still do that shit. They haven't stopped baiting people with gay chicken but they have stopped interacting with the fanbase to such an unhealthy level.

You know you fricked up your ending BIGTIME when you have to last-minute slap in a single-frame wedding in the hopes of making things slightly less inexcusably bad.

The production history of Voltron makes for a better story than what we got for an ending.

They originally planned to kill him. They also originally planned to have him be gay, then decided "gay dude that died" wasn't great representation, so they didn't bother pushing to make him gay and just wrote a plan for him to die. Then the suits said "no, you can't, he's soldier man, the toy target demographic little boys want to be him, you can't kill him."

So Shiro lived. The writers were still thinking of him as gay and wanted it to be part of his story. Hell they had a whole idea about how he had a boyfriend back home that he was trying to get back to. But corporate kept shooting the idea down. They tried over and over and kept getting "no" as a response. Not able to do "Shiro wants to get home to be reunited with his boyfriend" they instead went with "Shiro had a close friend, a copilot, and when he gets home he finds out the copilot died."

Then out of the fricking blue corporate went "fine, he can be gay." The crew were left in a pickle, they finally had permission for gay Shiro, but the stuff about him returning home was already finished and animated. They couldn't just squeeze in a story about a boyfriend. So someone had the bright idea of redoing dialogue for the dead copilot stuff to make him Shiro's boyfriend. Seemed brilliant at the time.

They'd spent so long fighting for the character to be gay they'd convinced themselves that ANYTHING was cause for a celebration, and never asked themselves "hey, are people going to like finding out that Shiro's gay if the whole story is going to be that his boyfriend frickin' died offscreen?"

When they realized they'd fricked up with that they hastily tried to fix other thing they realized wouldn't go over well in the final season, even adding a wedding. And in the end it didn't matter because the ending just fricking sucked so hard a gay wedding couldn't fix it. Stupid, unsatisfying, too many plot threads going nowhere.

I get that fighting for gay representation is good, but if your story suffers because of it, maybe don’t make the effort. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a character arc get wrecked over a desperate need to insert rep.

Of course, there were plenty of other exec interferences that caused problems. I think if Shiro died as the writers initially wanted, the show could have more or less been overall decent. But the show took a sharp nosedive once season 2 ended and never recovered.

Well I mean it's a mess, innit? It wasn't just fighting over rep, it was every step of the way running into things from the corporate overlords.

"We're gonna kill him, we have lots of plans for what'll happen after he's dea-"
        "You can't."
"...Right, okay, well then we're going to do something about him being the older member of the cast. He's left someone he loves back home, a boyfriend who-"
        "No."
"Right. Okay, well then, still think the best thing to do with him would be acknowledging that he's older and more mature. So how about a story where he gets home only to find his old best friend died as a resu-"
"Actually you can do the gay thing."
"........Ffffffine, okay. Huh, a bit late but maybe we can edit..."

It is. Really, keeping Shiro alive was the most catastrophic part. Keith could never grow into being the true leader of Voltron and unite the team. So you end up with a collection of characters who never really grow and are just together because they have to be for the most part. They’re less a found family and more like reluctant colleagues.

            Anonymous

Well the Keith stuff got fricked over too. VA was unavailable for ridiculous lengths of time.
I know some people find that implausible, but if writers go "it's the damndest thing, the VA was unavailable and we had to write so the character had less scenes" and the VA doesn't go "hey, that's a lie!" then I'm assuming it really happened and it was just a weird shitty situation.

And the crazy thing is none of that was THE thing that ruined the show's rep in the end. They just had a shit-tier ending and were so goddamn stupid they even did a timeskip ruining any hope of a "We'll fix it!" movie or anything.

              >VA was unavailable for ridiculous lengths of time.

This is why shows need to stop getting celebs to voice characters.

In fairness, even if they had a good ending planned from the beginning, they couldn’t exactly carry it out due to all the nonsense that happened. The best thing for the show would have been cancelling the show at season 2, putting everyone out of their misery.

Moral of the story is don't put gays in your work. Take the smarmy comments and snide articles; it's better than the alternative of the LGBTWTF crowd actually taking an interest in your story and characters.

Honestly after the mall episode I pretty much just dropped the show, while the episode was fun it just showcased that they didn’t give a shit about the Voltron premise
