Nah, I'm a UFO autist, I cared more about how Hynek was portrayed than the person portraying him. That said, good job, he was charming as frick. Deserved a less boring sidekick.

The COVID was a cover, cancellation was actually because they wanted to bring on Christian Bale as Jacques Vallee and it was eating into their entire season's budget

among other factors - the stars aligned - but without any one factor it would be forgotten. You could also call it something like unexpected warmth or softness, well portrayed. I just watched one for example where when Scully says her usual scepticism you can really see him get butthurt

Lot of it looked cheap. I quit when the general talks with captain to ruin the doctors experiment. Seemed like an unnecessary level of tedium. The battle with the DoD and general was just unneeded.
Stories don't need 20 points of contention and drama. Why were there Russian spies that hated each other while one started to like the wife and tried to romance the captain?
Unnecessary. At the very least unnecessary for the first season.

he had a few good moments, mainly in scenes about his sister, but there were really bad performances like the episode where he remembers his past life.
      >Mulder has himself hypnotized and recalls a time when he was a israeli woman with a son

I really doubt THAT was the main reason behind X-Files popularity.

no as I said it's one factor, but in the first season it was quite important because scully and mulder are reversed gender stereotypes, so she's le rational and he's intuitive and sulky, so you needed someone who was able to do 'vulnerability' without being a wuss and he hit it just as needed

If you enjoy in the comedy episodes (you're a redditor and) you deflated the show's stakes for yourself so of course you don't feel moved by its character's strungle

We've enjoyed the show since before you were even born. When you've done that you find out what the most loved episodes are without having to look it up on wikipedia like you kids do. Now run along and learn to write proper English before you continue posting.

So do you think if the show was exactly as it was but Mulder was played by (suitably aged) Aidan Gillen, it would do the same 20M viewers?

X-Files was a massive hit because it was a well made, well written show that perfectly blended conspiracy with skepticism. Mulder saw conspiracies everywhere, he was taken seriously (even if people didn't believe what he was saying) and a lot of the time he was right, even if he would at times go about trying to convince people in bad or inappropriate ways. Scully was more of a normal person who didn't think everything was a conspiracy but was able to be convinced when the evidence was right in front of her and everything added up; on the other hand, wasn't such a blind normie that she was irrationally stuck in her ways. She was a counter to Mulder's zealousness.
It had frick all to do with David Duchovny's acting, you dumb butthole.
