Rewrite ROTJ without the 2nd death star

Seems kinda lazy bringing it back, what else could Lucas have done?

The empire is amassing it’s forces above a small moon over Endor hosting the Emperor himself. It is the staging point for an invasion of the senate to obliterate all resistance to the Emperor in the senate and the rapidly growing rebel alliance. Many Bothans died to bring us this information, the Emperors capital ship is the Star destroyer invictus, a massive Capitol ship. The rebel fleet is about to launch a surprise attack in a last ditch effort to end the conflict once and for all.

    >Deathstar version 2 looks like a shitty version of the first version
    >It has more firepower

This puzzled me as a kid. Let's just say it was an interesting artistical choice. You can't say they rebuild it from the scraps of the old one, because the old one got blown into a million pieces. It's just weird. Is there an explanation for it?

That analogy is disingenious though. A more proper analogy would be, imagine if T-1000 behaved and looked exactly the same way as it does throughout the movie, except due to limited quantity of materials or glitch in the time travel portal he must always miss one limp due to limited capacity of liquid metal he has, so in most scenes he's missing a leg or missing an arm whenever he impersonates someone. Would that make him less scary to you?

I'll give it a very quick shot:
    >Everything at the start regarding Han Solo's rescue is the same, except of course for the scene of Emperor and Vader boarding new Death Star
    >Once Han is rescued Mon Mothma debriefs main characters about recent development
    >Emperor announced execution of Darth Vader, for recent streak of failures pertaining Luke Skywalker and on suspicion of treason due to his relation to Luke
    >Rebels know where execution will take place (because Emperor leaked it himself), but they don't buy it, they know it's a trap, but Luke is not sure, he knows this is bait specifically to lure him out, but he both believes that Emperor wants to lure him out and will kill Vader for real
    >His friends agree to launch the operation with him where they meet Ewoks and find shield generator they assume is for Emperor's vessel where execution will take place
    >Luke approaches his friends with a plan, he will give himself up to rescue his father from inside, while they convince rest of Rebels that this is their best shot at Emperor who is outside of heart of Empire and they will destroy his vessel's powerful shield generator
    >Emperor's ruse was that he was counting on it and as Rebels approach him they find out the shield generator wasn't meant to protect his vessel, the shield generator instead locked Rebels into an arena with Empire's strongest vessels in the galaxy to completely wipe out forces Rebels accumulated following their string of successes after Luke blew up Death Star.
Rest is roughly the same, except the Millenium Falcon is used to explain how Luke escaped from Emperor's ship making a very last second jump before vessel explodes. Ewoks blow up the generator allowing Rebels to escape. Empire is paralized by sudden death of the Emperor.

The Empire's illusion of permanence while somewhat strengthened by the Hoth victory has been irreparably damaged by the Yavin cataclysm. By now Rebel political cadres are competing with the decadent, corrupt, calcified Imperial blue blooded dominated bureaucracy inherited from the old Republic. The people are fed up. Mass demonstrations have sprung up all over the Galactic Empire. Stormtroopers and Imperial Police cannot handle the situation. Coruscant and numerous sectors under martial law and curfew. The Emperor has retreated to a Camp David of sorts, a shangri-la in space. Many Bothans died to bring that information. A small rebel fleet and commando team must strike at the emperor's retreat to overthrow the Empire once in for all.

funny how its actually not that hard to change the death star part but keep everything else in tact. lucas really did get lazy at the end. i like what i've read here. another idea could've been basically using some of what the sequel trilogy (barf) did, instead of a DSII, palps is putting together an army on some distant planet and loading empire fleets to attack rebel bases and planets, sort of aotc redux but actually good. i'll always laugh when i hear lynch talk about how he was offered rotj and said hell no: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJQ4vCu-S0U

    >Seems kinda lazy bringing it back

The Death Star II was fine in ROTJ. Its a readily identifiable threat so you don't need to waste a lot of story time developing it letting them focus on other conflicts, its also used and destroyed in a sufficiently different manner than it is in the first film that it doesn't feel repetitive.

Disney Wars on the other hand definitely needed to do something new. Starkiller base being able to fire a laser instantly across the galaxy is stupid and slamming a Death Star laser on a Star Destroyer model in Disney Wars 9 was lazy and stupid.

    There's really no satisfactory resolution.
They need to bring Vader, Luke, and Palpatine together for a final scene to end the conflict.
Palpatine only left Coruscant to see the Death Star and watch the trap play out.
Coruscant would've been too expensive to produce.

I think the movie shot itself in the foot with Han being captured. That plot has to be resolved before the story goes forward.

You could have them discover the location of Byss and Luke goes there/is captured to confront Palpatine, but that leaves little for the rest of the cast.

Surely it could of had the budget at that point, following two of the most popular movies in history, how hard would doing some background paintings of corocaunt city have been?

        Anonymous

It's not just the matte paintings, they would need a fairly dense cityscape model built up and it would still probably be questionable.

        Anonymous

That doesn't resolve the plot issue.
        >Han is captured and must be rescued.

How do they know that he's there, at that time?
How do they know they can defeat him and Vader?
