Back in season three the fandom was swarmed by morons who only liked Pickle Rick. Then most people got plebfiltered by season five. Now the show's facing a tough situation with the recast. I expect it to make it through though.
I missed the Szechuan sauce controversy because I don’t pay attention to shit. Was there one specific incident, or was if just that fans were unpleasant when they ran out of sauce in general?

This is what I expected going into the episode, but I found that Mr. Poopybutthole's voice was better long-term than I expected and Rick's was worse. Maybe he'll grow into it, but I could see it killing the show.

I think people are just tired of Rick and Morty. Its brand of edginess and cynicism isn't special anymore, it's old. Media in general has become as edgy as Rick and Morty was, look at the Boys for example. Rick and Morty has not evolved with its audience. It's stagnated.

Admit it. This episode is no worse than any other and if it had been Justin voicing them, you'd have said the episode was "okay."

It was an extremely meh episode.
A bunch of shitty underachivers wormed their way up and slowly removed the show's creator from the series entirely. It is a tale as old as time. Or however long it's been since Netflix began making original series.
Compounding factors. With a lot of these shows the well starts to run dry. People have a good idea and they fire off strong stuff when it's fresh and they're into it. Then it becomes a slog to come up with new stuff that hits as hard as the older stuff. Then the fanbase became synonymous with annoying internet nerds and that became one of the major things people talked about in relation to the show. It had nothing to do with the actual show, of course, but reputation is a real thing normies care about a lot. The show's reputation tanked. And then there's the whole Roiland thing, of course. No matter how much you twist it, that guy was a huge part of the show and kneejerk kicking one of the main people that's keeping your shit going is just stupid. Plus, you lose extra people who will now just not watch it anymore because they disagree with the decision.

He'd only been doing voices for the last 5+ years. Recasting really doesn't affect much, so for anyone to pretend the show is all that different now is stupid. Recasts happen in cartoons all the time.

Roiland was unprofessional and became a shitty boss to work, so LOTS of people on had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The guy hasn't attended a comic con panel for the show in YEARS. Adult Swim kicking him out was not as sudden as you might think.

But without rehashing the last thread and speaking of this episode specifically, I didn't have any problem with the voices. More accurately, I don't blame the dull performances on the voice actors. It's the writing. It's dense and inarticulate. The actors didn't understand their lines, and the writers probably didn't either. It's so overwritten that actors don't have a chance to act, they just end up reciting it. This problem is in nearly every prime time adult cartoon that is staffed with failed comedians who refuse to edit themselves or each other. It has been a festering problem with Rick and Morty, it simply reached a new and undeniable nadir with this premiere.
I thought the episode was fine, liked the robot ghost bit, though the vibe felt a bit more Solar Opposites with the Hugh Jackman/Predator stuff if that makes sense.
Roiland was unironically the last thing keeping this show at "watchable". Harmon is a fricking moron and he should kill himself, his creativity is stuck at the level of a fricking 12 yo.
