I want to make this clear: whether you’re trolling, gatekeeping, plain old racist, or all of the above, you have no place in this fandom. If you read The Lord of the Rings, or any of his works - like really read, beyond the fact that he once points out an elf has pale skin or whatever - these are stories about people of different races overcoming their differences and working together for a common cause.

You are showing absolutely zero appreciation of the fact that there is actually something substantial being done with the Legendarium and that now more than ever will people watch LOTR content that isn't just the original trilogy. You need to stop watching sensationalist YouTube channels that make it their full-time job to bash Rings of Power. They don't care about Tolkien, they only care about you angrily clicking on their video so they can make ad money.

Finally, you have perverted Tolkien's work by gatekeeping it. The Legendarium is about good triumphing over hate, about all free people working together as a force of good to defeat the ultimate bad. And most importantly, how overcoming this evil is by being able to change and adapt. You people have only demonstrated you ability to hate while also your inability to change.

But frick Orcs tho, kill all Orcs and their babies. Seriously, frick off with this shit. Tolkien was a racist, and whatever proto-virtue signal quotes you dredge up doesn't change.

I forgot to add. If you don't like the show then LITERALLY.JUST.IGNORE.IT. You freaking buttholes keep derailing every single thread about RoP™ because you have nothing better to do.

Get a flipping job. Amazon is doing us LotR nerds a huge favor here, we're getting all we ever wanted. They even invited some random superfans to get a sneak peek, that's a sign of respect for the fanbase.

We're looking at the biggest thing since Game of Thrones here. And we won't let a few rotten apples ruin that for us. Not a chance. The show looks awesomesauce.

I haven't watched a single Youtube video about ROP. But given Amazon's track record with fantasy series (i.e. Wheel of Shit) and just general disregard for source material, yeah, I think we can safely assume this isn't gonna be on par with Tolkien's work

You realize the third generation are the ones that got the deal for 500,000,000$ for the rights to some random appendices, right?
That's more money than the entire Tolkien estate had made up until that point, by a large margin.
Christopher, the "maintains wealth" generation, didn't want to do the show or sell the rights at all.

After the stunning success of shows like the live action Cowboy Bebop and the Wheel of Time, what was the biggest reason they are trying to capture those shows audiences once again by repeating the exact same pre release and marketing strategies?

Who is even the target audience? For their sake I hope they remembered to add homosexual interracial relationships to Tolkien's world to really appease the shows 12 superfans on twitter that might be too busy at the local glory hole to remember to watch the series when it releases unless it has graphic anal fisting in the first episode

      >Who is even the target audience?
People who watch big budget fantasy. Heard it's pretty popular

        Anonymous

Oh so this is supposed to appeal to the fans of the original trilogy aka predominantly white men who have proven that they enjoy things that stick to source material and don't add diversity and homosex?
Seems like a winning strategy to add "the first ever female dwarf (also black going against lore)" and make her the face of the marketing.
        >Big budget fantasy is popular
Literally only when they stick to source material and focus on strong male leads, proven literally every single time they make a show or movie.

          Anonymous

          >proven that they enjoy things that stick to source material
Clearly not the case considering how much the movies threw out and changed

            Anonymous

Lmao you're not even attempting to be serious eh?
They changed a few things and cut out some characters (like Tom Bombadil or whatever the frick his name was) but only to make the movies work. Every change was to make a better experience for the viewer, not to push politics and diversity like this dumpster fire.
It's a HUGE difference, of course you already know that because you are arguing just for the sake of it and don't actually have a point

He didn't improved the books. He made a film using the books and only made changes in order to make it more palatable to a movie going audience. The Hobbit was changed a ton because of executives wanting to make an epic trilogy out of a children's book.

I can't speak for 2 and 3, but the first movie Fellowship's changes were nearly all for the better if you want to create a good movie, and it was all to create a more sensible narrative or strengthen the pacing - never out of some ideological agenda or political modernization attempt. The only thing the movie mishandled was Boromir in theatrical, but extended fixes it.

2 and 3 were a bit ass so I can't speak for those.

What really matters is that the movies were full of white men. White male nerds like movies with lots of chad white men running around. If you replace that with negresses they will become disinterested and not watch it. Your only hope then is that these white male nerds will be replaced with an audience of negress nerds. Of course, no such audience exists in a great quantity, so you've really just shot yourself in the foot.

I don't think anons can understand the autism of true bookgays until they write a book themselves. I think even of a perfect adaptation of Tolkien's work came out during Christopher's lifetime he'd still end up hating it because his imagination is already filled by his interpretation of the books, and a movie/TV adaptation only intrudes on that.

That being said Christopher didn't write that shit, his father did, so it's pathetic that he's so anal about it.

Speaking as someone that's written a few in the 300-400 page area (that are fully unedited and never to be published, just dumb shit as a hobby that I do) and who is trying to do a big sprawling interconnected epic, you're dead on.
it's absurd the amount of notes and shit I have written down that will never make it into the books. easily 2000+ pages worth of notes and ideas and disjointed scenes and tons and tons and tons of autistic world building / lore that will never be directly important nor stated in the books.

it's truly unlike anything i've ever done in my life, to lose yourself in a story you're crafting. and i'm not even a good writer.

        >because his imagination is already filled by his interpretation of the books, and a movie/TV adaptation only intrudes on that.
This pretty much. It's also why people tend to love the beginning of a story much more than the end, even if the end delivers - the beginning still holds that heady potential and your imagination can work wonders with what the future might hold, but endings are too definitive and diminish that potential because they snuff out your imagination by locking the story into a set path. Bookgays also operate in a similar way, when a story is not yet adapted they can fantasize of a million ways it could be tailored to their headcanons, but once it's actually done it can't measure up to the version within your head, often even contradicting it.

This. They don't care about money. The point is culturally influential propaganda. When they put a giant negress on billboard in a historic city built by white men, the goal is not to sell underwear or shoes. The goal is to humiliate and demoralize the residents beneath who will look up and see the ogre negress staring down at them every day. This short essay comes to mind:

They don't, at all. They know the huge amount of backlash and negative perception that even the casual movie fans have about the show, and this is definitely bleeding over into the normie circles.

Since about the "Superfans" video, they've been very focused on making sure to mention how what they're doing is in the spirit of Tolkien and it's congruent with the lore.

The negative talk about it is doing damage. I don't think they quite predicted how much backlash people would have over what they've done/changed.

Denethor was a failure yeah. He just seems stupid in the films.
I'm not actually that mad about Faramir since it seemed a bit weird for me in the books that he's never even tempted. Him being tempted but then overcoming it in the films was okay to me, it's the schmaltzy drama sprinkled into that idea that irks me.

                Anonymous

Faramir in the books was meant to be a mirror opposite of Boromir, a second and inferior son who took it upon him to become greater than his older brother in ways that Boromir never could be. Dichotomy, yadda yadda, basically. But it made for great storytelling in the books, and I've hated how Jackson butchered his character just to insert some nonsensical shenanigans about a meeting between Frodo and a Nazgûl in Osgiliath in order to insert a "character arc redemption moment" for Faramir, when it was sufficient enough to show his burden of being seen as "lesser" by his father, and the lengths he was willing to go to prove him wrong in the face of absolute destruction.

                Anonymous

I know what you mean and I understand the point the writer was making, Faramir was more akin to the far-seeing wiser and restrained Numenorean types, scholar like. But I still think even in the book it's a bit hard to swallow considering the enormous pressure Faramir is under and his relationship with his father. I'd understand him being slightly tempted but recovering so the contrast with his brother is made, but Faramir just laughing at the Ring is something only Tom Bombadill should really be able to do imho

                Anonymous

I reject your argument on the basis that Faramir is basically Aragorn, but with a different upbringing and circumstances. Also makes it ironic, that there's two somewhat similar characters that are "successors to the throne of Gondor", but in different ways.

Hell no man. Aragorn is basically Elendil reborn, Faramir has a wisdom and grace most men don't but he's not ubermensch.

Frick you, my man Faramir has a strength of character that I think Tolkien saw in certain people in the trenches in WW1. He most probably conceived of Aragorn/Faramir based on people who are unmovable in their good convictions.

There was never any subtext of "bloodlines make some people having more fortitude", or whatever. Tolkien's point, if any, was rather that nobility puts more weight on the shoulders of people with respectable ancestors, for example, a royal descendant. Aragorn and Faramir had different situations, where Aragorn was basically exiled (but could, if he wanted, have claimed the throne of Gondor, bar any political implications and issues, but he likely would have gained support from Gandalf and other factions), and Faramir was denied it based on his older brother being "first in succession" as steward.

Patrick is right because he understands that making certain changes to smooth over the transition from book to screen can be prudent, but needlessly changing the ethnicities of characters clearly based on germanic myths is not a necessary part of that.

          >Why?
Because culture exists and it's localized. An eskimo doesn't have the same cultural heritage as an Icelander. To pretend otherwise is hilarious considering we have hundreds of thousands of books detailing the uniqueness of many cultures and how they can't just be translated across the globe to work for everyone. It seems Americans are incapable of understanding this though.

Certain cultures are tied to ethnicity. Picture the soul musical genre in your head, picture gangster rap, picture a basketballer in Nike shoes dunking into a net during an important match. Now be honest with yourself and confess that you imagined black people doing it. Just like when you imagine fantasy cloakshit, higher classes sneering at inferiors, and the Bible, you imagine whites.

European culture has never been fully white, that's the difference between Black Panther/Wakanda as black culture and Lotr as European culture (that had black people since eons ago) and why you comparing both is a false equivalence. Now, I hope this at least increases a single digit your IQ

                >that's the difference between Black Panther/Wakanda as black culture and Lotr as European culture (that had black people since eons ago)

No, chud, when I imagine the Bible I imagine ancient Hebrews.
When I imagine higher classes at inferiors, I can imagine literally anyone because white people did not invent class society, chud.
When I imagine fantasy cloakshit, I do not even necessarily imagine humans. You just lack all knowledge as well as imagination.

            Just like Wakanda.
It is braindead simple easy for people to understand why white people don't belong in Wakanda, which is basically fantasy Africa with some twists. But in fantasy Europe with some twists, suddenly it's inconceivable to people that blacks don't belong in it.

So you're actually arguing my case for me then? Wakanda is supposed to have whites then, since Africa in the real world does have a sizeable white population. Why do you hate Wakanda?

                Anonymous

No, incel. If you had watched Black Panther you'd know that Wakanda is supposed to be an ethnostate that has never been discovered by the white invaders.

                Anonymous

But why is it an ethnostate? Whites have existed in Africa for a long time, before the Internet allowed you to read this shit on wikipedia. Why is fictional Wakanda allowed to be an ethnostate because it just is, but white people fiction cannot?

I don't even know what you are talking about now, chud. Are you gonna tell me that ancient Hebrews were white now?

Are you gonna tell me you think Hebrews looked black, or are you going to admit that they look closer to caucasian? Why does even Hebrew art portray ancient Hebrews as white looking? Or are you just trolling for (You)s without any argument?
