Crumb the documentary is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen. I've never liked his art either, its just all pretty ugly to look at. Like Bakshi without the humour.
I don't know what it is exactly. It's like Crumb seems to have a self awareness in his art, but at the same time he's completely not self aware. His brother was the same but an order of magnitude worse.
wish I could find it but he wrote a scathing take down on how idiotic, fake, and dangerous Donald Trump is, and how he is most likely a rapist. In the comic the girls Crumb sent to kidnap him fall for his sleazy, creepy charm and turn on Crumb. Then Crumb's editor character tells Crumb to fix the story, make the bad guy suffer even if it isn't realistic and that Donald's sleazy 'charm' speaks more to people than reason or a sense of justice.
It was amazing to read.

That's his charm. He's just sane enough to know he's deranged, but still unhinged enough to share his thoughts with the world.
