You have to be joking, S2 had awful plotlines. Even the first one had the mandatory israelite nonsense.

    >actors
replacing Octavian with a shit actor and finding just the worst possible types for Agrippa and Co. ruined the show.

I thought it was cool that they found a slightly older actor who looked and sounded like the young actor. Why did they do it though? The younger actor would have been fine.

Apparently the second season was a rush ending, which is a shame because Brutus really deserved more. I agree that the actor for adult Octavian sucked and I don't know why they did that.

Octavian/Augustus/Caesar does not come off as autistic to me. The show failed by making him like a 4D chess genius robot when his gambles didn't always pay off, while young his passions ran wild and contrasted with his weak constitution
      [...]
Rome was overcrowded and poorly planned at this time. They didn't have a stone theatre until the show actually takes place. The senate building had burnt down and Pompey's theatre was being used. Gladiator fights would be held in the forum with wooden seating erected. Romans were still rustic in ways compared to their Greek forebears

Being autistic doesn't make one a genius, Octavian was smart but he was going up against other people who also intelligent and at notable advantages (the show might not have made this totally clear, I don't remember). And autists get all emotional and do stupid shit all the time, if anything Octavian was pretty controlled in this regard.

Brutus plotline was excellent. It's incredible that it wasn't a priority compared to shitty Son of Hades crap. The show heavily barters on having a viewer care about Vorenus' family but it does not set them up at all. Just before they got sold into slavery their father got pissed off about the women and children that he got shipped over in cages and who died of flux. Again, Spartacus does not have this problem because of how extreme it is, but Rome has no idea whether a person is a demon (makes some obvious bad guys) or whether it's a man of strict morals who when the plot needs it engages in heinous shit. I have no idea where Anglos got this notion that regular Romans just tortured people and watched them die horrible deaths outside of Colosseum. If you take a moment to think about it, Mayan raid squad from Apocalypto was less sociopathic than Vorenus and Pullo.

To be fair to the show, I think they were trying to depict Romans as Romans in their own cultural context. Vorenus saw his slaves as financial investments, so of course he's immediately upset when his large financial investment ends up completely failing (and, to his credit, he wasn't the one who kept them in bad conditions and treated his one remaining slave pretty well iirc). He was a man of strict morals, but those morals don't align with our modern ones and I enjoy the show for that. Also, Vorenus and Pullo would have been "harsher" than the average citizen because they were away at war for so long.

The inclusion of modern morality is the fact that he let the cuck baby live. I guess he didn't want to upset his daughters since he already had enough shit to deal with with them but that struck me as a bit unrealistic.

was it true that the Romans prefer other guy's wives over maidens because of their "proven fertility"? because that is really weird

The whole time. Everything is low IQ. Everything is dirty. Everything is uncivilised. Rome was a high civilisation, the choice to portray them as a barbarians with capes was an obvious slight against Rome.

Thats dumb. I'm not criticising Romans, I'm defending them. They aren't like they were depicted in the show, they used extreme violence, like everyone back then, but it was controlled and directed. They weren't stupid brutes, they were incredibly disciplined and orderly.

It doesn't really get dirty until Vorenus and Pullo start their little criminal syndicate. Much of the first season is political maneuvering amongst the nobility.

I rewatched it recently, the show takes a nosedive after Caesar is out. Only worth watching S2 for Anhtony and Cleopatra. Gangs of Rome plotline was especially uninvolving. In fact, every piece of writing related to plebeian affairs was hot shit. The show never made up its mind - if you can't film battles, just ignore them. If you're looking for violence, check if it's cartoonish or serious. Spartacus never had this problem, it unwavered from its decision to go to every length of excess offered.

I hate the way they did the Aventine gang subplot. They should have had Vorinus break the Concordia statue to get the superstitious gang members initially on his side. But he had Antony and the Roman army in the city on his side. He should have just went down a dark path that mimicked Erastes. Then one day threatens to rape another man’s wife and Pullo pulls him back into reality. He apologizes to Concordia, he finds his kids, and so on. None of that stupid Hades bullshit. Also make the israelite subplot about a Roman pagan cult and I’d be fine with it, but we all know why that’s in there.

    >Pre-Cleopatra Season one 9/10
    >Post-Cleopatra Season one 8/10
    >Season two 6/10

Kind of like the Terror in that sense, where ManBearPig fills the role of Cleopatra.
