Disney is filled with people who blindly believe in brand. If it was a success before, it is a success now. They don't understand quality, only the brand matters.

The first Haunted Mansion movie bombed too though. Why they did the exact same thing again and expected different results is baffling.
Beyond that, every attempt to turn their theme park rides into movie franchises has failed except for Pirates. It's clearly never going to happen again but they just keep trying.

On the contrary I think that the new religion of Neoliberalism has more devoted and fanatical followers than any new religion for centuries.
I think it specifically targets zealots, bullies and mentally ill people by giving them power over society and their enemies to persecute them at their leisure for not bowing down to the new commandments and they have all the power of public and private institutions egging them on.

They have total faith in every new dictat that's handed down to them and they would openly murder their opposition if they were given the opportunity.

Yea...not so much. ~~*Hollywood*~~ accounting is shady as frick, so the numbers on that chart aren't 100% accurate, but they're pretty close. The chart also deals solely with box office earnings, and not any of the merchandising, dvd sales, or licensing out to other sources. Regardless, box office earnings is the most important, as investors want their money back sooner, rather than later.

I don't think you're saying this, exactly, but no one is buy lil hoodmaid blurays and merch

          Anonymous

DVD sales are basically non-existent, especially for newer movies. And has this movie even been licensed out anywhere or is it only on Disney plus? Also, merchandise, especially for an established IP like the little mermaid is irrelevant. Disney was already selling little mermaid merchandise before this movie, and I doubt this movie gave it large enough of a bump to make a profit overall.

Where the frick have you been all these years?? Streaming killed Physical media and movies barely make anything off them. If anything, classic movies that get remastered are now making mint with new physical media releases. And no one was gonna buy Nogmaid on home video anyway, regardless of era. And finally, Disney killed their own post-release money making deals when they launched Disney+. Earlier, Netflix was paying them a ton of cash for every brand new big budget release that came out of Disney Studio.

Depends on the movie and the studio. For bigger movies, the marketing budget is usually half of the production budget, whereas smaller-budget movies have marketing budgets equal to the product budget. For something like Blair Witch Project, the marketing budget was like 1000x its production budget.

For Wish, we know they went all out and the marketing budget may very well equal its production budget.

$100m is the bare minimum cost of marketing and distribution for a major motion picture these days.

      Anonymous

Eh, it’s not so cut and dry like that. Not all marketing budgets are half the production budget. Especially for movies with large budgets. Most movies are within a 50-100m range, so I’d shave off at least 200m from that graph. Also the take home pay isn’t .5 of the worldwide box office, it’s 60% if the domestic box office and 40% of the internet box office, and those are rarely 50/50 splits, but I can’t be bothered to break down every movie on that list. Also, the reported budgets aren’t all paid for by Disney. They get tax credits, in the 10s of millions sometimes, depending on where they film. For example, Disney got a 55 million dollar subsidy from the UK government for the marvels. So saying they lost 1240, over a billion is pretty inaccurate, however they definitely lost hundreds of millions of dollars, definitely over half a billion.

        Anonymous

        >Eh, it’s not so cut and dry
Agree. Those are estimates based on averages. Some films marketing costs are as much as production costs or higher. Production costs are notoriously vague, as are total sales, bonuses, etc.... However, I stand by that chart and the process, as the results reflect many of the same things reported in the industry.

I only watched the trailer. How did the premise work? She wanted to grant everyone's wish all the time? How does that work? Don't some wish contradict each other, like if two people both wish to be President? Or what about wishes that harm others, such as I wish my dad would die? Or even wishes that directly harm others, such as "I wish I had a billion dollars" (which would cause inflation and hurt everyone not wishing for more money) or "I wish my daughter gets a kidney transplant soon", which could cause someone who was higher on the list to get skipped over?

It is not really addressed. The conflict wasn't about her wanting to grant all of the wishes but it was caused by the villain, king of the realm, who would make his subject forget about they dreams as they surrendered them to him, and he would grant one any now and then as long as it ensured his rule. When he is defeated all the inhabitants remember their dreams and aspiration and are told to work towards them. Protagonist is granted a magic wand that makes her the fairy godmother. How she will go about making wishes real is not addressed

      >she wants him to have the wish back

      >king gets the wish
      >king decides which wish gets granted
      >turns out all the wishes he wants granted are those that benefit him
      >wishes that are not granted will never come true

Imagine an animated movie that is supposed to be your big, bombastic, legendary, go-down-in-history-tier celebration movie. It's your business's business to make such animated movies that damn near every single person can enjoy. Imagine doing everything you can to ensure it is instead a boring, slapped-together, low-effort, pile of shit that is forgettable and also loses you money.

Disney's worst nightmares have been realized. His dream ruined by the tribe, his company turned into a cringe, laughingstock of a money-pit, and his legacy in ruins.

At this point it would be more profitable to scuttle the company, sell off its assets, and have whoever picks up what's left change the name of the company. There really is no Disney anymore.

It's honestly hard to wrap my head around the current state that Disney is in. Back in the 80's and 90's they defined kids entertainment, every kid grew up watching Disney movies on VHS and a trip to Disney World was like the greatest thing possible. Seeing how increasingly irrelevant they're becoming and how they're destroying their own legacy IPs is astounding. There will be marketing textbooks about this era of companies imploding and Disney will be one of the prime examples.

How long was this movie in production? Because it seems like they did a rush job because they realised the anniversary was coming in a few months.

Moana and Coco aren't the same because blacks are objectively the least liked race globally. Princess and the Frog was a financial disappointment for Disney. When you factor in advertising budget, not just the production budget, it outright lost money according to The New York Times.

Frog Princess had more problems than the lead being black, it came along when CG animation was the hot new thing and seemed "old fashioned" to audiences, plus they got Randy Newman for the soundtrack and it just didn't have any of those memorable sing-along songs like the Renaissance era movies. I don't remember any of the music except the chorus of the villain song.
Also for me at least Tiana spending most of the movie as a frog was a disappointing bait-and-switch, I never was a fan of talking animal movies. One of the main supporting characters is a fricking fly. I get that they did it to try to appeal more to boys, but their other princess movies did just fine without those tactics. The prince was also a complete idiot.

How does a poorly made cartoon with no real star power end up losing $230m???
Are they laundering money for the Mexican cartels?

      Anonymous

There probably is money laundering. But the biggest cost comes from how Disney makes movies. Almost everything is done stateside in expensive locations with people making good money. They constantly try to reinvent technology. Their movies often spend years in development hell. This movie, in particular, was originally envisioned to have the star be a person. Tangled had a huge budget (for the time) because they straight up scrapped the movie at one point and started over.

Merch of this movie is rough as well. Maybe the star will sell and maybe the goat will sell, but I can't see any of the cast being high demand with how ugly they are.

Little girls want to wear elaborate pretty princess dresses. Look at that frumpy gown that they are selling. What little girl wants to wear that?

It’s not so much the dress, it’s the dark skin, dark eyes, dark cornrow hair. If they had simply given her blue eyes I bet it would’ve given it a slight boost.

Every race around the world prefers fair skinned dolls. And in the US kids know that black = not fun and instead preachy, lesson time about racism

I'm reminded of a theory for the reason blonde hair evolved is that animals like bright shiny colors. And light hair colors function as a purely sexual selection trait. E.g. peawiener feathers, but hair. Stick 10 women in a line and one has blonde hair, your eyes will lock on to the bright one.

is more easy. Kids have trouble to read complex info. a white face looks more plain with light and is easy to read expressions. Black face have more info and its difficult to read expressions. Also, since 70 and 80s black color is used for plastic shit like tv controls, so kids dont see it related to persons, which is funny.

Extremely strange take. Aurora was my favorite princess as a kid because she’s the most pretty. Cinderella is also pretty, Snow White is bland. Belle is ok and Ariel is really pretty (not as pretty as Aurora) Never had much interest in Pocahontas or Jasmine as characters (Mulan is based) even though I liked those movies. Moana is all right, Coco is all right. But they do not have the pretty princess/strong prince stereotype that children love. Anyway the biggest frick up of this movie wasn’t making the protag an anachronistic black, it was getting rid of the romantic subplot.

I bet when they pitched wish, some deluded producer must have thought that, not only it would be their biggest hit ever, but that it would also win the oscar. A perfect 100th anniversary for them, and not only was a bomb, it didn't even get nominated after all

The pitches were pretty different, i think the main family was suppose to be like the soprano's. They pretty much got rid of that and then made the MC black for oscar bait/ESG bux.

Critics generally said it was too safe and predictable, should have gone a bit edgy with Disney's Sopranos.

You ever notice how Youtube is absolutely drenched with homosexuals soifacing and reacting to these things when they are announced like they are gazing upon the divine face of God himself, but then the numbers drop and you find out fricking nobody went to see it? At all? And then you notice how the exact same social media personalities previously fellating this shit either go dead silent about it or start making "rant" videos calling it garbage, completely contradicting themselves?

Why is it not illegal to pretend to be enthusiastic about something while being paid to advertise it?

Related, but SBI is a small player. The real problems were Vanguard and Blackrock, who pretty much control all funding and investments, and they implemented DEI and ESG measures that companies must adhere to if they want funding.

SBI is just a grifter that companies can hire to raise their ESG scores so Vanguard and Blackrock will continue to invest with them.
