Of 15 films costing $100 mil or more to make, the average reported world wide earnings were 47% of total box office. (source: deadline)

With a $304 mil cost, Furiosa will need to bring in $646 mil to reach the break even mark from world-wide box office earnings. Not going to happen.

$175 million is the amount for the entire program over the course of the year, not just one movie. It's also only a 40% tax credit, so whatever they paid in taxes for crew, supplies and sets at the end of the year they can write that amount off form taxes paid maybe get a small refund. The amount given by the Australian government to this production is hardly what you are quoting. Learn how film tax credits work.

No it's not. Cult classic means that the movie was not well received and/or did not do well financially at release but became popular later, usually through delayed word of mouth thanks to poor marketing or release timing at the initial opening.

It may have not made a lot of profit, but it was considered a very good movie that they hoped that there was some hype that people would turnout for another Mad Max movie.

So there was real hope it could have done better, but a prequel to a character that was boring as shit isn't going to help things. Furiosa was like the one character that no one was clamoring to know more about.

Fury Road was the 4k blu ray when uhd was new. I had a 4k player and you'd see twenty copies of this next to a few other movies scattered about when you'd go to Walmart or Best buy. That's how I ended up watching it, and how many people like myself surely did. Furiosa (I cringed while typing that) will not have that luxury.

According to that article it was 1995 which was Casper with $22 million, however $22 million in 1995 is the equivalent of $45 million today with inflation. Return of the Jedi and Last Crusade's inflation adjusted figures would smash it too.
Embarrassing level failure for Warner. Don't need to worry about going to the cinema for this, it'll probably be on streaming by next week.

It's record breaking how low it's tracking.

Adjusted for inflation the last movie to come in lower over Memorial Day Weekend was Bustin Loose featuring Richard Pryor in 1981. With inflation, that movie came in around $22 million. Keep in mind there were half as many theaters and the population was much smaller back then.

This result is pretty bad considering the bloated budget. If Garfield wins the weekend, it's pretty low, but at a sub $60 million budget it is a success and it will make a decent profit.

I think this movie has some staying power. People love the theater experience and are waiting for these kind of movies worth paying for. It does not matter if you got a 4k or 8k screen at home. nothing can replace the theater experience.

There comes a point though when the value proposition of going to the theaters doesn't make sense anymore and your at home experience becomes "good enough" though.
Movie studios have no one to blame, but themselves for destroying the theater business model.
                >people used to really love watching the trailers before the movies, theaters undermined this by releasing trailers online first
                >movies used to take almost an entire year before they were released on VHS. This gave the movies longer legs and allowed studios to prop up weak weekends with a popular movie
                >studios used to be able to take more chances on riskier projects because they'd essentially have a second box office with the DVD release. They threw that away to chase a completely nonviable business model known as "streaming"

all valid points but I insist that bigger screens have a deeper psychological impact on your mind.
You just get more "sucked into" the movie world.
This isnt important for all movies, of course.

I go to the movies when I m sure this effect will be important for the movie. DUNC for example was a once in lifetime opportunity to have that experience I will never forget.

On average, the additional costs associated with making and releasing a film come out to around an additional 148% of the production budget. So if a film has a $100 mil production budget, there is an additional cost of $148 mil to get that film to theaters. Additional expenses include prints and ads, residual deals, distribution costs, interest and overhead costs, and participation deals.

At a reported budget of $160 mil for Apes, and $190 mil for Dune 2, their total costs would be $396 mil for Apes, and $471 for Dune 2. The average studio take from worldwide box office is 47%, which means Apes needed $842 mil and Dune 2 needed over a billion to break even. That didn't happen.

                >Why does a 200 million dollar movie take twice as much money to get it to theaters than a 100 million dollar movie. How is getting a movie to theaters not a fixed cost?
There are a lot of factors involved.
                >marketing costs
                >interest fees on loans
                >overhead costs
                >distribution costs
                >residuals paid our
                >participation deals

The data I use comes from an analysis based on averages collected from 15 films with a $100 mil production budget or greater as provided by Deadline. I did averages on films less than $50 mil as well, and they're different than the larger films, but fairly close. Of course the data relies on the reporting of the studio's themselves, which is notoriously shitty.

              >On average, the additional costs associated with making and releasing a film come out to around an additional 148% of the production budget
you are crazy. it cant be more than the actually production of the movie. it is estimated it was around 100 to 150 millions for promotion.

                Anonymous

                >cant be more than the actually production of the movie.

These are averages based off the production budget, so if the production budget was reported as $100 mil and prints and ads were reported as costing $71 mil, then they spent an additional 71% of the cost of the production budget in additional expenses.

Here's the averages I found using 15 films with a reported production budget of $100 mil or more.
                >prints and adds: 71%
                >residuals and distribution costs: 18%
                >interest and overhead costs: 19%
                >participation deals: 40%

So when you add all that up, a film with a reported production budget of $100 mil would cost an additional $148 mil, on average, to get to the theaters. That doesn't include any grants or discounts made by governments or states, of course, and some will cost more or less, but those are the averages I found.

Yeah, Dunc 2 had a huge ad campaign, but the movie is also good. It has good cinematography with good cgi that blends well, and its an improvement over the 1st Dunc, which pretty much put all its eggs to its sequels with its cliffhanger. Nobody asked for Furiosa, Fall Guy is boring and Gosling is not "literally me" anymore, since he has gotten old and bogged, and IF is a dogshit Reynolds movie with lukewarm humor

There is still a market for family films at the theatre, proven by Wonka, which I assume is so that the cinema can act as a babysitter of sorts while the tired parents get a 2 hour nap. But I suppose that market isn't that large anymore when everyone has a tablet

This was already proven when ZSJL overshadowed literally every single other dc film.
And then again when Cavill was the only thing anyone had to say about Black Adam. And then again again when Aquaman 2 flopped hard.
It's the reason why Gunn removed his cameo (along with Baffleck) from Aquaman 2 and any other final dceu films; because people would've gotten excited at the prospect of their return

Fosters aired in the early 2000s. It’s zoomercore. Just not as popular as shit like Phineas and Ferb or Gravity Falls.

It can work when it's done by a writer who actually acknowledges that women are physically weaker than men by a dramatic margin and uses it as a david and goliath type of thing where you root for the girl because she's the underdog. But imagine modern hollywood doing anything with that concept.

This is why Sarah Conner and Clarice Starling are considered well written female characters and not blank slate girlbosses.

Here's the difference between Barbie and The Marvels/Madame Web and Furiosa though.. Barbie is a comedy/drama movie while the others are action movies. Barbie actually appeals to women while the other three do not. Women are expected to show up to "girl power" action movies, and Hollywood keeps getting surprised when they do not.. because it doesnt appeal to them, and it doesnt appeal to men either.

Movie execs are still under the delusion that women want to watch other women succeed. In reality women hate each other more than incels hate them. I work with women. They never talk about smashing the patriarchy, or power scaling their favorite Hollywood girlbosses. “Furiosa would totally clear Madame Webb in a fight!” They talk about their boyfriends/husbands, kids/grandkids, and other women that are annoying them. Barbie was a success because it appealed to nostalgia. It was something mothers could take their daughters to.

barbie succeeded because it was a film FOR women. Furiosa is an action film, women dont watch those, men do. And men dont really want to watch a female MC in an action film, its unrealistic and the action is crap.

People are still going to theaters, but only for special occasions. It has to be a movie that they know for sure that they'll like, or they'll stay home. Movies that looks like they might not be very good will flop because people dont want to potentially pay $30+ on tickets, reserved seating, popcorn/soda, etc on a movie they might not enjoy.

Theres too much cheap entertainment out there to risk going to shitty movies.

I've unironically been to a theater more times this year than all in my life. Three times for Godzilla (-1, -1-c, and GxK), Dunc 2, the 45th anniversary of Alien and Planet of the Apes. All because I know that I'd enjoy those movies on some level.

Even if you have the money, so many small theaters closed down that the drive to a cinema can be 2-hour round trip in the suburbs.

I'm lucky I live 20 minutes away from two of them. One is a 90 year old theater that has slightly better prices but worse quality and the other is your standard one that is more expensive but has better quality and more screens for more movies. I often go to the older one not only for the cheaper price but because I know that I'll probably be the only person in there. Watching the flicks there just let me put my feet up and enjoy the whole thing. Great experiences.

If they solve it, 2 things happen.
            1. They see that people don't actually pay much attention to advertisements and thus they (the managers) have to find new ways to advertise
            2. They (the managers) can no longer hit performance metrics by improving advertisement reach by 5% of whatever they had beforehand
Like with almost everything else in corporate america (and canada and the uk etc), the workers aren't incentivised to do anything good for the company. They're incentivised to do meaningless shit that looks good on paper.

Vidya feels like everything has skipped 2024. The Switch 2 isn't bothering to release until next year, GTA VI will be next year at earliest, Hollow Knight and Hades sequels next year
There is nothing about 2024 in gaming that interests me.

Women don’t engage with media the way men do. They would rather socialize and spend time with other people than live vicariously through fictional heroes. Like, you’ll never see women gush over Star Wars like men do.
And are there even feminists even more? What do they do? They got everything they asked for! Most leadership jobs are held by women. Most college graduates and applicants are women. Most protagonists in mass media are women. Most young men have become incel NEETs. What more could the feminists possibly want?

Who exactly does? I haven't seen anyone say anything positive about it anywhere.
A boomer movie buff friend of mine from work who I asked about it didn't even know the movie was coming a week ago and just made this hopeless looking face when I told him it was a prequel about Furiosa like he immediately knew exactly what it was going to be.

Not him, but every e-celeb is shilling for it, without saying anything negative about it. Only Doug was a bit skeptical about this movie and where does it go from here. Quite curious, if I may say so. Oh well, this is shaping up to be another The last Jedi fiasco. Not going to see it this Mad Max bait anyways.

The whole modern action movie girlboss shit never made sense to me. You have a world where the most over the top roided out dirt monkeys rule by force, and supposedly this skinny twig girl can not only keep up with them and the physical demands of this world, but also put them in their place? She's strong just because?

Contrast this with Ripley in Alien. No human is going to outcompete the aliens' physical advantages. And even with all the cunning Ripley shows us in the movie it's very clear there are times she only survived because of luck or the help of others. She makes the most out of an absolute shit situation but nobody is expecting us to believe she's a super hero tank

Frick, you can even contrast it with Scrooge McDuck. We're told he's smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies, and he always shows us *how*. He can't just steamroll through obstacles, it's always the combination of cunning, resolve, teamwork, and friends that saves the day

But girlbosses are just strong just because. Don't question it, ok?

      Anonymous

It can work when it's done by a writer who actually acknowledges that women are physically weaker than men by a dramatic margin and uses it as a david and goliath type of thing where you root for the girl because she's the underdog. But imagine modern hollywood doing anything with that concept.

I fricking love this movie, but if there was ONE thing I didn't care about and didn't ask for, it's to know more about Furiosa's past.
Her story is done, we know what will happen to her, I don't care about knowing more about what happened to her before that.

I feel exactly the same. I'm done with prequels, I don't need to know how any character became the character I came to know. Also, frick worldbuilding and expanding lore and shit like that, I'm done with all that. The world is just a backdrop for the characters.
