Sandlot Question

Did the boys on the team (specifically Benny) think Smalls was getting beat up by his stepdad? The audience sees how Smalls gets a black eye but he never actually explains it to any of the guys on the team. It would explain why Benny was the most patient and kind to him if he just assumed he was getting abused. Thoughts?

Random shiners used to happen a lot when kids were still allowed to frick off for hours at a time.

Benny had already invited him out to play with them at that point though. He started practicing with his step dad after humiliating himself.

It could have easily been a throw away line too with Benny going "hey what happened to your eye". Benny was just a nice guy and i'm sure a lot of those kids were smacking by their dad's back then. Not something to bring up in a kid's movie

Smalls was accepted by them once he learned how to throw a ball. It was like his third day and they all loved him after.

My childhood friend group was literally a 90s sitcom. Had a white kid, asian kid and a white girl and a black kid and I was the Hispanic kid. I miss them so much

A lot of them moved away over the years, and I lost touch with them except one or two. Just like the ending of The Sandlot 🙁

Benny was from a Mexican family so nightly beatings were a regular occurrence. No reason to ask.

No, he was just the weakest link and Benny was a good guy who looked after him since he was so good at baseball he didn't need to jockey for status
