Genuinely. I think Jigsaw is the only true modern horror icon

Nah, Ghostface has no memorable gimmick and no actual menace due to the movies being shlocky parodies. Saw nails this. Jigsaw is definitely up there with Krueger and co. The gimmick that he's doing this out of sense of moral justification adds to the kino factor.

John Kramer is menacing as fuck, the dude at the hospital trying to steal from the patient had no idea the kind of hell he avoided.

If John catches you doing some shit, you are pretty much fucked, not right then, but maybe weeks or months after, in a moment you'd expect the least. You'll wake up with your balls tied to an hydraulic press with a timer, forced to choose between your life or your balls.

Actually he technically did commit a few crimes, but he crossed so many state lines throughout his spree that by the time they were finished untangling the logistical and bureaucratic nightmare trail of evidence, he'd already be immune due to statute of limitation anyway

Of course, because the movie is retarded. Incredibly stupid traps (3 minutes to perform brain surgery when in SAW3 the girl had hours to prepare) and full of asspull twists.

      Anonymous

In Saw 3 he’s having her actually perform surgery to remove the tumor. In X that guy’s game is to remove any chunk of grey matter and drop it in the thing, not find a tumor.

        Anonymous

        >actually perform surgery to remove the tumor
No, she only opens his skull to release pressure. Still had lot of time to prepare herself and had to be very careful. Here we have a guy tied to chair who has to cut through skull and remove brain matter. She only had to cut John's skull open and even that was dangerous for John.

          Anonymous

The main purpose of her “game” was to help him, not drop a random chunk of brain out of her own skull. There’s no reason for that spic to have hours.

X was a decent sequel that turned around and took a dump on the floor with a retarded ending, even for a Saw movie. If they expanded more on the main game instead of taking the entire first half just to show what was wrapped up in a 1 minute trailer it could have been a top tier installment up there with 2. The traps were mostly unsurvivable considering they'd end up in a vet clinic in the favela after cutting body parts off, but I can't really pick it apart too much since it doesn't even take itself seriously.

      Anonymous

The first half of the movie was good, no need to cut it down. The ending was trash though. The movie would've been more interesting if Parker was just an innocent bystander that Amanda and John had to deal with. The people behind these movies seem very convinced that Jigsaw having a plan that relies on predicting impossible things makes these movies more interesting rather than retarded. Why cant we just have a Saw movie where shit happens instead of being part of some nonsensical plan.

        Anonymous

Jigsaw being some omniscient being doesn't bother me that much since it's a cornerstone of every other movie, but I agree it could be toned down and/or used in a more interesting manner. The blood trap and gas room were as underwhelming as it gets coming from a franchise that prides itself on "oh shit" twist endings. We 100% got robbed of some way over the top ending trap just so they could keep the doctor bitch questionably alive for sequels.

I thought Saw X was pretty good. However, I can't be the only one who thinks the hooker, the drug addict and the vet didn't really deserve to die. The hooker and the vet died because they were given unrealistic time limits. They did the hardest parts of their tests but just ran out of time. The drug addict gets killed by the main antagonist, which would be forgivable if Jigsaw was actually outsmarted, but he was in control the entire time. The hooker's death annoyed me especially. It didn't seem fair.

      Anonymous

about the hooker i've also found weird that she got put on a trap because of the scam but her wannabe rapist got straight up killed instead, even tho in saw 4 he put another rapist on a trap
at least we've finally got unquestionable murder charges against jigsaw

        >at least we've finally got unquestionable murder charges against jigsaw
It was Amanda who did it. No charges against Jigsaw. Yes I'm aware this isn't how the law works in reality.

They were all various flavors of favela monkey and were complicit in robbing cancer patients, for those two reasons alone they deserved it. My main gripe is the timing like you said, and also what happens if they are successful? Does Jigsaw just say "lol game paused guys, gotta bring this person missing a limb to the hospital before they bleed out in 5 minutes, i left punch and pie on the table if you need a snack", repeat over and over? I get that it's fucking Mexico but even those cockroaches have enough brain cells to figure out something is suspicious about a white old guy showing up to the hopistal every hour or so with different gravely injured people.

Yeah, I'm not saying they morally didn't deserve to die. I'm saying the tests were unfair and one of them just straight up got screwed over by Jigsaw's 4D chess moves.
Also, it's a shame they didn't do anything else with the guy who passed his test in the beginning. It was nice to see someone pass though.

The whole point was that it was unfair. John was given false hope for this magical newage cancer treatment which was never going to work because it was a scam. Its commentary of how it was unfair for him so the traps were also unfairly weighted for the persons resposible. He still did make them possible but unfair.

        Anonymous

I liked how we see him designing the rack trap from Saw 3 in this movie…. Only to then throw it away when he believes he can be cured.

So he was either gonna outright stop doing this if he was cured. Or he was at least gonna be less sadistic with them. He laughs and calls the rack his “personal Favorite” on the tape in saw 3. Thats also the movie where he’s on his death bed so I guess he’s beyond any semblance of caring.

Also worth noting he clearly values innocent lives and children to keep them safe. But was willing to kidnap and use Jeff’s daughter in saw 3. Even though he always planned she’d be safe regardless of what Jeff did

Timeline wise… anyone figure out when this stuff takes place?

        >when John had his surgery
        >(months?) later he captures them for the game

So Saw 1 must have happened by then because this seems like an early Amanda apprentice still. She’s still nervous and apprehensive.

I can’t remember, did Jigsqw actually recruit Hoffman BEFORE Amanda?

          Anonymous

          Hoff was before Amanda, yes.
I liked how blatantly selfish John is that he considers giving up his work because he's all better now.

            Anonymous

Yeah, Jigsaw is very self centred when you think about it. His entire operation is really more about passing on a legacy since he lost the chance to have a child.

            Also another question timeline wise…

HOW DID NORWEGIAN PSYCHO DOC KNOW JOHN WAS JIGSAW?

I thought this wasn’t public info before Saw 2 at least, and this was set before Saw 2

Are we supposed to intuit that she just reads a lot of crime news and figured out he was jigsaw from the games and not some angry vengeful patient? Because I don’t think he calls himself jigsaw even once during the games with them.

              Anonymous

I don't think anything in 2 says that his persona (or whatever you want to call it) goes public? There's newspaper stories of him in 1, and especially in early 2000's I could see "crazed killer locks fatty in razor wire basement" doing the rounds.

                Anonymous

Before Saw 2 he seemed pretty low key.

After Saw 2. His identity is outed by himself intentionally. And the authorities and media really ramped up attention. Especially since he kidnapped (and presumably killed) a cop as far as they know. Right after escaping a raid from an entire swat team

              Anonymous

She doesn't know John is Jigsaw until she's in the traps.

The waterboarding thing was fine if you think about what time period it was actually set in. It was like an Iraq war thing in the news. The only trap that was really that uninspired was the radiation thing in my opinion, but it still tied in with the theme of cancer treatments so it made sense in that way.

They started with that shit pretty early on where the people caught in traps weren't even able to escape without the help of somebody else. No fucking idea what John is rambling on about how he gives everyone a choice.

Logically I think in real life it would be damn near impossible to cut a man open and find a key in an entire intestinal lining then find the lock on the back of your head in less than a minute

The time limits always feel too short to realistically win. Like the eye guy in the start of saw 2

Could I cut out/open my eye to get the key if my life depended on it? Maybe.

Could I do it in ONE MINUTE? Fuck no.

I’m confused on the timeline. How did she know he was Jigsaw at the end? I thought this was before Saw 2 which is when Kramer became publicly known as jigsaw.

    Saw 2

    Saw X

In saw 2 the kid was safe the whole time though. Amanda’s job was to keep him safe from the other people. And he didn’t seem to suffer any of he effects of the gas so probably already had the antidote in him like Amanda had

Similar with the girl in Saw 3. She was just bait for Jeff to do a game if he didn’t go full retard and get killed. Hence why Hoffman immediately “rescues” her

The cops can't figure out how he's still alive since they all know he's jigsaw and they all know Tobin is dead... is it him? Is it a copycat? This is the b plot to the torture porn... turns out it is AI Tobin deepfaked from the grave

The mid credits sting was fun with the black guy who was faking his cancer and had a fake scar. But what the FUCK was that device on his chest meant to even do? Looked like mechanical crab legs were coming out. And his arms were completely restrained so not sure how he could play any game at all

Also bizarre to let him see hoffman’s face if he intended it to be a game… what if he wins? He’d be able to expose Hoffman. Absolutely no logic in letting him see his face.

So looked less like a game, more like he was just gonna straight up murder him. Which feels unfair from jigsaw. Maybe he felt especially pissed off because technically this was the specific guy who tricked him into doing the fake surgery with false hope

Also, when you think about it. The black guy must have been going to those cancer support meetings for MONTHS. Faking his cancer for sympathy. All just to find some desperate candidates for his bullshit scam. He must have even intentionally bumped into John to recommend the treatment knowing he was dying soon. Rather than the accidental meeting we are led to believe it is at the start

Part of the problem of the SAW franchise is (aside from the rationalization that "the movies got dumb cos Hoffman!" bullshit) the traps in Nu-Saw are way worse than dying to them. I don't really way to go on living once I've used one hand to cut my hand off, then used the drill attached to my tongue to drill through my free hand into a shotgun shell that'll blow it off and tear my tongue out. There's no life for me after that. I'm just fucked either way, like if I tear out my fucking brain what's the point of me anyway?

I don't think it's ever really explored with traps that the person thinks are lethal but aren't dangerous at all, either, which I think is an interesting choice. It rewards you for making a choice that would be incredibly difficult to save your life rather than punishing you for the rest of it. Something like "jump into this acid tank to save this schoolbus of kids" and instead of melting you into human soup, you're unscathed because the test was whether you'd be selfish or heroic. But I guess then you don't get cool trap kills so nobody cares.

      Saw II > I > III > X > IV > VI > 3D > V > J > S

V is so bland that I always forget all the details in it but the glass box. I can at least remember something from all other movies, still obviously better than Jigsaw and Spiral but the weakest of the initial run of Saw movies for sure. 3D is retarded but fun.

      II > I > VI > III > X > IV > V >>> 3D/Jigsaw/Spiral

X would've been ranked higher if the ending had been more satisfying.

The funny thing is people are hating on V when it has some of the better traps and planning. V isn't memorable because it has one of the most underwhelming meta plots in the series. But I like it more than some of the others, because there was actually a better than zero chance for the tested to survive their traps.

I have no idea why people place the insurance scam film so highly, even if the poor execution was an example of Jigsaw/Hoffman's villain decay.

I liked the opening, too. It was a great way of introducing how Jigsaw recruited Hoffman. Saw VII (3D), was cheesy but memorable. I remember seeing that and thinking the movie was upping the stakes with Jigsaw testing people live in public.

Not sure why people feel Cecelia got off easy.

She lost all the money she scammed. And once the police find her she’s going to prison for a long time. All the evidence of her crimes was in that room with her.

Remember, they were literally doing this shit in clandestine locations, constantly moving around and employing armed men with masks to ensure nobody was an undercover cop trying to find their location, because they were basically doing illegal human experimentation mixed with major fraud. My guess is Hoffman probably “finds” the scene and ensures she goes down for her crimes.

Also. I don’t know if I caught everything. But they mentioned her father being “the real deal” a few times as if he could cure John. Was this total bullshit or could he potentially have done so but John has given up trying to get cured at this point?

Cecelia says it but she’s a liar so whatever

But Amanda also says it and seems to think it could be true. Desperate hope from her because she loves john? Or possibly legit? She did do her research on everything else after all

      Anonymous

She doesn't know John is Jigsaw until she's in the traps.

Even in Saw 1 the "Jigsaw killer" is a high profile serial killer.

In Saw 1 he definitely wasn’t that much of a high profile killer that a non American would know of him.

Doctor Gordon only seemed to hear about him because he was a literal suspect and was brought in for questioning and to listen to Amanda.

Adam had zero clue there was some Jigsaw killer, and he lived in the same city as him

Seemed like the police kept the news as low key and limited on info as possible before Saw 2 happened. Probably didn’t release the known stuff like the puppet. Pig masks etc

The reason he was called the jigsaw killed is from cutting the pieces of jigsaw from the failed subjects. So I guess that got leaked.

    Thoughts on Carlos?

    >is willing to drown himself in blood to save a serial killer
    >John “You are a warrior, my boy... A warrior!”

Interesting note. John and Jill named their unborn son Gideon. Gideon comes from Hebrew and means “great warrior”. Just to add to the obvious fact John saw Carlos as like a surrogate son

I wonder what this kid did and felt after a serial killer gave him millions of dollars and praised him. Clearly he didn’t rat him out

Will Carlos be the new Jigsaw in the reboot? If they reboot it I’d honestly prefer they just make a new one in 10 years and let all the previous history stay canon. New Jigsaw just takes inspiration from the original. Maybe get Tobin to still voice the tapes and puppet and in universe they say it’s an AI imitation or something

Hard part would be having a character with reasons as compelling as John without it being a copy paste. And getting an actor who is good enough to capture the screen like he does. Not an easy task

They have tried many, many times to replace Tobin and it doesn't work well (even though I personally love all the movies.) Without him, the series is dead. Amanda is a close second, but they are two peas in a pod considering they're both canonically dead lel.

The series is in a really, really, really weird place. People didn't like Spiral and there is no one set up to replace Tobin even though no one really wants that anyways. They also can't keep doing this prequel shit, considering how horrible the strat worked for Disney and Star Wars.

Perchance they just do the next part and they retcon Hoffman to survive in the end and he's the next generation. Potentially gets his own Amanda too, that could be a good twist to end the movie on (even though it'd be way too similar to 1.)

idk, i love this series and have seen all films besides Jigsaw and Spiral 30+ times, it's dumb fun but i still love it.

Doctor Gordon is still alive and free.

Just cut the man his check and give him a shot at being the head of the jigsaw cult where he has a few henchmen as seen at the end of Saw 3d

Gordon would actually have his games be truly fair I think. No bullshit ones where somebody HAS to die. Also since he’s a literal doctor he could make some more gruesome medical ones like Saw X. And his speeches and themes would be about healing yourself and treating your soul etc

Would also be interesting to have a Jigsaw balancing his games and his family life. Have him be retired from being a doctor (losing your leg to the jigsaw killer is as good a reason as any) and he does charity work as cover for plotting his games

Be interesting if maybe his wife or daughter eventually suspects something.

Also maybe a kino scene where he visits Adams grave and apologises for not coming back fast enough

lol'd. Either way, the problem with Gordon is that he just doesn't have much charisma and he absolutely cannot carry a movie. Hoffman, despite weird writing, did his fucking best to do it and I think he pulled it off really well.

Your suggestions aren't bad per se, I think Saw X writers really tried to ground Tobin even more and make him more personable, but I just don't think Gordon can do it at all.

I'm talking about the character Gordon. Nothing the audience has seen from him has been overly compelling. His acting in 1 was downright laughable, and all of his small inclusions in later films just felt shruggable. I don't think he's suited for the style of films Saw is/was/has become.

Nonetheless, he won't be coming back, especially after how much emphasis was placed on medical stuff in Saw X and he never showed up. Which is fine, I could certainly do without him and his bland delivery.

iirc, there's literally a scene where Amanda tells Kramer the crooks should die for fooling him and he tells her everyone deserves a chance, same thing he says multiple times thorughout the whole franchise

None of these movies were good after this first one.

The second movie is the best. It’s peak jigsaw. Retains the spirit of the first on a higher budget and concept

Also jiggy is just more in character. You have to retcon and ignore stuff from the first movie because he was a generic killer in it. He was ordering Zapp to kill an innocent woman and child for fucks sake

    II > I > VI > III > X > IV > V >>> 3D/Jigsaw/Spiral

X would've been ranked higher if the ending had been more satisfying.

God tier soundtrack, traps were grisly without being OTT like later films, twist was very strong

          Honestly the best one

They're all pretty fun on a big screen. It's one of those horror franchises which I'd say works better at the cinema.
But to me it felt like a step down from the previous ones. Saw X on the other hand feels in line and it's one of the better sequels imo.

It wasn't real so it's ok, John just wanted to imagine the poor fucker suffering. A final design would've been harsher most likely.

        Anonymous

The symbolism of the trap was good.
Your hands take what your eyes see, so sacrifice one or the other. It's a good concept, but it would need a bit more polish. Makes sense, considering it's the first thing that came to his mind while watching the guy almost steal stuff. If anything, it shows how good his mind is to have come up with that on the spot.

movies really only really make their money in the first 2-3 weeks, especially with horror, I assume getting it out on digital by Halloween can give it a boost in sales
Looks like 78M is on the lower end for the series but it was also one of the most well received, think another one will be pretty likely

It was for John and Amanda. John had anticipated for every plot twisted as he usually does. The only thing he hadn’t planned for was for the kid showing up and getting grabbed instead

        Anonymous

Still feels like a bit of an asspull compared to his plans in other movies. Parker could have easily just shot him when he came in, or the bitch might have stabbed them once John gave them the upper hand. Way too much luck and assumption to be satisfying.

Either Cecilia and her boyfriend go in it. Or if cecelia’s boyfriend grabs the gun and betrays them. John and Amanda go in it and get freed when they grab the money

John just didn’t anticipate the kid being there, or cecelia being such an evil bitch she’d drag him into it

Plus he still just owns a ton of abandoned industrial and housing land and buildings that were intended for the urban renewal group until he lost faith in humanity and abandoned it

What really confused me is why jigsaw shows his face to these people? This movie is set before he was known to the public as the jigsaw killer so why would he let these victims see him? Now there’s some doctor bitch running around knowing his identity before saw 2 even happens

This was set just before Saw 2. In which he fully intended to get caught and be publicly revealed as Jigsaw. Likewise with Amanda since Eric Matthew’s son would obviously point out she worked for Jiggy

At this point Jigsaw had moved all the assets he needed for his projects into offshore accounts and shell companies so nothing was getting stopped.

He only has months left to live. He isn’t overly concerned about being exposed.

Hoffman was the only one he ever made real effort to keep secret because he was so helpful as a police contact
