Eddy often referred to them as scams himself and would often call the other kids suckers and similar things. Honestly though they weren't scams.

i was watching that episode where the eds build a city recently and they genuinely let everyone have a good time, then johnny dumps all their deservedly earned quarters everywhere and everyone beats up the eds to take their money back

like that was kind of unfair right?

      Exactly how are they scams?

I think it's because they frame it all around lies, instead of whatever the activity actually is and the other kids just don't being lied to. Like saying you're going to take them around the world but it's really the only other side of the neighborhood. Could still be a fun trip, some nice sights, but it was still a lie and we're supposed to believe that the kids still have some childhood nativity that maybe the Eds could pull it off this time but even when it's fun, it's still a lie.
Also, all the stuff they sell they claim is food is really like mattress clippings, paint chips, old plastic, etc. but said to be edible, so I am sure some of the kids are mad the Eds have fed them literal garbage. It's just a status-quo show, so we're not supposed to scrutinize why the kids never learn.

What said. Most of the scams are scams because Eddy is outright lying to them about what he's selling. Now it could be a fun experience regardless. But if you tell me you can speak to the dead, don't show me Ed covered in flour on a drawstring and expect me to be Amused.

eddy is consistently scummy and oversells the reality of their often underwhelming gimmicks.
If they were legitimate, eddy would have no reason to act like a rat

Because the Eds were gaslit into thinking they were so the other kids would feel justified for bullying, and they get to take advantage of their services for free.

The problem is that most of their scams were hazardous or didn't live up to their end of the bargain.

The only legitimate operations I think they pulled were the river boat ride and the shooting gallery. Those two were genuinely good ideas on their end, and their failure wasn't due to self sabotage.

A lotta people bring up Edtropolis as a scam that should've worked but the crazy thing about Edtropolis is that the Eds didn't charge admission for the city. The city itself is free to enter and rather they used the city to facilitate smaller, city based scams like Ed's tattoo parlor where he drew tattoos on you with a marker. Which I can outright say is definitely a scam. Especially cuz Ed's a dipshit who drew the wrong thing.

They're canonically the reason that jimmy has to wear braces. The fact that they did it again 3 more times at the fact is damning.
