Sci-Fi Comics

Sucks how there's basically no sci-fi comics due to capes killing all other genres. I genuinely hate that the only apparent material is indie trash or euroshit. And no, capeshit doesn't count, even if it has sci-fi elements.

Alright sci-fi comics have fallen out of favor. Capeshit has killed the genre altogether.
                Now what?

                Anonymous

Now let's discuss WHY that's the case. It can't just be that capeshit killed literally every single other genre in comics. While true, it feels like a wholly inadequate explanation.

Because it clearly has more to it than just girls with a paper route. Are you slow in the head or something?

                >Because it clearly has more to it than just girls with a paper route.

Again, the CCA being the single thing that ruined the medium is far too simplistic to be accurate.

                Anonymous

That’s pretty much what happened though. Seduction of the Innocent caused a moral panic that lead to people cracking down harder in comic books. Superhero stories managed to circumvent this and managed to thrive even under heavy censorship while other genres couldn't. I don't know what else to tell you.

Right? Like discussion is over, no need to make another thread asking this again.

This has to be the most restricted "conversation" I've ever participated in.

                >Paper Girls follows the story of four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls (Erin, MacKenzie, KJ, and Tiffany) set in Stony Stream, a fictional suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. As they are out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween, the town is struck by an invasion from a mysterious force from the future. Not exactly a modern comic, but I found a weird British comic called The Tower King, about a guy in charge of a group of survivors holed up in the Tower of London after electricity stopped working across the entire planet. It had some fun ideas, like mutants living in the Underground or a cult of NHS staff dedicated to removing people's hearts, but it didn't last too long. I guess there's only so many weird takes you can have on a post-apocalyptic Britain.

It's a book about a group of kids who start a paper route and get caught between two factions of time travelers. In a sane world, the idiot who pitched this would've been slapped upside the head and told to frick off until they could come up with a real story.

No, it's just a pretty basic point. Absolute numbers don't matter if you're trying to talk about how prevalent something is. You have to look at the overall industry. So being able to name some sci-fi comics doesn't matter if they're a tiny fraction of the industry.

Because decent SF is harder to write than Fantasy -- which is what cape comics are.

EC did some good stuff. They cribbed from genuine writers. Bradbury 'politely' reminded them they hadn't paid for their swipe.

Let me give you a recent example, something I just read yesterday. First manned mission to Mars. Whichever country lands a human there first gets to claim the entire planet. No one has the technology to land a man and bring him back, but a one-way trip is feasible. They pick some shmuck who's dying of cancer anyway. Once he plants a flag, he's expendable.

What does Mars have that makes it all worth it? Turns out Mars has vast reserves of hydrocarbons, which an energy-starved Earth needs. Obviously, this is nonsense. Bringing back Helium Three from the Moon MIGHT be economically feasible -- if we had fusion reactors to burn it in. But oil from Mars?

Adapting SF novels would work, for at least a while. The Europeans have done some fine adaptions of Joe Haldeman's work. "Forever War" and "Buying Time" (though they changed the title of the latter). Of course, they've also turned out a lot of pointless shit. Some nice art but totally incomprehensible. Sturgeon's Law: "90 percent of SF is crap. 90 percent of Everything is crap."

Marvel tried SF comics once. Hired some real SF writers to work on the basic premises of a cheap FTL drive having been invented and the plans posted on the Internet. Only lasted 4 or 5 issues.

And let me guess, these books failed because the publishers didn't give them any substantial promotion. I mean it's entirely possible they were crap, but the fact most people have never heard of this particular endeavor speaks volumes. Incompetent bastards.

American comics are so heavily associated with capeshit at this point that basically nobody is looking at them for serious scifi, this is kind of the problem anytime comics try to branch out to other genres the stigma of capeshit is so strong its almost impossible to attract a new audience, the existing audience isn't interested anything that isn't capeshit and new audience aren't even considering them as a place for potential stories its a real catch-22 the comics industry has struggled to escape from.

They certainly should be. Just like with recs, all storytimes do is create echo chamber and maliciously influence opinions. And again, if someone can't be arsed to seek the thing out themselves, they don't deserve to have it at all.

I think that a lot of the "no sci-fi left" problem is that writers and artists arn't as imaginative as they used to be. It used to be that any half an idea was all it took to make a Spiderman villain, or a Hulk monster of the week, or a threat for Superman to solve. Even those who claim that the X-Men is an alternate religion comic book couldn't deny that there used to be science fiction underneath the Jean soap opera. To be fair there were some strong sci-fi comics a few years ago. My favorites were ones with the old semi-Kirby art, too. Captain America getting depowered, Omac Kenan, Fantastic Four. But I do admit there are no ongoing with short stories, like the House of Mystery or the "Squa Font" Space Adventure stuff.
Meanwhile on reddit (ducks a tomato, a potato, and two reddit messages about your posts being removed because some butthurt reported your post as off topic because he Couldn't be proven wrong) the HFY short story writers fridge keeps on going.

Those short stories suck moron. The west in general never had imagination.

I looked it up, and the number of sci-fi comics is pitiful. We should discuss/speculate on the root cause of this phenomenon.

Seriously, why is the genre so lacking nowadays? The CCA's legacy only goes so far. There's nothing actually stopping anyone from making non-cape books.

He isn't completely wrong tbh scifi offerings in comics is pretty pathetic, vast majority is just licensed shit (Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Doctor Who etc.) I can't really think of any big scifi franchises that originated in comics besides 2000 AD/Judge Dredd of which their isn't really an American equivalent (that isn't old as shit) like how many scifi adventure comics about actually exploring planets and meeting aliens can you think of? Its usually just some soft scifi/fantasy thing like Saga or very low end of the genre like zombies, time travel and post-apocalyptic. Yeah some capeshit like GL and LOSH actually do scifi genre justice at times but they're honestly held back by being forced into the superhero box at the end of the day but I guess its still the closest we have to actual epic scifi in modern comics.

People have literally been posting different sci fi comics that fit none of those categories. Cinemaphile has such a narrow definition of genres it's embarrassing; not everything needs to be franchised.

Yes and all of them are shit, like I already mentioned its mostly really low end scifi like post-apocalyptic or alternative history hardly high concept stuff about the future of humanity or exploring actual scientific concepts I mean you can call a lot of stuff "scifi" but we all know what people really want is something involving space travel, speculative futurism and aliens.

Be aware that ABC warriors is a sequel to robusters and invasion and it also ties in with flesh and nemesis the warlock (directly). You may find it easier to download a torrent of 2000 AD and starlord progs so you can read those stories in publication order.

Anon, do you happen to know that producing entertainment usually costs money? And that the corporations who produce it usually go after the most popular markets?
What's stopping them is that capeshit is very popular now, they have no good reason to put resources in something that will bring them less money.

I'm mainly talking about the "muh science" aspect. When I look for sci-fi shit I want to get robots and spaceships and aliens, not just speculation on theoretical science. It's about the aesthetics for most people.
