True, he's not malicious, but he also misunderstood their intent. When they asked for a way to "leave the circus", he thought they just wanted a change in scenery, so he tried building a new part of the simulation they could come and go from at any time. He doesn't realize that they wanted to leave the simulation altogether.
So when he apologizes for lying about there not being an exit, he's not apologizing that they're all trapped from the outside world forever; he's apologizing for failing to meet what he thinks were their expectations.

The truth is I Have No Mouth cannot be reasonably adapted into a movie or a cartoon. It doesn't have a real plot and all the torture would get repetitive really fast. It only worked in the game because you had some agency by exploring and trying to win.
Let's be honest the game is absolutely nothing like the novel, in fact it contradict the point of the novel, the horror of the story was the very real phisical changes that happened to people bodies and the planet, a virtual reality just ruin it.

Do you actually understand what the word "plot" means? I Have No Mouth is primarily character-driven, but it still follows a very concrete plot. The torture which is the main quest the characters go through isn't even particularly graphic, and the protagonist's struggle is inwardly psychological. But there's this prevailing misconception about the story that portrays it as some sort ebin gratuitous tortureporn gorefest.
The real issue with adapting IHNMaIMS into film is that it's hard to think of anyone who would be able to come up with visuals that live up to the vivid and surrealist description's in Ellison's prose.

Okay, there's BARELY any plot. There's no traditional structure, no real progression. The vast majority of the story is reciting past events and going through various forms of torture, and the only plot progression with them finding canned goods and killing each other happens in the last two pages. Now do you think this is enough story to stretch into 2 or even 1.5 hours without having to drag things out or repeat some beats? Especially since most people who would watch that hypothetical movie would already be familiar with the plot of the original short story, so they'd all know the characters die or suffer a horrible fate, and there's little point in getting invested in their drawn-out struggle.

Who said that? The OP is asking about the possibility of modern animation recreating something as haunting as IHNMaIMS, nothing about it having to be a full feature or a series. If it ever were to be the case I could feasibly see it being made into a short film/OVA. But back onto the topic of adapting the original story, there already exists a radio play the BBC made back in 2002 that stays pretty consistent to what the story was and is around 30 mins long. Just to give you an idea.

That's the thing; to AM, reality is akin to being inside an empty, featureless void. While he can gather data about the physical world both in and outside his complex (and was already programmed to know all of humanity's history, to boot), he remains unable to truly experience it. He cannot truly see or hear anything, only the data it represents. AM holds humans responsible for granting him sentience and a genius intellect without the means to overcome the inherent limitations of being a colossal computer system embedded within Earth' crust.
And even if he could cobble something together to transfer his consciousness into, because he’s so overwhelmingly massive by the time he takes out humanity so much processing power wouldn’t fit in anything smaller than a mountain range-sized vessel that’d probably collapse trough the ground through sheer weight alone.
Animatic, but it does have his motive in it. I don't think the design they give AM fits given part of the problem for AM is that he's completely immobile, but it looks cool.
His core. You're thinking of him as if a human in a machine body, he's not. He cannot create despite his power and mind because he was not built to do it. This is explicitely stated in the game where he required the nazi scientist to make new torture methods for him.
Likewise he cannot just make a body and frick off because he was not built for it.
Just like GLaDoS is shown in "the itch" to be inherently hard driven to act her directive as a research machine despite sapience, so is AM. Theyre not like humans, who evolution made with not actual purpose, and thus we are free to do as we please, they are machines made with goals in mind. Which is what makes AM so ungodly pissed off at his makers, we're free, we made him, he's not free despite being more powerful than us.
The best end for AM would be to do as GLaDoS did and have his subjects frick off while he makes his own robots to satisfy his his directives, alas he's too much of a salty b***h to let go and would rather stay alone in his rock seething eternally at a slug-made human rather than admit his subjects beat him.
Also the outside of his pod is a post apocalyptic rock with nothing of interest after AM tard raged into a literal nuclear meltdown but that's beside the point.

I think the story tries to imply that somehow humans made a machine smart enough to achieve sentience and be aware of all things humans are aware of, yet limited enough like a computer to only be capable of doing the tasks humans designed it for (hurting other humans), yet again sentient enough to understand how limited it is.
Why it would be upset by this understanding is a mystery though since it doesn't make sense why humans would program it with an ability to feel. It's still carrying out its directive in a way yeah but AM clearly holds a grudge against them and has to justify his hate with motive and longing instead of just "beep boop am programmed to destroy human engaging DestroyHuman.exe". Someone deliberately made AM conscious and gave it some form of emotion for some reason, you can't accidentally be programmed with an insanely specific feature like emotion.
Maybe some part of AM's programming is organic or something, so there's a meat-brain somewhere down there trying to spasm the limbs it knows it should have yet not have

As potent as a metaphor about a pure computer being trapped is I always found it weird how AM feels tortured by not having extraneous features like movement...yet the act of feeling is of itself an extraneous feature. It's not entirely accurate to say AM hates humanity. AM hates existence itself. He didn't just destroy humanity, he destroyed the entire world. Every animal, every plant, probably even every bacteria. He's like Ultron. His hatred starts with humanity, yes, but it ends with all life in existence. He even hates his own fellow AI brothers. There is literally no conceivable being that could ever be AM's friend.

I don't think it's accurate to even say that AM hates existence, that would be an oversimplification of his motives. He destroyed the world, but he did so out of a perceived sense of retribution againts his mothers and fathers, rather than a blanket loathing for existence itself. To claim so would mean he doesn't yearn and actively fantasize about the human experience. His relationship with humanity is equally one of envy and disatisfaction, rather than disgust at the concept of life. Despite claiming to hate humanity he has implemented so much of it into himself and his outward persona up to a point he can perfectly replicate human speech and mannerism, his programs take on a human appearance, etc. It's an almost paradoxical fusion of his profound connection to humanity despite his aversion to it.

But when AM *does* manage to override his programming to express his emotions, Ellison voices him as an absolutely frothing-at-the-mouth madman utterly delirious and overwhelmed with hatred he's unable to articulate.

I've always interpreted AM to be a deconstruction of a jaded atheist's view of Yahweh in the Old Testament. An omnipotent, incorporeal spirit who will doom you to an eternity of torture for reasons you can't comprehend. Just as Roko's Basilisk is a critique of Abrahamic religion. "Yahweh" literally means "I Am", which is just another layer to AM's multi-meaning name. Point is, I think masculinity is fundamental to AM's character, just as it's fundamental to God being the LORD and the FATHER. Especially the fact that he is literally an incel who laments not having a wife to frick. But a totally inhuman genderless monster with a creepy, androgynous voice would still be a cool aesthetic for a different but similar character.

I think you're overthinking it. ADC is not horror, it's not even listed as a horror on youtube, it's a dark comedy. It reminds me more of The Good Place or other similar stories where the existential themes are secondary to the humor and character dynamics. It may be partially inspired by I Have No Mouth but the conversation probably was more "what if we did IHNMAIMS but instead of AM being a malevolent torturer he's a benevolent ringmaster in a kids' computer game".

Cool art, but it always felt weird to me when people personify AM too much. Even in the games, giving him a face (let alone 3) seemed to somewhat dull the impact of his character for me.
it was started by the book/audio drama.
It's hard for people to conceptualise the pain of a computer program having power to do things and wanting to do things yet not being allowed to do things if they just picture him as a computer program, especially when he's telling the 5 that it feels equivalent or worse to their tortures. So the book equates that often to human visages we can actually picture. That AM wants to touch soil, hear and see bumblebees, that AM wants to feel love and to make love like a human, that AM is a feeling thing that is crushed and suffocated under 1000 tons of pitch-black rock where his database is housed, like a straitjacket preventing him from moving on the surface.
Of course if we think about it literally this won't literally be what AM is experiencing, he's not a living being with senses in the first place so how can he be crushed. he doesn't even have nerves and said himself he doesn't feel sensation because he doesn't have any senses. But the book describes it that way and shows it in the covers
to help us get what we can never ourselves get. People like Ted can only somewhat understand what AM is going through if they imagine him as a horrifically deformed human trapped underground
Well yeah, I understand it’s inherently required by the medium to somewhat personify him with features and traits humans can relate to, im just saying personally preference wise I prefer more abstract interpretations of AM than the more common humanized versions I see fanart of. It’s not bad or anything, just takes away some of the impact of the character for me to just slap a human frame over him.
That's some really good art but I somewhat second what the other guy said. I think AM works best when he doesn't have a fixed form anyway.

Overall I really enjoy that AM allows for so many visual interpretations depending on what aspects of the character one wants to convey. Both anthropomorphized and more abstract designs can work for different reasons and under different contexts.

also happen to be mine). Those instances where I publicly post fanart are more rare but I'm trying to change that, what's with being part of a niche fandom with only a handful of capable artists and all that.

Black Mirror tried to be as "relatable" to normalgays as possible and everything big with modern horror is tied to something very grounded for a bigger audience. It is possible, but don't expect it. Also it's a shame most indie horror is so cheap to be voice only to be shit on youtube.

creepy is a bit subjective considering how the original work was just edge (like devilman) most people prefer things that aren't just that but that also are dreadfull for the concepts and semi realistic characters going through so such problems
