HBOMAx didnt have 60M subs, they added HBO and HBOMax together to get that number. They never revealed the exact breakdown of which service got which. It was probably 40M for HBO and 20M for HBOMax

All HBO users got free HBO Max at the same price ($14.99) though, it's the same thing now.

it wasnt universal and it depended on which carrier you got your HBO from. Also you had to activate HBOMax and it wasnt automatic which lots of HBO subscribers didnt do.

Yeah you had to activate it so a few boomers wouldn't do it I guess you're right. The actual number of subscribers is 76 million though, considering the price they're pulling more gross revenue than disney+ hahah this streaming business is crazy man

with all the moves Discovery is making, it is pretty obvious what they are doing.

      1. HBOMax is getting folded into Discovery+. They are stopping making original scripted content for HBOMAX and going for cheap reality show content like Shark Week or Property Brothers.
      2. HBO will stay as it is and probably be 'beefed' up
      3. Movies will be big-budget blockbusters from now on. No mid-tier or cheap movies like Batgirl.

This is pretty much a compilation of everything I didn't want in my streaming services.

I like low budget films when they aren't pretentious or trying to be more than a simple weekend option. Netflix has made a business model out of this kind of thing, so I don't understand why HBO can't continue to do this particularly for superhero shows which are basically prime ground for this. I despise reality TV, and if I wanted to watch it there's so much freely available already that I have 0 reason to sub for it. There's also no reality TV show that entices anyone to sub to anything, period, because its all relatively the same. And I barely care about the main HBO channel, since all the shows end up on max anyway and I don't need to wait around for them to air. HBO also airs shows back to back anyway the exact same as if someone were binging them, so max is literally just a more convenient way of watching the exact same way that the channel provides.

          Anonymous

          > Netflix has made a business model out of this kind of thing, so I don't understand why HBO can't continue to do this
Netflix stock tanking was probably the reason for these decisions

            Anonymous

Not really. Netflix did great with stuff like to all the boys, kissing booth, and so on. Young adults really don't care that much about quality, nor do comic book fans so long as you're making stories for characters that might otherwise get overlooked.

The problem for Netflix is that they have no premium offerings beyond stranger things to pull people onto the service in the first place. HBO doesn't have that problem, they have the opposite issue. HBO shows are generally always going to be a draw, and they have a number of hits on par or past stranger things in popularity with general audiences. Their main issue is filling out the library with stuff that will work for specific interest groups. DC animated shows are currently doing that, but they don't have much else and animation isn't an appealing way to get new people interested. Low budget reboot movies and live action cheap superhero movies/shows would have been a sensible move for them.

This. Current corporate "culture" promotes shareholder value meaning that board of directors don't care about building a brand's value over a long period of time, but extracting the maximum amount of value over a short period of time to appease faceless shareholders. Then when the brand is in the gutter they move into the next company to cannibalize. Short termism is vampirism and its literally killing everything good about America.

Back in the old days guys like Disney and Ford realized the utility in creating high quality products that acted as investments in the future of their brand. Now everything is centered around cutting costs.

tl;dr no one is invested in the future, there is no common culture, people are out to make quick buck by destroying the old gods.

Does zaslav even watch YouTube or any social media video platforms? Reality like tv media is being produced now by YouTubers/tiktokers with the same if not better production quality than all the discovery tv shows do. It’s unironically dinosaur brain mentality thinking. The only thing I can wrap my head around is that the rumors that he wants to sell this discovery/Warner mega merger to Comcast due to his 17 year history with the company explains this absolute crazy shift in business.

He won’t sell it, he wouldn’t have bothered cleaning and prepping this much and the merger was built on the promise that AT&T shareholders would profit. Worst case scenario Zaslav is a stubborn oldgay that tries to Discovery everything like canning HBOmax in favor of Discovery+ and focusing on shitty cable TV. Best case scenario he cleans everything up and starts some good projects, brings comics to max like viz media, and capitalizes on anime. AT&T gutted HBO and Warner Bros to prop up a streaming service that they could bundle when selling internet service to Americans.

AT&T sold WB to a cable TV empire.

The cable TV empire now owns HBO and wants to restore prestige to it.

homie Chad was finished filming and was about to air that night before they completely threw it away. Batgirl was 90% finished and in testing. If it's on hbomax then its up in the air and its future is uncertain.

Anything renewed post merger is safe. Batgirl was made before that, it was never going to make money and is better as a tax write off.

you don't renew something and then cancel it, especially when you gave the green light to renew it.

Netflix did that with The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. It's not unheard of.

no but it wouldn't make financial sense here. Batgirl does because it was an instant loser. the movies they removed from HBOmax to VOD sucked or had extremely niche appeal.

he's ditching the flotsam from the budget. none of the moves he made will upset the brand in the slightest

                >no but it wouldn't make financial sense here
It does, what didn't make financial sense was greenlighting so much shit in the first place.
None of the streaming shows or movies are profitable. The millions spent on a season of Tokyo Vice for instance do not translate to subscribers. That's why Zaslav is cutting the fat, because that's what he was brought in to do and he sees that HBOmax is a house of cards and he's trying to do preemptive damage control before the stock tanks like Netflix's.

                Anonymous

according to parrot analytics Tokyo Vice is the top 3% for viewed dramas, it performs really well. not every show will draw new subs but you have to maintain the subs you have which is what Tokyo Vice does.
you don't cancel a show you just renewed if people are actually watching it.

This, the existing, well loved shows from HBO almost certainly aren't going anywhere. Sopranos, GOT, The Wire, Sex and the City etc... What might be jeopardy are smaller, critically acclaimed series without the same level of clout as the HBO canon. Station Eleven for example.

It's also popular among the best demographics including the 18-30 female dem, that is high income impulsive consoomers dumbasses. You can't get to those with the sopranos or the wire, but GoT and euphoria do the trick better than basically anything else

Some of the many projects cancelled by Warner Bros. since the merger with Discovery:

CNN+ and all of its programming just a matter of days after its launch.

    Raised by Wolves (HBO Max)

    Close Enough (HBO Max)

    Gordita Chronicles (HBO Max)

    Made for Love (HBO Max)

Chad (TBS, hours before its season premiere was set to air.)

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (TBS)

    Three Busy Debras (Adult Swim)

Joe Pera Talks with You (Adult Swim …Sigh.)

    Naomi (The CW)

    Legends of Tomorrow (The CW)

Snowpiercer (TNT, during production on their fourth season.)

The Wonder Twins film, shortly after the leads were announced.

Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, which was reportedly all but finished.

And now Batgirl, after the movie was already made.

batgirl is gone, it will never be released.
Flash is ending after season 9. It'll be on Netflix for 5 years after its last season. that's apart of the old CW streaming deal with Netflix. so most of the Arrowverse shows pre 2020 will be on Netflix for a few more years

Stargirl was renewed and will be airing I think sometime this month. Superman and Lois was renewed. this one is weird because apparently it's one of HBO's most watched shows in the Latin American market and as CW shows it's ratings are decent. both are inexpensive to make so they're probably safe for now.

Everything that’s not Black Adam, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, The Flash, The Batman 2, Peacemaker S2 is getting scrapped. We’ll have to wait for news of the supposed flash reshoots to see where the continuity is going, I think Keaton is gone though and Affleck is back in. I also haven’t even seen news of reeves confirming the penguin series and arkham series were safe. I’m betting Zaslav is going to throw out bad robot for being a nothingburger.

They’re not killing it. I think people are misunderstanding what’s going on here. The Gordita Chronicles is the perfect example for a show getting axed.
It gets rave reviews from journos because it's a Latinx coming of age comedy about a fat black Dominican girl in Miami during the 80s. written by a fat black Dominican woman.
it hits all the SJW marks but no Hispanic person will watch it. in fact almost nobody watched it. every streaming service knows exactly what is watched and watch isn't. they know the shows viewers like, which ones they binge, and so on. now more than any other time it is easier to make shows your audience wants and it doesn't cost anything to discover it.

HBO is gutting the shows critics love but literally nobody watches and we're never good ideas in the first place.
