Seriously, what the frick was his problem?

He literally sets everything up so that Luke sees his father (whom he doesn’t know is his father at the time) kill his mentor in a lightsaber duel. He does this to try to manipulate Luke into committing patricide, so that he will kill Anakin and clean up the mess he and Yoda made. Obi Wan is kind of an butthole when you really think about it. Just look at the smirk in picrel. He knows exactly what he is doing

the old jedi order was fricked up and wrong about everything. the prequels make this unambiguously clear but it's there in the OT as well.
luke's able to surpass them and achieve what they think is impossible in part because he doesn't even know the details of the weird shape they'd contorted themselves into and so doesn't bother trying to imitate it, he just trusts the force.

Very true. It is just funny to me that Obi Wan skates by without criticism because he is a fairly affable old man when he commits this manipulative psychopathic action

      >the prequels make this unambiguously clear
was that intentional though? I feel like that's just Lucas not taking the time to properly redraft his script or put any deeper thought into it.

        >was that intentional though?
i think so. like i said, it's there in the OT already: both obi-wan and yoda are wrong about vader being irredeemable.

I'll have to consider this when I watch it again. also I haven't seen the prequels in probably over a decade.
But regarding the OT, I always thought of the warnings from Obi Wan and Yoda to just be a way of adding tension and drama; not as an actual commentary about the Jedi.

Dooku literally tells Obi wank the truth to his fricking face and he is still too moronic to realize that he and all the other Jedi are moronic.

RotJ is entirely about Luke rejecting what Obi-Wan and Yoda tell him and trusting his heart, and being right where they were wrong.

Not to sound like a pretentious homosexual. But this is how you know the OT and the prequels to a lesser extent are miles ahead of the sequel trilogy and the Disney shows. Can you think of any plot Point from any nuwars media that generates this level of discussion? This is just one scene from the first movie that can generate an interesting discussion.

If Rise of Skywalker wasn't so terrible "was Vader speaking to Kylo?" Could have been the same basic discussion.

My bet, he cucked Anakin with Padme as well,
Anakin subconsciously felt it and it was the main reason, he turned into the darkside

he knows Vader is the only one that can take on the emperor, so he is pushing things to a head in the hope that vader will do the right thing.
he knows luke cant kill vader either.

lucas had it all planned out.
no wait he famously diddnt, i bet he diddnt have any idea what obi's motives were at the time, he just thought it would be a good dramatic thing to do.
and here you are 40 years+ later getting your little knickers in a twist about what sort of person he must be.

Vader wasn’t originally meant to be Luke’s father but they decided to change him to be so sometime during the production of Empire. This is why there’s some inconsistencies throughout the original trilogy. They were making shit up as they went along.

      >sometime during the production of Empire
Pre-production, actually. It was like the third draft of the script, IIRC.

      >making shit up as they went along.
Yeah, Luke and Leia similarly weren't siblings until well into the writing of Jedi. That's why the they get shipped so hard through the first two films, which feels super awkward in retrospect.

When Yoda says "There is another" in Empire, Lucas didn't even have Leia in mind yet.
