Shogun sucks cock

>"Duuuude it's like Japanese Game of Thrones!!! Epic political intrigue!!"
>Entire show has a washed out saturated grey filter, making the daylight scenes ugly and uninteresting
>Random torture gore scene in the first episode where a man gets boiled alive, complete with gratuitous close-up shots of his face melting off
>This is never mentioned again, doesn't have any consequences, and only exists for shock value
>Ishido very obviously murders a politically powerful regent and blames it on bandits - zero consequences
>Every line out of Mariko's mouth is some half-baked philosophical bullshit
>Lady Ochiba emotes and speaks like a fricking cartoonish anime villain
>Mariko's husband returns after being thought dead right after she fricked the protagonist only days after, and now they all just happen to need to live under the same roof - wowzers how dramatic and definitely not contrived
>Protagonist hangs up a rotting bird beyond the point of being edible despite intending to cook it, he jokingly tells the villagers they'll die in broken Japanese if they touch it
>Instead of clarifying the obvious language barrier, the villagers execute the gardener who disposes of it because of MUH DISHONOUR
>Protagonist blames himself instead of the very obviously moronic villagers
>Mariko is able to physically defend herself with a fricking polearm twice her size in a restrictive dress, and is able to overpower and kill soldiers twice her size
>Episode 6 spends half an hour on an unrelated courtesan subplot that goes nowhere

This show is utter garbage and is the biggest psyop of the year. Frick all of you for tricking me into watching this trash.

    >>"Duuuude it's like Japanese Game of Thrones!!! Epic political intrigue!!"
Both stories are based on real political/military conflicts.
show has a washed out saturated grey filter, making the daylight scenes ugly and uninteresting
Yes that is a pain point.
torture gore scene in the first episode where a man gets boiled alive, complete with gratuitous close-up shots of his face melting off
The show isn't a glorification of Japan, they show in several scenes how backwards and diminished the Nips are, the scene where that guy has to kill himself and his child for speaking out of turn is another example, or the gardener dying for no reason.
    >>This is never mentioned again, doesn't have any consequences, and only exists for shock value
Also to show the conflict between the Portugues and Brits is for real.
very obviously murders a politically powerful regent and blames it on bandits - zero consequences
That literally happened 10 minutes ago in terms of continuity

line out of Mariko's mouth is some half-baked philosophical bullshit
      She's japanese
      >>Lady Ochiba emotes and speaks like a fricking cartoonish anime villain
She's a Japanese woman with power
's husband returns after being thought dead right after she fricked the protagonist only days after, and now they all just happen to need to live under the same roof - wowzers how dramatic and definitely not contrived
Where else would he stay but with his wife?
hangs up a rotting bird beyond the point of being edible despite intending to cook it, he jokingly tells the villagers they'll die in broken Japanese if they touch it
of clarifying the obvious language barrier, the villagers execute the gardener who disposes of it because of MUH DISHONOUR
Yes they're Japanese they're fricking stupid, it's not designed to make them look like something they aren't.
blames himself instead of the very obviously moronic villagers
No he doesn't he blames them and he wants to go home.
is able to physically defend herself with a fricking polearm twice her size in a restrictive dress, and is able to overpower and kill soldiers twice her size
That training was not uncommon for women of that station and era. It's a warrior culture.
6 spends half an hour on an unrelated courtesan subplot that goes nowhere
The whole point was to punish Mariko for being a prostitute by making her watch the Anjin get a pull from the top c**t.

You're either a woman, a Black person, or Japanese bug who's upset at how backwards your ancestors were.

You're either a woman, a Black person, or Japanese bug who's upset at how backwards your ancestors were.

The biggest mistake they made that fixes all of this is that at the beginning of the book it was made pretty clear to Blackthorne that in Japan allegiance to your liege-lord is first and foremost. peasants to samuari, small fry samurai to the bigger ones and on up the chain. To defy one meant death, Hence the gardener. The Master said to touch it meant death. And the chunky samurai - acted a fool in front of his masters and betters when he should not have been really listening anyway - choppy chop. Thats why the "If I win" quip didnt make sense. If you're a small fry, oppose and beat your liege lord, that is the only 'reason' to do so. Thats what got the smirk (big laugh in the book) from Toranaga. They just are kinda picking to good bits out of the book and dramatizing them for the wrong reasons

Has nothing to do with Japan specifically but in general history yes the US is known for being the country that says “up yours” to rules and traditions and formed their own country.

Why didn’t Canada break British rule? Why not Australia? Etc

You didn’t disagree with me so I will take it you are in fact Americans so it is in fact ingrained in your psyche that breaking rules that are deemed as “unjust” or wrong or stupid is logical to you.

I don’t need to elaborate about all the faux pas American businessmen made in the 80’s-90’s by not following cultural traditions with the Japanese in business meetings. There are whole books about it. I think there is a famous quote from a automotive executive can’t remember if it was from Ford or Dodge who thought “these archaic rules are dumb I’m not gonna do that” and insulted the CEO of Toyota so bad they backed out of the meeting based on which seat the guy sat in at the restaurant.

None of the Japanese characters are interesting except pic related(fun fact actor is one qurter White) and maybe Ishido. The main guy is kind of charming in an autistic way and the Portuguese/Spanish characters seem interesting but we get too little of them.

Yes, every action is explained by inner thoughts. But of everyone. You learn the point of view of the big characters but also average soldiers and maids and their thoughts on what is happening. Its very dense but also fascinating. The main theme in the books is the culture differences, wheras in the show things just happen and its about the events and not why they happen and how people react to it.

Curious what you find interesting about Ishido? He's the most boring character to me, the actor is meh and his role in the plot is pretty barebones.

Up to the point he murdered a fellow council member Ishido struck me as the only lawful good character on the show, despite being framed as the baddie. His accusation of Toranaga threatening the peace by forming political marriages is a legitimate one and he's demonstrated to be rule governed. Knowing what Toranaga's historical counterpart does after taking power kind of cements that for me if that's the route the book/show goes down. Unironically Ishido did nothing wrong and Toranaga is the real snake

They SHOULD get better once Blackthorn and Mariko are in Osaka again towards the end, 9 or 10. Depending on how the 2024 show handles it. But really...who knows.

Most Japanese have somewhere between 10-30 per cent Jomon ancestry, Ainu and Ryukyuans have a higher amount. Also its funny when people try to cast the Jomon as a superior racial element when its literally a substrate of conquered and assimilated pre-Japanese peoples.

Upper classes have more Jomon blood you illiterate monkey. And the most genetically distinguishing feature of Japs vs Chinese and Koreans is the presence of haplogroup D

          Anonymous

The Japanese aristocracy all trace their ancestry back to the Yamato clan in some way or another. The remnants of the Jomon were the Emishi barbarians who resisted the spread of Yamato culture and imperial authority. Idk is this some kind of weird larp to avoid identifying with anything with a whiff of Korean about it and instead making out the more indigenous group to be the "true" Japanese, but then if you were to follow that to its conclusion the "true Japanese" would be the Ainu.

            Anonymous

It's a matter of fact that the Japanese upper classes have more Jomon ancestry. In your mind ot seems that two things aren't possible at once. Ainu have the most, upper classes second, lower classes third.

Whatever the case have been which led to that, probably aristocrats taking war brides or something, it seems like a bizarre thing to make some kind of Japanese racial superiority claim about a population that only makes up a relatively small fraction of the nation's gene pool and is mainly associated with pre-Japanese aborigines and ethnic minorities

here's how they could have made the show more interesting, but it would involve deviations from MUH BOOK.
    >anjin lands at small fishing village
    >he is brought to osaka
    >instead of taking him *back* to the same fishing village, which by now is fackin boring, he and toranaga go to a town that is loyal to toranaga, as in toranaga's home base.
    >from there anjin demands that they go get his crew, who have all been moved to another area. devote an entire episode to a prison break of his crew
    >toranaga rallys various leaders to his side with the help of the anjin, while the regeants seethe and prepare their side
    >epic battle of japs aligned with portugeez catholic vs toranaga and jap nationalists...conclusion

the show feels long and somewhat boring if you compare it to a movie like last samurai, which tells a similar story in a more compact 2 hours, complete with slow moments, dialogue, character building. we actually got a sense of tom cruise's character as well as the main bald guy's samurai leader. but in shogun we're 6 episodes in and every character seems very one dimensional.
    >toranaga is wise, calculating, and is falsely accused by the evil regents. we only like him because sanada is charismatic and doesn't look evil
    >anjin is smart and experienced, but just wants his men and his ship back. he also has no actual experience in fighting a war.
    >the three women have trouble pasts which no one gives a frick about
    >the funny traitor guy is just funny-looking and says funny shit. he is uncertain whether to betray the main guy or side with the regents, since the main guy is pretty influential and from a powerful family.
    >the son is a moron who looks too young but wants command of his own army
    >the funny guy's nephew is a moron who looks too young but wants command of his own army

if i were an average white person i wouldn't give a single frick about this show. it already starts dragging after the third episode.

here's how i would rewrite the entire show. and i'd finish it in 6-8 episodes, not 10. now compare what i wrote with how they have actually told the story so far, notice how much emphasis they put on the female characters and their background. does anyone even give a shit about mariko's father?

  63. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

nothing against sanada but he looks way too old to play the main guy. you would expect someone in his prime, around his early 40's, to have enough energy to do what's being shown in the story. he would have to look like someone that others would fear. sanada looks like he's near retirement. another issue is that they cast those two young guys to play the son and the nephew, and they both look too young to have any say in what goes on. the guy they cast as the one trying to play both sides looks perfect for the role, correct age where he's "getting too old for this shit" but also has to lock-in his retirement plan with one last smart move. the old general guy they cast as toranaga's right hand man general also looks good, but also too old.

lastly, it's hard to respect toranaga since we're introduced to him basically complying with the regents and surrendering to their demand that he stay at osaka. they didn't spend enough time clearly showing what exactly toranaga was being accused of.

      Anonymous

He's actually very close in age to the real guy who was 57 at the time, being around 61 when this was filmed.

        Anonymous

that's cool, but he does look old for a 61 yr old. he looks at least 5 years older than 61. maybe it's the slightly grey hair and the way he moves. like the cliff earthquake scene. i can see a youthful energetic 57 yr old guy making one last and necessary campaign to save his own life. there's a lot of filler stuff in the show, like the earthquake almost killing him, which can be seen as a bad omen that would make people NOT want to support his cause. and then there's the issue with the local army being either loyal to the traitor lord, or to higher lord toranaga who only visited them this one time when he needed their help.

the guy who plays the loyal general and father of fujiko, looks older than sanada, but actually moves like a badass samurai.

      >they didn't spend enough time clearly showing what exactly toranaga was being accused of.

The tv show fricks it up, in the book:

Toranaga wasn't accused of anything, he was in Osaka for meetings and other regency council stuff and could leave anytime he wanted but he knew Ishodo would have him assassinated by "bandits" the moment he was out of the castle, thus his ploy of dressing up as Kiri and secretly escaping, though Ishido found out and attacked him (with "bandits") but Anjin-ssan ultimately saves the day by sailing him out of the city.

There are whole paragraphs about Blackthorn's 'Love Spear'. The Japanese ladies swoon over him while attempting to bathe him. There's a conversation about how it could even fit, and whether barbarian women must be similarly "well-endowed" to be compatible. They decide that there are *some* Japanese courtesans who could 'take him fully', but it would require great skill.

During the bathing process, Blackthorn gets excited, and the matriarch of the house can barely handle the sight and says something like 'I can now die happy, having seen such a unit'. Then, he gradually becomes unexcited and she exclaims how disappointed she is that the experience is over.

I think that section is in chapter 3 of the novel in case anyone is interested.
