Okay, this says it’s a “lackluster $23M”
Another site says it’s a “solid $23M”
Another, “in first place with a soft $23M”
What should it be? Is $23M good or bad?
Considering the movie got an A- Cinemascore and was expected to get $25m at the absolute most. It’s doing ok, it may do nicely with word of mouth being positive.
Solid and soft are just nice ways of saying it's not doing well and underperforming. If it was a hit then they'd just say it was a hit. This heading for a flop but it's too soon to say whether it'll just be a mild disappointment or an outright bomb
It's not good but it's also not a disaster.
It has a $90 million production budget, and WB get ~50% of the box office money, so they are still far in the red.
Should certainly break even during its global box office run, and will be something that might attract HBO Max subscriptions once it lands there.
It made $18 million internationally for a combined $41 million WW. Unless it has some astounding legs it's gonna struggle to break even.
$175 million is straight up delusional. Doesn't really matter how well it does on VOD, by the tume it hits there WB will have made up it's mind about its failure or success
Exactly why I said somehow. It’s quite unlikely. Don’t get me wrong, I want this to succeed but if it fails at least it won’t be a huge financial failure.
that's true though. putting aside my kryptace fanshipping, their dynamic meshed so well i feel both promo pics and trailers shown the oppsoite what is shown in the movie, ace is not a complete douchebag except at the beginning and didn't last long before becoming likeable, the other pets didn't have too much spotlight as opposed what the trailer tried to show and the justice league weren't for background filler. i also notice that the trailer did deliberately connect clips that didn't take place from the same scene and changed some cgi models assets
The smaller budget means they can recoup costs easier with VOD, streaming and home video and kids movies are always hot for that kind of market. Even more so since the word of mouth is good.
Box office most certainly does matter because the more popular the movie, the better the merch sells. I honestly think however that WB wasn't banking on this being a hit considering how little marketing they did for it
Box office doesn't matter. Only thing that matters is merch sales. Box office and merch sales don't correlate. Batman is one of the top sellers of merchandise and yet the Batman movies haven't had spectacular box offices in recent years.
>dc puts out a super-pets movie >it under performs at the box office >meanwhile, they see a huge uptick in sales not only for merch directly created for the movie, but in other properties connected to the movie (more batman sales, more superman sales, more wonder woman sales, and so on) >this uptick alone vastly overshadows whatever they could've made at the box office >at the next shareholder meeting, they boast about how much money dc is making and nobody gives a frick about super-pets or whatever the frick because they're all lining their pockets with green
Again, box office doesn't matter. Movies like this are essentially big commercial campaigns, and whether the consumer goes and sees the movie itself or not, they will have heard about it, and that sticks the name "Batman" and "Superman" and "Krypto" in their head for when they go to the toy store to buy little Timmy a toy and don't know what the frick to get him. "Oh, get a Batman action figure, kids like Batman, there was a new Batman movie about dogs or some shit." Or when they buy Billy a new shirt, it's "Oh, that Superman shirt is cute, kids like Superman, they made a new Superman cartoon movie for kids. I didn't see it but it sounded funny enough."
From a pure numbers perspective, it's not good. With a $90M budget, it will not turn a profit from box office alone. In addition, as I understand it, WBA outsources CGI to Sony, so whatever portion of its budget devoted to that is going outside the company. There's a double sting to that.
On the other hand, $90M these days is considered a mid-range budget, and much of that surely went to the celebrity voice actors. This may have been to curry favor with them, or to fulfill existing contractual obligations on the cheap.
The calculus for whether this kind of movie is considered a success internally, or why it was even made in the first place, can be more complex than box office numbers.
$23M is okay, but it was under the projections, $25M. It's also less than what The Bad Guys did its opening weekend, $24M which was above the projected $20M. Basically it's doing well in the broad scope of animated films that aren't Illumination or Disney, but it's not doing doing well compared to what it needs in order to turn a profit.
Considering the movie got an A- Cinemascore and was expected to get $25m at the absolute most. It’s doing ok, it may do nicely with word of mouth being positive.
I hope if it’s successful they do a Superman movie
this, the guinea pigs were given some spotlight instead of being just filler villains. i really want to see it again because i missed the post credit scene
i love the movie, and the post credist scene got me excited for a sequel
but DC has made good animated movies than live action. if anything, DC should stick with animated or just improve because live actions are marvel territory although they are becoming less and less good
Look I am aware that if DC focuses on it they can make an animated film that runs circles around anything Marvel has ever done live-action or otherwise. But would it be fair if the best Disney can do is Big Hero 6? Into the Spider-verse is already better than their MCU Spider-Man movies and clearly is because Sony gives no fricks so long as they own Spider-Man.
>But would it be fair if the best Disney can do is Big Hero 6?
why does it matter if WB overcomes disney? they no longer give a crap about making good animated films
> why does it matter if WB overcomes disney? they no longer give a crap about making good animated films
Nothing, it would just be sad to have an opponent that can’t even fight back.

well that's disney fault for giving up for focusing on pointless crap
Death of Superman was surprisingly good all things considered. Flashpoint was better than the comic and Assault on Arkham mogs the live-action Suicide Squad movies effortlessly.
Aren't these movies pioneering their 3D division? It took a few seasons before Clone Wars reached movie quality CG so I'm not expecting DC to be perfect right off the bat.
I'll remind you anon. Spiderverse came after the Emoji Movie shocked everyone by how uninteresting and awful it was, then came The Star which nobody saw at all and probably everyone forgot it existed. After those, Hotel 3 was released. Nobody expected that Spiderverse could be good, yet it was.
Are you moronic or a WB shill? People were definitely expecting Spiderverse to be good cause it looked good and had a good team behind it. Also no Super pets was not good it just knew how to play with heart strings and barely at that. Legit in my theater kids were bored out of their fricking mind with it
I’m not a Disney shill though, I’m fact most of what they’ve put out is utter garbage especially of late. Frick the only actual fun animated kids movie to come out this year is fricking Minions and Bobs Burgers
I have a hard time calling Super Pets "amazing". Definitely "good, better than expected" but not more than that. Visually it doesn't do anything new, it's treading the same water Illumination currently does, just with much better character design. And the story was just fine. It's really Lulu that makes the story interesting because she's a fun villain to watch.
Like, if you've got some time to spare and just want some lighthearted fun, it'll be fine, but there are better options.
Im surprised Disney didn't look at Blue Sky's potential to make Marvel and Star Wars Animated Films to compete with Spiderverse since WDAS and Pixar always told them that making films on those two IPs was a moronic idea.
Is 23 mil really that much? And did anyone else find it weird how many borderline bestiality jokes there were? Like, haha I get it Krypto is jealous of Lois and those jokes makes for the story at least. But then the Thirsty guinea pig. And the raccoon joke. And then the squirrel ring joke. It's all harmless but still felt a little weird. I might be looking to much into it. It might have helped if people in the theater were actually laughing at them instead of being dead silent.
>$23 million for an animated kid's movie starring DC characters
just another nail in the coffin for movie theaters >what about Top Gun?
the industry can't survive on one or a few exceptions when everything else is underperforming to flopping, some even bombing.

Also there's zero new competition in family movies until like, November (sorry Sony that crocodile movie isn't going far)
Solid and soft are just nice ways of saying it's not doing well and underperforming. If it was a hit then they'd just say it was a hit. This heading for a flop but it's too soon to say whether it'll just be a mild disappointment or an outright bomb

Tbf at $90m production budget it can still recoup costs if it does well on VOD, especially if it somehow manages about $175m at the box office.

Exactly why I said somehow. It’s quite unlikely. Don’t get me wrong, I want this to succeed but if it fails at least it won’t be a huge financial failure.
Considering it was expected to make $25 million and undershot it and that reviews have been mixed to negative it’s probably not going to be a success
>mixed to negative
?
That's a pretty great audience score.
Most of the reviews I’ve seen say Keanu Batman and Rock/Hart dynamic are the only bright spots everything else sucked
that's true though. putting aside my kryptace fanshipping, their dynamic meshed so well i feel both promo pics and trailers shown the oppsoite what is shown in the movie, ace is not a complete douchebag except at the beginning and didn't last long before becoming likeable, the other pets didn't have too much spotlight as opposed what the trailer tried to show and the justice league weren't for background filler. i also notice that the trailer did deliberately connect clips that didn't take place from the same scene and changed some cgi models assets

Must be a day ending in Y
It’s performing within expectations. After Scoob I think WB is just happy they put out an animated movie that didn’t get torn to shreds critically
The smaller budget means they can recoup costs easier with VOD, streaming and home video and kids movies are always hot for that kind of market. Even more so since the word of mouth is good.
Box office doesn't matter. It's about selling merch and keeping the brand hot.

But there is hardly any merch either aside from some Fisher Price toys
>dc puts out a super-pets movie

no matter how much it made, they'll report it as a loss to get a tax break
$23M is okay, but it was under the projections, $25M. It's also less than what The Bad Guys did its opening weekend, $24M which was above the projected $20M. must love the mental gymnastics shills are giving to this post, lmao.
No, but they should do another Pet Avengers comic miniseries
Maybe they should have worked on getting a good normal Superman universe going before they tried a spin off with Superman’s dog.
I hope if it’s successful they do a Superman movie
I’m actually glad this shallow soulless Secret Life of Pets cash in failed
Found the mousecuck.
Life of Pets isn't mouseshit you homosexual.
It hasn’t failed though
She cute.
She looks like shit
I want clint's arrow shootin parrot
i love the movie, and the post credist scene got me excited for a sequel
Cringe
it's a funny movie. I loved it. I just went to support animated movies but this one just knocked it out of the park.
this, the guinea pigs were given some spotlight instead of being just filler villains. i really want to see it again because i missed the post credit scene
this scene made me smile like an idiot
nah they've got Spider-verse... or i suppose that's Sony
seriously, why isn't DC trying to make an animated film of that caliber, or Arcane instead of these hideous movies, both pets and Super Sons:
Because having theatrical animated movies mogging the shit out of the live action ones is a bad look for both DC and Marvel.
but DC has made good animated movies than live action. if anything, DC should stick with animated or just improve because live actions are marvel territory although they are becoming less and less good

DC needs any positive it can get, animated or otherwise. Plus, when was their last great animated movie?
Death of Superman was surprisingly good all things considered. Flashpoint was better than the comic and Assault on Arkham mogs the live-action Suicide Squad movies effortlessly.

I was surprised to be honest
B-but it's so good*!

Anti-Milesgays

Dumb Black person.

It’s funny they keep coming up with excuses these Disney shills.

They had Blue Sky Studios to do a Pet Avengers Film but i dunno Kevin Feige hates theatrical stuff not being connected to the MCU.
Probably an Pet Avengers by Disney TVA for Disney+ could work since DTVA will keep making non-MCU stuff after Moon Girl
Im surprised Disney didn't look at Blue Sky's potential to make Marvel and Star Wars Animated Films to compete with Spiderverse since WDAS and Pixar always told them that making films on those two IPs was a moronic idea.

anon, maybe lay off the furry porn
but Krypto is cute
both krypto and ace
>t. kryptace shipper
My theater only laughed at the antics of the turtle.
Does anyone have clips of the Justice League from the movie?
Honestly Lulu was a better villan than most of the recent DCEU antagonist
they should make an animated Marvel movie that isn't Big Hero 6.
people really overlook this movie but is not that impressive, just campy for a weekend watch, still i want it to succeed
