He was literally about to be sent away to prison because Carlo flipped, and even then he's living in constant paranoia because he has too many enemies.

I remember Tony going to prison being a possibility, but last re-watch I realised that it was actually a certainty. They've already linked him to Hijacking of Interstate Commerce, which is a federal crime and since Carlo talked, they can also fit him up with a Homicide. Being shot is the best thing that could possibly have happened to him in that finale, his future is bleak.

      Ignoring Chase
      >Running joke throughout the show is that "two black guys" get blamed for murders, two are seen walking into the diner
      >Flashback to Bobby saying "You probably don't even hear it when it happens" earlier in the episode
      >Members only jacket guy
      >Chrissy predicting "3 o'clock" when he had a near-death experience, which is where the Members Only guy is from Tony's POV
      The signs are all there

        Anonymous

        >Black guys walking into a restaurant means Tony is going to die
        >Bobby (who has never killed anyone at that point) pondering what its like to die means Tony is going to die
        >Guy wearing a jacket belonging to an episode title means Tony is going to die
        >The position at where the guy is sitting means Tony is going to die (despite the fact that he moves past Tony meaning that 3 o'clock is highly irrelevant and this wouldn't even be the first time they just dropped plot points)

I just don't buy it. If Tony died we would see it but as it stands his fate is ambiguous at best. I am a firm believer of him simply living. I understand these can be seen as foreshadowing and what not but then if there was so much build up to him dying than why not just deliver the pay off instead of cutting to black? Its clear the ending is way more nuanced than him getting shot in the head.

You've got to remember that David Chase is kind of weird. He hates it when things are made obvious. Think about the Russian, or Paulie's vision of the Virgin Mary or Furio's eventual fate or Tony's comment: "I get it!" He really wants things to be ambiguous, or at least to appear to be ambitious. It's pretty clear from what he's said that he thinks Tony died, but the bizarre hang-up that prevents him from just coming out and admitting it is the same bizarre hang-up which compelled him to end the episode with a smash cut to black.

            Anonymous

Him saying that Tony died is up for debate. He is very passive aggressive and has supported both sides of the argument for Tony dying and Tony absolutely not dying. But I seem to recall him talking him having a death scene in mind but stating that "they didn't do that". I still feel like the ending is too ambiguous to simply state that he died. Even then how would the Members Only guy even kill him? Nearly every hit on this show has been some guy walking up and the doming their target. Why would anyone just sit there and stare? And more specifically why would he walk to the bathroom? It could make sense in some meta level but I feel like that is just stretching and that when you really think about it in-universe Tony just doesn't die there.

              Anonymous

The whole thing about Members Only going to the bathroom is because that's exactly how Micheal Corleone takes out the corrupt cop in "Godfather" (it's the scene which AJ brings up after his failed attack on Junior) he goes to the bathroom because there's a pistol concealed behind the toilet.

the scene is supposed to make you nervous. tony clearly doesn't like that he has the choice of his back to the door or his back to the bathroom. they also literally tell you that phil ordered hits on all three of them and then went into hiding. which means the hits are going to go through no matter what, as he paid in advance.

Okay yeah it's a reference but why the frick would they conceal a pistol in a bathroom? That doesn't actually make sense in the context of the show. Phil tells his underlings to "make it happen" leaving it up to them to order their deaths. Silvio and Bobby get shot but then they have the sit down at the final episode behind Phil's back and they give the OK on his death. They have good reason to NOT kill Tony. Literally no one wanted this to the extent that Phil did.

                Anonymous

And I'm not saying the death has to make sense in reality but I mean that this notion that just because Godfather did it means that its going to be like the show seems weird. They definitely do reference the Godfather directly or in a meta level but the final scene is too ambiguous. I mean if it were a reference then it would have actually played out instead of cutting to black. It cutting to black pretty much makes it a scene of its own.

Very clear what happened. Tony gets assassinated by the guy in the 'Members Only' jacket (gun in the bathroom a la The Godfather), Paulie becomes boss after proving himself capable with those Mexicans, Patsy becomes underboss having provided Tony's location where he gets killed and getting revenge for Tony ordering his brother's Spoons murder, Meadow becomes like her mom Carmela marrying Patrick Parisi, Carmela becomes like Rosalie, and AJ becomes like Jackie Jr, trying to make it into his dad's business but ultimately failing and dying.

Literally the best Anthony could ever hope to be in the Family was "guy who works at one of our operations doing busywork while the actual work is done in the back room" and even that was out as soon as New York soured on the Jersey clique. With his last name, he's cursed.

Isn't that essentially what happened? The implication I got was that he's not actually doing anything productive at Carmine's studio, it's basically a no-work gig, like the one Finn had.

Near the end AJ only wanted the clout/money - not the life. NY would never recognize a Soprano successor.

If AJ was from literally any other family, he would be the type to work in a mob-run front business without even knowing it's a front. He would just be a really shitty mattress salesman or something, not trying at all, and unsure why he hasn't been fired yet for not actually making any sales.

In the final scene, was Tony in hell?
When Tony enters the restaurant he stares at himself. I think in that scene it seems that he was in a loop watching himself die in front of his family over and over again. Just like in the Irish bar, losing their rolls of dice over and over again, the one that Christopher saw after getting shot, and kept saying that was hell.
