It's trick ending. The last shot is the exact opposite of the first shot in tone, color, lighting, and action, but then...

It's just an inspiration for a Coke commercial. Despite any apparent epiphany, Don hasn't changed at all.

The whole scene is filled with tension however.

He keeps looking up from his seat and fixating on everything around him as his family comes in to join him for dinner. Then everything suddenly cuts to black.

It's meant to be ambiguous, and at the time probably meant to piss some fans off as there was an expectation that Tony would've been wacked in the final episode. However none of that was seen.

      >It's meant to be ambiguous
It was anything but ambiguous, you have to be sub 80 drooling moron(unfortunately the majority of the fans of this show belong in this group) to not know what happened to Tony what with the fricking several episodes long underlining and foreshadowing about what it feels like being whacked.

Who would kill Tony moron? He made peace with NY mob and nobody in his own family would dare go against him. People keep mentioning Patsy or some Eugene's relative, but a) Patsy was shown to be loyal to Tony a number of times (like when threatening Gloria) and nobody could blame Tony for Eugene's suicide after he became a made man.

The ending just wraps up what Tony's life will always be like - not being able to enjoy a family dinner without worrying cops are gonna barge in (facing a grand jury indictment) or someone whacking you. That's it. He doesn't die in the diner that night but could be arrested or gunned down at any moment. Conclusiontards keep grasping at straws making up plotlines and imagining nonexistent clues to turn a graat closing commentary into a generic happy/bad ending

NTA but Butchie ordered Tony's death with the intention of absorbing the Sopranos into the Lupertazzi Family, exactly as they privately stated their intentions to be. Butchie told Tony there'd be peace after Phil's death so he'd let his guard down

Butchie realized war is bad for business and that guys like Phil are stuck in the past. It's on the nose obvious with the Chinatown scene and the following conversation.

Phil killed himself when he made veiled threats against Butchie during that phone call. But that didn't change his intentions towards the NJ mob, they were still perceived as out of control and ripe for takeover

          >He made peace with the NY mob
He killed Phil in front of his family and ran over his head, there's limits to what you can do, the families stay out of it and he crossed that line. Tony was also far too greedy and ambitious for their tastes, having a more manageable NJ crew to handle would be in NY's best interests
          >Patsy
He never let go of his brother's death, he was just smart enough to never let it show, he was also worried for his son's safety considering Tony has a reputation for killing family and is highly protective of Meadow.
          >Paulie
An unreliable subordinate that was already trying to get into NYC's good graces earlier in the show, after Tony almost killed him during the Miami trip he knew his days were numbered if Tony was still around
          >Jacket guy
Vengeance for Eugene, just a hitman NY or Paulie sent

Point is Tony made a lot of enemies by the shows end

            >He killed Phil in front of his family and ran over his head, there's limits to what you can do, the families stay out of it and he crossed that line
They gave the go-ahead themselves. They don't give a frick about muh family witnessing the killing. Plus Phil's head being ran over wasn't Tony's fault, just an accident.

            >Patsy
It wasn't mentioned for like 5 seasons apart from the one awkward lunch conversation when he mentions it's their birthday. Again he showed to be loyal in half a dozen situations so it's kinda silly to claim it was all a ruse to get Tony's guard down, when it was never mentioned that he was planning a hit on Tony.

            >Paulie
The man literally had a picture of Tony on his living room wall. And as much as Tony contemplated whacking Paulie their relationship actually gets better over the last few episodes as Tony's reminded of Paulie's loyalty (that negotiation scene with the Latino gang, when Tony is impressed by Paulie's guts). It's why he brings Paulie to meet with Butchie, wouldn't do that if he didn't trust him. Speaking of which, if Paulie or NY wanted Tony gone, why not just do him in there in the warehouse when he's all alone.

James Gandolfini was doing the USO circuit when I was enlisted. Many celebrities (like Jay Leno) were notorious for being douchebags who were rude to actual troops but did USO anyway for PR purposes. But James was extremely polite to everyone and he'd go out to the smallest FOBs and COPs in the shittiest possible areas to meet the joes. He'd even man the 240B on Strykers when moving between locations (I've seen pictures). I was sad to hear about his loss but this clip you've posted is very nice

I think the most sensible theory is that he was shot in the diner in front of his family as punishment for whacking Paul in front of his, Paulie and Patsy were in on the whack but it was New York that carried it out

Did NJ kick up to NY like a subordinate, or were they a separate thing only collaborating in business deals
Some of the earlier seasons suggest they were the former but as it goes on they act more like the latter

      Anonymous

They were separate, the whole point of the final conflict was to make them subordinate to the Lupertazzis which succeeded

      Anonymous

They were a separate thing. Carmine would often take Tony down a peg, but imo only because of the age difference and Tony being a new boss.

        Anonymous

Carmine was the only one in the show fot to be a boss. Everyone else was either too emotional (Sack and Phil) or greedy (Tony)
I liked how they made it obvious he was part of the "old blood" kind if mobster whereas everyone else lived like Mafia movies portray them
