    realistically, how much of Dune 84 made sense to you?

    • 2 years ago
      Anonymous

      100% of it but that's only because I'd already read the book. I can only imagine how incoherent it must have appeared to the uninitiated.

      Still wish they'd given Lynch two movies like Villenueve got. His version looked so great but it just got chopped to pieces

          one complaint i have about the move is that messiah stories are cliche, but that's a plot point because the bene gesserit seeded messiah legends in stupid normies to control them in times of need. it's a farce, but the movie plays it straight.
          read Messiah, it's a great follow up. Paul hates being godemperor.

            When I read this tome years ago I got the impression it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. It was originally intended as a fable, but eventually they started to believe their own bullshit and try to make it a reality, and they succeeded.

    When my father, the Padishah Emperor, heard of Duke Leto's death and the manner of it, he went into such a rage as we had never before seen. He blamed my mother and the compact forced on him to place a Bene Gesserit on the throne. He blamed the Guild and the evil old Baron. He blamed everyone in sight, not excepting even me, for he said I was a witch like all the others. And when I sought to
    comfort him, saying it was done according to an older law of self-preservation to which even the most ancient rulers gave allegiance, he sneered at me and asked if I thought him a weakling. I saw then that he had been aroused to this passion not by concern over the dead Duke but by what that death implied for all royalty. As I look back on it, I think there may have been some prescience in my father, too, for it is certain that his line and Muad'Dib's shared common ancestry.

      These were my favourites especially with the audiobook. Everybody should listen that shit, they had large cast in that.

      • 2 years ago
        Anonymous

        That audiobook is weird because they have a cast of like 6 people playing the different characters but some chapters are just read by the narrator so it was hard to follow at first. I prefer the later ones where they have the narrator read the whole chapter and just put on voices for the different characters

    Only greater maturity could help him understand the chronic mental limitations of the “professor-doctor” type—the product of generations of pathetic Puritanism; kindly, conscientious, and sometimes gentle and amiable, yet always narrow, intolerant, custom-ridden, and lacking in perspective. Age has more charity for these incomplete yet high-souled characters, whose worst real vice is timidity, and who are ultimately punished by general ridicule for their intellectual sins—sins like Ptolemaism, Calvinism, anti-Darwinism, anti-Nietzscheism, and every sort of Sabbatarianism and sumptuary legislation. West, young despite hi pplmarvellous scientific acquirements, had scant patience with good Dr. Halsey and his erudite colleagues; and nursed an increasing resentment, coupled with a desire to prove his theories to these obtuse worthies in some striking and dramatic fashion. Like most youths, he indulged in elaborate day-dreams of revenge, triumph, and final magnanimous forgiveness.

    • 2 years ago

      it's really easy to miss. she gives the expo, then there are a few shots before the scene in the throne room where she is identified as Irulan and told to scram by Shadman.
      she says in the info dump that her father is Shadman but doesn't give her name, so it's easy not to connect her appearance in the intro to her 4 seconds in the throne room.
      then you don't see her for 2 hours until the end. and i can't remember if she even has anything to say.
      but sweet mauadib i'd be her consort

        i think her aversion of her gaze is more of an allusion to a kind of reverent air surrounding him, given the fate that awaits him and her full knowledge of the planning of that fate. it's like she couldn't help believe it a bit herself too.

      everyone is far too dry in that film.
      and in the lynch version too;
      If they're not in a stillsuit they should be soaked in sweat,

      it looks like they stepped out of an air conditioned RV on a cold morning and the mother fell in the mud or something, not like they were running/moving through the desert after being shot down or whatever.

      Then there's Zendaya's shitty acting, the shitty choreography; Frank Herbert's idiotic Shields being the thing that basically makes most of the combat in both the book and any attempt to adapt it to film idiotic.

      make that twink glisten! show us some fear! some passion! some fricking blood;

    are those lips natural or are they an early success of plastic surgery?
    The slight asymmetry of her face here, is good.

    as for Dune;
    >Paul Atradies is fricking gay for preferring some bedouin-raised academic-brat.
    Dune is hard to read and frankly boring in most of it;
    Like Most sci-fi and fantasy from the post-ww2 era it's badly written dreck.
    The only good sci fi comes in short story formats written for magazines and newspaper serials;

    1960's sci fi in general is full of what I can only describe as "Horny old men hitting on 14-24 year olds"; but being pretentious about it.

    This is in contrast to the pulp authors of earlier decades where any horniness is tempered by at least some self-awareness that it was ultimately cheap shlock, though frankly a lot of fantasy up into the 1960's also had a lot of weird Yellow Peril and Hillarious-in-Retrospect ideas of "Race Science" when the writers were NEETs and Shut-ins.

    it is puzzling how shes there to deliver exposition and open the story but shes also a character in the story and doesnt introduce herself. I had no idea in the deleted extended version the final confontation with the emperor shes there and you can see her but in the normal cut she seemingly never shows up again. I actually love this movie but this is probably my most glaring flaw with it.
