Shrek 2 is an overrated, boring, unfunny, outdated, visually unappealing and a vapid and manipulative piece of garbage with horrendous characters like Fairy Godmother, the only good thing is puss in boots, the rest is trash, one of the worst Dreamworks/PDI efforts ever.

why was the art style in the puss in boots movie so wildly different from the original movies? I'm having a really hard time imagining death wolf's highly stylized design in any of the shrek films

It doesn't have the two most compelling storytelling elements from the first film : being a subversive fairytale, and the disconnect between what people say they want and what they actually want.

      >no Farquaad, Thelonious, Dragon, Magic Mirror, Robin Hood/Merry Men, Baby Bear/Papa Bear, dialogue from the blind mice, DuLoc, the swamp having animals and an outhouse, onion metaphors, "really really", graphic speeches by Shrek about what ogres do, Fiona's singing or being spunky/resourceful, a frog and snake turned into balloon animals, Shrek in his ogre form next to Fiona in her human form, Shrek watching the stars/showing cooking skills, Shrek not having Fiona in his head all the time, Smash Mouth songs, and Dreamworks' original logo

It lacks the charm from 1. Remember that scene where Shrek/Donkey are leaving the swamp at night and all the evicted fairytale creatures politely wave goodbye to them, and Shrek lifts a dwarf holding a lighted torch, shakes him until he lets go of the torch/falls to ground, and the dwarf then also waves goodbye to Shrek despite his rudeness? This sequel doesn't have those bits of, shall we say, innocence.

This is less enjoyable than the "Welcome to Duloc" and "Merry Men" songs from 1. Why? Because it's sang by the main villain (while she pretends to be nice), not by minor characters like the Clockwork Chorus or Robin Hood and his men.

      ?feature=shared

In the royal dinner scene when Donkey pops out from the kitchen, were the chefs preparing to butcher him? Looks like it.

Unpolished film. Very unpolished. Easy to see why. It didn't have the longest production time, and that specific CG division was also making Madagascar.

What's up with the dinner scene and the La Vida Loca party scene? Many sloppy mistakes in both.

Thank goodness for Tangled and Frozen existing. The industry and perhaps even society needed those films in a post Shrek 2 world. Say what you will about Lasseter, but he did play a big role on making those films possible.

Shrek 2 is a really great film. It does what all good sequels should do and expands on the world of the original without sacrificing its spirit. New additions like Puss in Boots and the Fairy Godmother are stellar standouts. The animation is also phenomenal: lush environments and appealing human characters right before The Incredibles- which I'd argue hasn't aged as well visually. It's not as tonally schizophrenic as other films they've produced like Sinbad or Shark Tale, which suffer from a clear identity crisis and a lack of focus.

People who keep going back to this film are only doing a disservice to themselves. Oh well, it's their choice.
