I liked what Slott was trying to do with her prior to Superior, where he tried to make her the friend that Pete can actually hang out with without the baggage of Harry or the blandness of Randy (sidenote, my least favourite side character in franchise). Wish he (and others) actually stuck to it. Spencer's plot with her was bizarre, but that Spencer for you.

And sure that'd be a neat idea, but betty by her nature already brings a lot of other baggage.
And honestly randy is perfectly fine.
Spencer seemed to do this for a bigger plan with ned (im guessing making him an actual goblin bleh), but it got fricked by editorial. In general his whole run was about fixing stuff, wether it needed to be fixed (MJ, Felicia, Kraven) or not.
