this reminded me of a shitty trip I just went on

It's just a little too realistic. I remember one time going on a roadtrip with my dad and grandma and dad's car radiator overheated so we ended up stuck in some tiny town for the night and then went back home in the morning. Or another time when me and a friend took 2 hours picking up another friend from a busy airport because we were in a new city.
      Funny but also depressing.

I remember when I was really young like 8 we went on a trip to Florida and when we were going back home our car broke down in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana at night. I Was scared shitless at the time.

I live here and I’ve only been to Key West like once or twice in my life. Kne time I tried with my cousins but the traffic on the only road that leads there was going 2mph and was so backed up. We got some key lime pie on the side of the road and turned around. I hate key lime pie.

The only thing I liked about this were the bits with the realistic arguing where they are constantly interrupting each other or talking over one another. So many movies or shows with arguments in them would have them take turns lecturing each other with no interruptions it's too unnatural.

Realistic arguments are insanely difficult to improv. This episode and Uncut Gems are good examples of using overlapping dialogue, shouting down, etc to make a good “argument” scene which helps the anxious tone they’re going for. Its not just monologuing/lecturing like in Family Guy

Why didn't they at least check the prices of other hotels?

Why wouldnt you just wing it?

Thats 100% what i would do. They were only going for a few days. Just roam the streets and explore in the day and stick to the safer areas at night and try to find a room. Frick cancelling a holiday just because you dont have a hotel booked. Thats part of the fun of travelling.

Almost nobody got mugged during the Olympics because the entire country's military police was dispatched to the Rio Olympics zone and touristy areas to make sure the country isn't embarrassed by athletes or tourists falling victim to violent crimes.

yes i understand that there are professional criminals in brazil and all brazilians are sub 90 iq.

But you also have to remember that the olympic robbings were pre-planned as criminals knew there would be a huge influx of tourists, which is not the same as going to rio normally. It was more pickpockets than robbers actually.

And secondly, if you're not an absolute idiot walking around the favelas with your fanny pack out and american flag tee shirt on walking up to gangs of Black person men asking them "parle english?" then you have a much lower chance of being robbed, raped or mamed.

Also, tourist death rates are always smaller than national averages in any country so this has always been a pointless worry, the vast majority of homicide victims in "dangerous" countries are directly related to crime themselves, with a few exceptions like Mexico where kidnapping tourists is a business in itself.

        [...]
whatever cowards. Guess you'd rather get the fricking plane back. You sound like you wouldnt even leave the hotel regardless lol as you're so scared of being murdered for walking outside the airport in rio. Nobody is denying that brazil is dangerous but if you're walking around the non-slum areas in daytime and not provoking anyone you're most likey going to be fine for 2-3 days.

        >attack took place in remote Praia do Sono
        >look guys one tourist was murdered so therefore you'll die too!

homie there are tourists murdered in london. Does it mean im going to be too scared to walk outside there? Get a grip, jesus. Brazil is a shithole. We get it. But you people are scared of your own shadow. There are dozens of vlogging channels where hapless american tourists walk around brazil and even more dangerous countries and are fine.

They didnt do it because the joke is that they go back home, but the logical thing to do is to sit there and book a hotel. You're bound to find a couple rooms, even during Carnaval the hotels arent 100% booked. It would take a while, but you could find one. They didnt even try, but then again, it was for the joke.

You would be more likely be able to find a room in a not so expensive hotel that its in a kinda bad location (as in, far away from the stuff you wanna see) than in a luxurious hotel. And again, they didnt even try, they just assumed every mid hotel would be booked. Im not complaining btw, it makes sense for the episode, but in real life you can just sit there and find one.

Reminds me of visiting the Philippines with a bunch of friends. We flew out to an island without booking a hotel hoping to wing it on 2 seperate occasions. I don't actually know why we didn't book ahead. Both times there was about 6-8 of us
        >First time we were asking around till late when one local said "oh you are Australia? There is an Australian hotel up on the hill. Surly he will help you".
        >We walk all the way up this hill and find it.
        >"Austrian Hotel".
        >close enough.
        >We go in the front gate and it's the most surreal architecture.
        >We find some old Austrian dude in a garage working on his super bike collection.
        >A few of us were into bikes so strike up a conversation.
        >He eventually agrees to let us stay for free cause he admits he doesn't need the money from the business.
        >He rings a fricking handbell at midnight and a bunch of Phillipino house keepers come running to take us to our room.
        >We end up being put in what I can only describe as a wizard tower up the back of the hotel.
        >It's about 6 single rooms but vertically stacked on each other.
        >In the morning in the breakfast hall the Austrian old guy is their with a couple of other fat old Austrians having breakfast and blasting Andre Rieu on the big screen.
That old guy was living the dream. There was also a cat zoo at the hotel.

I liked the episode but it seemed a little too on the nose and became predictable halfway through. Parasocial means you’d feel some connection to Zach. Relatable scenarios does not make your enjoyment of the episode inherently parasocial. Learn what words mean, you ESL redditor. You homosexuals started using that word when Bo Burnham did, so I don’t see how you’re any better than the people you dump on for enjoying things.

The episode relies on member berries?

“Member berries” is criticism for remembering an era or old piece of media and finding it better, because it’s racist or some shit, if you “member” the South Park episode it came from. It’s when the show went from tired and old to full zombie tier, worse than the Simpsons.

Smiling Friends is a TV show.
Oneyplays is different and they don’t just “tell all the same jokes” as something like SuperMega and LameGrumps

They will tell the same jokes if they don't veto Zach's moronations as was the case with this episode. It's clear he wants to turn this into an extension of his random podcast rambles rather than an actual show.

It was a one off episode intended to air on April Fools. I think you’re getting hung up on this because you got all hyped that this show was coming back, or you’re mad that they went to your country to do the funny airport joke instead of lecturing us on the beauty of the local favelas and their epic Latino culture.

They did have the plane crash in the end.

I'm getting hung up on this because it was a bad episode yet parasocials felt the need to defend it because they personally like the creators.
Foster's Home did the same bit already and no it wasn't good either, the difference is that there weren't fangirls defending it.

Good thing this was a one off, and not part of the season. You’ll get your zany adventures, don’t worry.
There you go using that word again. This episode was enjoyable if you’ve seen the other episodes, it’s toned down for a reason, and people don’t have “Zach Hadel” in their minds when thinking about what they enjoyed about the episode.

South park is gay, why would anyone watch that?

You tell me. You brought up the member berries, and misused the phrase too.

Maybe for like one joke in the Halloween episode where they’re eating the forrest demon. I guess it’s a soft reference to the family ripping apart and eating a monkey for dinner.

                >There you go using that word again
First time I used it. It encapsulates perfectly what the problem is with this kind of show where viewers think there's some kind of two-way communication going on. Rick & Morty suffered greatly from this overt self-awareness, they reigned it back in after S3 but the damage was already done, with the "honest" zany adventures also being self-aware and done as a meta response to the negative reception of S3.
I foresee the exact same kind of garbage happening with SF, this kind of meta episode never ever bodes well.

                Anonymous

It’s not a “meta” episode. They don’t break the fourth wall, and everything is spent on the plot. Yes, the joke is that they stay at the airport and go home, but it has nothing to do with “guise, Zach is telling us a message!!”
You don’t have to like the episode, but you seem to hate it moreso because it was made by a couple ecelebs, which is moronic.

                Anonymous

                >They don’t break the fourth wall
Except the usually zany boss has a deadpan bit and the joke is that it's deadpan and out of character.
I'd say only Pim was in character, everyone was extremely passive since the actors had no idea where to take the idea next.

                >you hate it because
I hate it because it's a bad episode and it turned into a discussion about the creators because it's obvious what the motivation is. I've seen anons saying they liked it because everyone was nice and controlled towards Pim and that shows they are great friends except Charlie and Pim were already established as disagreeable characters that have different ideas because that's how you move a fricking plot forward.
They are making the episode an extension of the creators' personalities rather than thinking about it for what it is.

                Anonymous

The joke that he’s deadpan and out of character is not what breaking the fourth wall is. You need to learn what that phrase means, and what parasocial means. That’s the homework I’m assigning you, have it on my desk by tomorrow.
Again, people are going to talk about the creators no matter what the episode is. That doesn’t mean it’s their only reason for liking an episode.

                Anonymous

Meta is not about breaking the fourth wall, it's about self-reference.
This episode is meta because it relies on the self-reference that it's a cartoon episode and tries to break your expectation of that including the advertising surrounding the episode. Stop trying to steer the discussion into some pointless semantical argument to try to "win" it.

The whole episode is them shitting on Pim, though. They don't come off as friends, they come off as coworkers who don't particularly like each other but who are trying to cooperate to salvage a shitty situation. Even Pim continually tries to shirk responsibility.

They dial it back constantly to keep it in that line where they are just stuck in the airport, except they don't do a good job moving the concept forward and constantly refer to the initial struggle of not having the hotel.
It's not bad because it's a bottle episode, it's bad because it's bad at being a bottle episode, they didn't do a good job exploiting and expanding the small concept.

So you’re saying that it sucks because someone might watch this as the first episode and not understand who the boss is?
Yeah nah, that’s dumb. So what if a bunch of Brazilians get tricked because they think this is gonna be some epic 11 minute adventure through their country? Not every episode has to re-establish who their characters are in case you haven’t watched the others. If this is the first episode you’ve seen, and because of that, you don’t understand the Mr. Boss character, then that’s your fault. Furthermore, it’s a small part of the episode.

No, I'm saying it's a bad episode because it's intentionally being a bad episode and it thinks the humor comes from that except it's not funny and it's not executed well, the characters being out of character is part of the bad execution.

                Anonymous

There are plenty of funny and enjoyable bits in the episode. It doesn’t have to follow the premise from the beginning all the way through for it to be that way. If you’re genuinely mad that they didn’t go to Brazil then you might be stupid. The characters designs and conversations all had their moments. You don’t have to like it but I think you’re genuinely mad that this show isn’t The Simpsons.

I've never met a "person" that I would actually qualify as a "person" that listened to podcasts.

Once again, you contrarian Black person, people do like podcasts, otherwise Rogab wouldn’t be so rich.

Normal well adjusted humans don't listen to podcasts, only depressed losers that don't have real friends do, sorry.

You’re arguing on Cinemaphile, so you have no room to talk. Must be enough “depressed losers” that made Rogan and others so rich.

I already knew it was going to be a fakeout bottle episode, I'm mad because the concept of being stuck in an airport was not executed well at all.
I liked the bit with the guy asking for money, yet grasping at a few moments does not make the episode good.

                >You don’t have to like it but I think you’re genuinely mad that this show isn’t The Simpsons.
I'm mad that the show is trying to be a terrible episode of Family Guy. Nothing about this episode was new or interesting.

                >This episode is meta because it relies on the self-reference that it's a cartoon episode and tries to break your expectation of that
Subverting expectations isn't meta. Is the very act of writing a story in such a way to elicit reactions from the audience meta?

                >except they don't do a good job moving the concept forward
Where are they supposed to go with that concept? They exhaust all their options just by being on their phones, which is what anyone with a smartphone would do in that situation. The only thing they really could have done is have extra shit around the airport which would have deviated from the initial premise.

                >it's bad because it's bad at being a bottle episode, they didn't do a good job exploiting and expanding the small concept.
But that's not what a bottle episode is, it's an episode that just puts all the characters in a 'bottle' and lets their personalities carry the show. The concept is just there to have all the characters bounce off one another. You don't explore the ramifications of whatever is keeping them in the bottle any more than you need to start and resolve the story, because that's not the focus. The focus is how the characters react to being in the bottle.

                >Where are they supposed to go with that concept?
Start off by actually taking the personalities into account.
Alan is an OCD control freak so he's immediately takes control of the situation but fails at it and annoys the others.
Pim is sensitive and desperate for approval so he tries to make the gang enjoy the moment but he goes overboard and gets overly excited over staying in an ATM line, to try to make the others smile he buys worthless trinkets but he spends more on them than the expensive hotel would cost.
Charlie leaves the group early and wanders off to the bathroom where he has more funny interactions with weird locals while being paranoid.
Episode ends with Pim "saving" Charlie from some weirdo in the bathroom and that makes up for his mistake.

You don't have to try at all to come up with a better plot since this was as dry as it gets.

That takes their personalities more into account, yes, but that makes them staying at the airport a little pointless. Might as well let them actually go into Brazil at that point.

Again, while I would have enjoyed it slightly more if it came out on April 1st, the episode still stands on its own merits. As a matter of fact, if it did come out on April 1st, the fans would be more guilty of that “friend simulator” shit because they’d be laughing about how epic the “frick you” aspect was and they would focus SPECIFICALLY on Adult Swim pulling a fast one on us.
That’s a factor here, but it’s not why people love it. It’s a fun twist, and does not rely on meta, and it has interactions that were entertaining.

You can see from the background of the restaurant that the sky is getting more orange, to show that the sun is setting and time is passing.
Toward the end of the conversation, though, someone asks for the time and someone else says that it’s three o clock.

Smiling Friends feels like a show the creators got stuck on and have no real intent on expanding upon the premise. Alan is the most obvious example, he's the guy that keeps the office in check and working properly by being an annoying control freak, since he's the home guy he can be expanded to the intel guy during Charlie's and Pim's ground operations but he literally has no role at all past the pilot since they never actually do their job of making others smile. It's all very random and meandering with Charlie and Pim being avatars for the creators which leaves little room for characters with more limited roles.

Why the frick do you moronic contrarian homosexuals lack the ability to understand that this was supposed to be a stupid april fools episode. No shit there are going to be dumb as frick redditors who don't understand that either and defend it because they are... well redditors.

Anyone who thinks this is anything other than some stupid post season thing and takes it this seriously needs to neck themselves.

I think it was late or something.
They did mention Mardi Gras in the episode too, so you could tell that this aired out of season.

      >YOU DONT UNDERSTAND IT WAS SHIT ON PURPOSE BUT I SWEAR IT WOULD BE FUNNY ON ONE SPECIFIC DAY OF THE YEAR I SWEAR

      The Cinemaphile thread was basically
      >oh it really is what we expected
      >out of season april fool's joke lol
      >wow this was boring, bye
      >NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOW DARE YOU NOT UNDERSTAND TEH ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE OF THIS U MAD? LOL U MAD U GOT TROLLED SO HARD THIS WAS GENIUS
And that seems to be the hill the fanboys will die on.

It’s not brilliant, but the people who hate on the episode were absolutely “got” by it. Even if it didn’t air on the day, it’s clear that this off-season episode, that’s not part of season 1 or 2, was meant to be some dumb, fun, low-budget filler. Sorry it’s not your ebin Bojack Horseman.

It being ironic and trying to make the audience the joke doesn't automatically make it good especially since it wasn't executed well and has no merit in itself. Irony is cancer.
Also off-season episodes are often better so that's no excuse either.

They don’t have to be better. You don’t have to like it but you look like a moron who got got if you’re seething about it.

            >animating shit on purpose so you can dab on the poor souls who happened to watch your garbage because "they just don't get it"

It was mid, but post your epic taste for animated shows.

          >dilute your show with intentionally bad garbage that makes fun of you for wasting your time with it
          >lol you just didn't get it
Quite sobering especially since the show has an anti-nihilistic subtext. I don't think people defending this episode are the ones that got it at all.

The joke isn’t on the audience, it’s on the characters for being bickering morons who can’t plan and enjoy their time on vacation.
