Watching OneyPlays explains the jokes before Smiling Friends animated them. Adult Swim was interested in a formal pitch for a Hellbenders show, with Chris and Zach proceeding to give one of the worst pitches ever (according to them), hence why it didn't proceed past that point.
They apparently did all sorts of stupid shit, like badmouth one of the higher-ups while waiting out in the lobby (unaware that said higher-up was waiting out in the same lobby as them), unintentionally wearing the same outfits as their own characters, and refusing to change the show's name when suggested (AS already had a show running at the time with "Hell" in the title).

outside of the other stuff in the post, i think the main reason it didn't get picked up was because the leaked pilot kind of drags. the internet shorts are shorter and allow them to basically just fit the only necessary jokes they needed to make, or let them stop before the plot went on too long with long stretches without a lot of jokes. Hellbenders in the form it was pitched in, just wasn't really a cartoon that needed to go for like 15 minute episodes. That's something you can tell Smiling Friends fixed because they are able to do more episodes that are fast paced jokes or moments that let the episode breathe with a more drawn out bit.

You can't make James do anything cool. Multiple people have tried and he just says some nonsense about time despite being a self-employed guy who barely uploads to his channel.
I just hope that Charlies cynicism and Pim's optimism bounce off each other more next season, with them each tackling their client in their own way. They've basically been in full agreement on everything this season, and even when they're separate, they're working on separate halves of the same plan.
This season hasn't quite had that same spark that made their wandering conversations and arguments so fun to watch

I do think a good chunk of normies default to this way of thinking. I mean, even though I don't like a lot of its real-talk humor it's still more tolerable than anything else I've seen airing. For now I don't mind it getting more seasons because I'm capable of watching it and enjoy most episodes fine. It's also hard to imagine this really getting to a zombie point. I feel like its esoteric moronation makes it a little harder than something like Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, anything else really. Like do people think Beavis and Butthead ever got worse as it went on? The worst case scenario is the humor gets weak which is obviously a sentiment being passed around already but it's mostly stuff that was already meant to be part of the show's identity, even if it's being used more often.
I'm willing to be lenient even though I've complained with the others about the real talk shit multiple times just because this is a currently airing show that I'm still capable of watching.
There's something that really bugs me about the S2 promo art they've been using. It just looks weird, Charlie's proportions especially. Feels like a step down from S1's promo art. I hope SF doesn't follow in Rick and Morty's footsteps by having increasingly lame promo art with each new season.

ahh i've only see people complain about it here. I also disliked the show it the start but after watching the episodes i started liking the mc's. its not a show to be taken seriously, it has its flaws but it doesn't make the show unwatchable and bad. i'm hoping that the last episodes make me giggle more tho. s2 just made me chuckle a lil bit and was more of a "horror" season than comedy.
I found Mr. President and the alien episode to be pretty weak. The lack of consistency this season has been a slight letdown, but we also have a couple of the best episodes in the series with Gwimbly and Brother's Egg.
Lore update: Charlie is either a protestant or a Greek Orthodox. He says he wouldn't break the 6th Commandment when discussing murder.
Personally I hope he's Orthodox, they don't have much rep, got good aesthetic and it even fits with the scene of Charlie wearing a cross in the pool. Don't see a Prot doing that.

hellbenders was chris and zach’s first attempt at making a network show. iirc, adult swim picked it up but it never went anywhere.

Adult Swim was interested in a formal pitch for a Hellbenders show, with Chris and Zach proceeding to give one of the worst pitches ever (according to them), hence why it didn't proceed past that point.
They apparently did all sorts of stupid shit, like badmouth one of the higher-ups while waiting out in the lobby (unaware that said higher-up was waiting out in the same lobby as them), unintentionally wearing the same outfits as their own characters, and refusing to change the show's name when suggested (AS already had a show running at the time with "Hell" in the title).
Basically they acted like immature kids, but sometimes you have to fail miserably to learn.

outside of the other stuff in the post, i think the main reason it didn't get picked up was because the leaked pilot kind of drags. the internet shorts are shorter and allow them to basically just fit the only necessary jokes they needed to make, or let them stop before the plot went on too long with long stretches without a lot of jokes. Hellbenders in the form it was pitched in, just wasn't really a cartoon that needed to go for like 15 minute episodes. That's something you can tell Smiling Friends fixed because they are able to do more episodes that are fast paced jokes or moments that let the episode breathe with a more drawn out bit.

I mean, even though I don't like a lot of its real-talk humor it's still more tolerable than anything else I've seen airing. For now I don't mind it getting more seasons because I'm capable of watching it and enjoy most episodes fine. It's also hard to imagine this really getting to a zombie point. I feel like its esoteric moronation makes it a little harder than something like Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, anything else really. Like do people think Beavis and Butthead ever got worse as it went on? The worst case scenario is the humor gets weak which is obviously a sentiment being passed around already but it's mostly stuff that was already meant to be part of the show's identity, even if it's being used more often.
I'm willing to be lenient even though I've complained with the others about the real talk shit multiple times just because this is a currently airing show that I'm still capable of watching.
There's something that really bugs me about the S2 promo art they've been using. It just looks weird, Charlie's proportions especially. Feels like a step down from S1's promo art. I hope SF doesn't follow in Rick and Morty's footsteps by having increasingly lame promo art with each new season.

I don't understand the appeal of this. I watched S1 to see what the big deal was and I was just bored, it felt like shitty early 00s animations with all the edge toned down and jokes so obvious I could see them coming from a mile away. I've said this from the start.

All I remember about that show is the MC having a raccoon ex-gf, his dad being a midget and the sisters never showing up because the show got cancelled prematurely. How did they sink that ship?
Parker, the creator of the show, made a tumblr post that tldr basically said "Im not homophobic, but your ship isn't happening." and some other things that people found...disagreeable.
It didnt take long for him to delete the post and then abandon tumblr forever and move to twitter.

honestly i don't ship allan and charlie but when is about canon and is a ship i like just for the fun of it i really dont mind how they deal itself in canonicall events, i believe this "nose sucking callback" is more of a joke about the VA's remembering stuff that happened and bringing back just to re-contextualize for a bit. nothing too deep about it is just a joke about "random joke in last season actually became relevant in the present season"

That's my favorites style of comedy for this show, when they do weird absurdist shit and really lean into it
Them reframing it as "yeah it was actually weird in-universe" and making it into like a normal convo where they react how a normal person would react takes the fun out of it
I love when they make this world seem silly and my favorite bits are when characters do weird stuff as if it's normal, I like how it really does feel like they're odd creatures in an odd world, not just metaphors for humans in an odd artstyle

Michael Cusack did a lot of the background work for the pilot and he isn't as technically skilled despite his art being nice

the thing about the pilot though that gives it some charm is the fact that you can clearly see which elements Michael and Zach did themselves. Like elements of their art styles more clearly noticeable in shots. The final show feels a little more unified and singular outside of the obvious mixed media character that pops in.

Im a big fan of frowning friends and charlie dies in S1 and the alien scientist in S2.
I do think S1 has more outstanding "funny" elements to it even in worse episodes while S2 seems a bit less joke filled when it needs to be.

The pilot is the most appealing in terms of looks. The one episode that even comes close to looking that good has to be the Alien episode.
I like how the pilot colours are a little more saturated and they drew Charlie's head shape a little differently
next time they should make the trio kiss each other one after another, the perfect cycle.

ahh i've only see people complain about it here. I also disliked the show it the start but after watching the episodes i started liking the mc's. its not a show to be taken seriously, it has its flaws but it doesn't make the show unwatchable and bad. i'm hoping that the last episodes make me giggle more tho. s2 just made me chuckle a lil bit and was more of a "horror" season than comedy.

I found Mr. President and the alien episode to be pretty weak. The lack of consistency this season has been a slight letdown, but we also have a couple of the best episodes in the series with Gwimbly and Brother's Egg.
