So after all that build-up, Aang gets pushed into a rock and gets his powers back to kick Ozai's ass.

So after all that build-up, Aang gets pushed into a rock and gets his powers back to kick Ozai's ass. What was the point of all the training if Avatar State could just end it like that? This was a very disappointing fight.

    >Start of series: Avatar State barely does anything but big loud short burst
    >End of series: Is able to utilize it effectively rather than just falling into a desperate defense mechanism

      >Start of the series: Climactic win button against mooks for the sake of spectacle
      >End of the series: Anticlimactic win button against the antagonist hyped up for the entire series, further amped up by a once in a century firepower boost
no u, it's one thing for Ozai to desperately go all out and THEN be dominated, it's another to spend 2/3 of the cool final fight with him just running away.

They could have retconned dark avatar on Ozai. But it was because aang was literally scared of Ozai

    >be nickelodeon show
    >can't have your main character straight up kill someone
    >make him take the villain's power instead

Yeah, now it seems it was counterintuitive. But it is a kids show and I think with that in mind it's better if it has a encompassing happy ending.

The real problem with Aang defeating Ozai isn't necessarily that it's an ass-pull - it's a symptom of a larger problem in that Aang lacks crucial depth and a proper transformative arc in ATLA. Compared to his friends, Aang is missing a lot of internalization and self reflection that you'd think he'd be a natural for. The Chosen One + Lost Hero traveling the world is a goldmine for it.

Instead, Katara gets the arc about revenge towards the Fire Nation. Sokka gets the Boy To Man arc. And Zuko gets an arc about his feelings of shame and escaping his abusive home and nation before accepting his responsibility to save it.

What does Aang get? He doesn't even really get a proper role as a Paragon/Flat Character Arc because he doesn't really instill change in others like Wander from WoY or other cartoon paragons. He just...kinda exists. He's flat AND static.

Third season was rushed. But they had time to do that corny flashdance episode for no reason

Give Aang a break, his friends are dead.

there's a chance for growth that they introduce. His allegiance to the Air bender way vs. his duties as the Avatar. i think him having to choose one and stick with it could have been a strong arc for him. Him rejecting the Avatar way and losing his ability to use the other elements may have been a strong direction for the ending.

the avatar state is a doubled edged sword

no it isn't because noone in the series can even hurt him in that state, let alone kill him. Amped Ozai was the 2nd strongest character in the series and he could only run away the entire fight, it has zero drawbacks at any point for Aang and he could have just spammed it in every fight if he wanted to

homie there's an entire arc about how he was nearly killed by Azula while in the Avatar state.

In anon's defense, it's a super fricking hacky moment where he's just conveniently floating slowly upwards, in full view of the enemy, doing absolutely nothing and not responding at all to the situation, which allows her to fire the bolt. There was nothing stopping from already haven taken out the whole room, or dodging blocking or redirecting Azula's attack, or responding in any way, beyond the fact that the plot needed him to lose their so he just exposes himself and allows it to happen.

Deus Ex Rock was a bad offender. Energybending was also bad.

That Aang didn't play rope-a-dope until after Ozai ran out of comet-juice was also bad.

    Overall...pretty bad.

They lost their budget and had to compress the plot of a lot of episodes into very few.
