So I pretty much get Watchmen but I'm confused about this. How is Dan a bad guy?

So I pretty much get Watchmen but I'm confused about this. How is Dan a bad guy? Yeah he's a cuck who gets off to the power fantasy of superheroics but how is that really comparable to like everyone else.

        >good
It's demonstrative of how dismissive they all are of Rorsharch. First off, let's assume Dr Manhattan doesn't stop him: what the frick does Rorsharch do? Does he know how to pilot Dan's state of the art flying contraption, through intense snow, to navigate himself to any mainland, much less North America? The absolute closest he'll get is opening the door and hanging out inside it so he doesn't quite die of hypothermia. Dan and Laurie could've taken all the time they want, he wasn't going to get anywhere and they don't really respect his safety or comfort since he's never respected their's

I think you can say someone is a bad guy and still portray them sympathetically and try to understand them, give them complex inner lives and motivations. Comedian is a bad guy just like Rorshach and Ozy but they are all still written like human beings with depth. Maybe not Ozy.

I think Moore clarified in an interview it was outright rape, but the way the scene's set up in the panels can lead to ambiguity where it looks like the Comedian's either just about to or that he's pulled out and would do it again.

Morally gray, but not outright a bad guy.

He's a pretty terrible person bro, his grey is more in the implication of his regrets and the "none of this matters" mentality biting him in the ass. But Comedian is out and out a monstrous piece of shit who became a hero purely because he realized going after "justified targets" would allow him not just to assault and murder with impunity but be rewarded for it.

Did Rorschach ever do anything morally wrong? All the people he killed are bad, not one he killed didn't get what was coming to them.

Yeah a lot, he steals from his friends, breaks property, assaults people purely on the assumption they're probably a piece of shit. Not that he doesn't also take out genuine pieces of shit along the way but at the end of the day he's just a deluded psycho who believes everyone but imaginary heroes deserve to be washed away in a sea of blood....until it happens.

I mean, Rorscharch is just flat out wrong at times and blunders down false trails because of his ego and biases, so I fricking guarantee you not all of the people he killed had it coming.
There's also that cop he shot in the chest with a grappling hook. And that guy that he scalded in prison for asking for an autograph.

          >asking for his autograph
Did you think he was gonna use that shank to help him cut his salsbury?

That's Jon's implication, but there's no time scale given.
Will the peace dissolve in a millenium? A century? A decade? A year? A month?
How long does the world need to be saved to make the sacrifice worthwhile?
This is the hard question the book wanted people to think about, but people are moronic.

I don't even think it's a matter of that, it just obfuscated the conflict behind another layer. The Ayys are to Humanity what the Ruskies are to America, but the whole comic is about how we're at eachother's throats anyways and the threat of being nuked by Russia just agitates us further. The comic ends with the Frontiersman Editor b***hing about how he has to pretend to like Russians now. Nothing Ends...did even really stop?

Jons implication is that time never ends and human behaviour will not change that drastically over night!

It's not. It makes a selfish, pathetic loser who pointlessly wastes all his money acting like a violent child, but he's not as bad as the rest and he's never treated like he is. He's one of the more relatively normal ones. Just like Silk and Nite Owl 1.

I don't think he is, while Rorschach is sort of like the gross psychologically damaged introvert aspect of Batman, Dan is meant to show how ineffectual and impotent a Batman would be in "the real world" or confronted with real problems etc.

Yeah, Rorscharch is kind of the "obsessed crusader" aspect, the fantasy of the implacable detective, while Nite Owl is the millionaire playboy engaging in a fantasy.

    Exactly.
Just like with EVA, the creator is a self hating freak telling you to quit being a freak yourself.
Put the comic book down and shut the tv off fatty, go get a job, join your local union, get vaccinated, take a shower, get laid, get a clue.

Yes. Rorchach wouldnt be dead, Moloch wouldnt be killed (with a bullet in his head), Dr Manhattan would be on Mars, Nite Owl wouldnt be on the run. We can discuss if Mason/NiteOwl 2 would ne alive.

But he only "gets the girl" in later life when she is on the rebound. He's the slubby guy who wants to be a superhero but when he actually becomes one he seems beholden to the ideas of people around him rather than having strong convictions himself.
