They wore themselves out quickly. I liked the rest of the special however. It's nice seeing the boys hang out and scheme together again.

      Hope:
Such a drastic change in Randy's character causes him to fall and fall hard to the point he has to give up tegridy and return back to just being Stan's geologist dad after the special.

Doompost: Karen Randy becomes a permanent staple of his character going forward

I think Matt and Trey have made it clear that they understand that people hate Randy and his current status quo and that they're keeping it up because they think it's funny that everyone is pissy about it.

is new SP being outdated before it comes out its thing now

It’s even more embarrassing when you consider that the Simpsons actually took a stab at the “Karen” meme before South Park. That’s right. A show that usually is hilariously late on trends was actually faster on acting on the Karen meme than a show that used to be impressively fast on them. Trey is loosing his touch.

South Park has long established though that "Simpsons Did It"

I have a feeling it was spontaneous, like someone just randomly made the connection in the writing room. "oh hey, Randy is an entitled white guy, that's kinda like the Karen meme that exists!" And Trey probably being a bit behind in the times with memes anyway trusts that and decides that's the direction he's gonna take Randy.

The funny thing is that South Park already had their own Karen character (that would be Sheila) but I guess the only adults that matter to Trey nowadays are Randy, Officer Yates, Liane (although she's mostly a plot device just like Sharon), Butters parents, PC Principal and sometimes Garrison and Mackey.

I wonder if trey is stuck in a liberal trap, where the writers room became extremely cringe normie and liberal under trey's nose and now he's too much of a softy to fire and replace these shit employees who have terrible humor and ideas. Not trying to absolve him of being a shit writer himself though, totally possible. But he's got to be listening to some moron telling him Karen jokes are still funny.

                Anonymous

That's just weird because Trey is not a liberal, how would they end up hiring people like that? And besides, I can see Trey being too much of a softie to fire them since he doesn't like conflict, but that's why Matt is there. What's Matt doing? Why doesn't he intervene?
Maybe them doing outdated jokes is a play on the fact that Trey feels like he's too out of the loop to write about current events anymore? Like he's too young to understand kids these days and feels detached from his target audience? I don't fricking know, I can't understand why he would possibly write something so shitty and out of touch.

                >how?
Because it's California. Try finding a professional writer who isn't a fricking liberal.
                >what's Matt doing?
He's not involved in writing, I don't think he's even involved in directing. He claims he's bad at that stuff, he's likely just leaving it up to trey and giving opinions when asked.
If these are the people they're surrounded by 24/7 then they'll eventually start to actually believe that their npc late night talkshow tier drivel is funny. Or they know trying to replace them would just cause more problems than it's worth.

                >He's not involved in writing, I don't think he's even involved in directing.
I know, but in 6 days to air they showed that Trey shows Matt what he's doing to ask for his opinion. Does that not happen anymore?

                Anonymous

Probably not as much as it used to. For season 25 matt was on a vacation skiing for more than half of the episodes. If trey is asking his opinions, it's probably on very specific things or very general things, like okaying a first pass of the script or if a certain idea/gag sounds funny. I don't claim to know anything but I can tell by the content that matt either doesn't care much anymore or he's become just as stunted as trey. I've sensed for decades now that Matt is just letting trey handle all the decisions that arent money related. Why should Matt care anyway? The guy already made it big, there's nothing left to achieve but grandkids.

                >how would they end up hiring people like that?
Most people who work in animation (in the west) tend to lean that way. Where is their studio anyway? The location of it also has an effect on who they hire.

South Park is preachy left wing bullshit now , they use to say both sides were moron and never pick a side, but now they think We [or Me I guess, I don't know your political leaning] are the morons and only We.
Its the reverse of being bigoted, I wish it was fricking bigoted.
what racism? Chef was a respectful character played by a black man.
it was NEVER homophobic, Sparky was S1 frickface.
I guess the Mr Garrison stuff was a little transphobic but it was fricking funny and everything he said was true, go suicide over it if your so upset then troony.
                >I never met a open south park fan who isnt a pedo
Shes got us there though kek

I personally don't see it as Matt and Trey choosing a side, but maybe that's because I have my own bias if we look at the recent special (I believe in global warming so them saying it's real doesn't upset me). From more recent episodes they still like to make fun of overly sensitive liberal attitudes, they had a whole season doing that. Something like "maybe global warming is real" doesn't seem like a particularly extreme political opinion to have, especially in the current day and age. If it seems like they are making fun of the right more often at the moment, it's probably because the right is acting more ridiculous at the moment.

I get the impression that they used to align politically with whatever went against everyone else's shared belief, but they stopped or at least Trey did. He grew soft while growing old (not saying it's a bad thing) and stopped being so hipster about his political views. I don't think he's liberal still but definitely more left leaning than he used to be.

meanwhile, Matt probably made money for himself and for Trey by marrying his wife. She was a Comedy Central executive. They dated for seven years before getting married. I just imagine a situation where no on at CC knows about their relationship, and her giving him privileged info that would help in negotiations with Comedy Central.

Have you seen the SO trailer? Those writers are working damn hard and you can tell they have a real passion for the show unlike Trey these days.
I'd take any SO episode over the recent special any day.

I did see the trailer thats how I knew it was the same day I marked my calendar.
Like SO got soul, I enjoy it a lot, but its not as good as South Park.
South Park is my favorite adult cartoon of all time. And like top 5 even counting kid cartoons.
I see your point on the "recent" part though. SP kinda sucks lately. You take a random SO episode and you take a random SP episode made since Trump bullshit and SO is gonna win most of the time.
But if you take SP's best and pit it VS SO's best then SP is gonna win by leaps and bounds.
Even taking a average of everything SP and put it VS everything SO, SP still wins because it has YEARS of good stuff in its past and the movie!

SO has passion behind it but it don't have my love like SP has my love.

I agree with you on everything you said, they're also very different shows in the end but I think you can tell that south park was an inspiration for it, I know the showrunners of SO love cartoons like south park, the simpsons, invader zim, stuff like that, and it really shows, but of course they're doing their own thing too.
I would say south park and solar opposites are both in my top five cartoons (adult and for kids) too.
I haven't seen a single solar opposites thread on Cinemaphile so I'll just ask you here, what are you looking forward to the most in season 3? I'm very excited.

I can tell the SO team loves what they are doing as well!
Not sure if SO hits top 5 for me but its top 15 for sure. And I watch a lot of cartoons.
                >I haven't seen a single solar opposites thread on Cinemaphile
Lurk more kek I've been in plenty.
                >so I'll just ask you here, what are you looking forward to the most in season 3?
I'm not one of those "OMG the wall should be the WHOOOLE SHOW" gays but I am looking forward to see the conclusion to that enough for it to be the thing I'm looking forward to most.
It is hard to know otherwise what to look foreword to in a show like SO since it is so episodic. The Aliens do more wacky shit is just the plot to every episode and I love that.
Who is your favorite family member? I like Yumyulack best.

                >Lurk more kek I've been in plenty.
Yeah that's fair, I mostly come in the south park ones lately. I did check for a thread when the trailer came out and didn't see any for a while so I gave up looking.
About season 3, I've never liked the wall much, but now that they're mixing it with the aliens plot, I'm excited for it. I think it was detrimental to have them be so separate in the first two seasons, because people either came for the wall or the aliens, and hated the other side. Hopefully now everyone will have something to like in the whole thing.
What I'm looking forward to the most is the episode where they're going to show what the other ships from the intro are up to, that's such a cool concept for an episode. That, and the plot around the pupa. I've read they have stuff planned there, and I'm curious to see.
I think this might be a season with tighter continuity when it comes to the lore, still episodic though.
Yumyulack is awesome, but my favorite is Terry.
I've also watched the other shows both showrunners have worked on, and this one is by far my favorite of theirs. Justin's style of comedy is much more free here than with the strangling grip Dan Harmon had on him.

I hate gays that only like the wall, even if I did like the wall myself. I just think it is a shame not to love the aliens.

They are gonna show what the other ships are up too? Honestly that trailer moved so fast the only thing plot stuff I caught was Pupa has big insides the kids are gonna check out & Korvo is DONE fricking with that dam ship
I don't read much on what creators plans are for a show anymore, Seeing FRICKING PICKLE RICK FUNNIEST SHIT I EVER SEEN for what felt like 20 years before the episode ever released ruined me for checking out extra info.

Roiland's style of comedy is something between high-octane FamilyGuy/BrickleBerry and more structured Futurama. A really decent balanced mix.

I remember seeing some comments of either Trey or Matt responding to certain celebrities they made fun of who were surprisingly fine with their south park portrayal with anger/butthurt.

South Park is preachy left wing bullshit now , they use to say both sides were moron and never pick a side, but now they think We [or Me I guess, I don't know your political leaning] are the morons and only We.

are bigoted but I feel like a lot of dumbasses watch it and feel like their opinions are finally validated. Or extremely impressionable people watch it and form opinions based on surface level viewings. Case and point, Chris Chan. I don’t think it’s Trey’s or Matt’s fault that this happens but still.

I'm assuming we're not including South Park in this. I have seen almost every cartoon posted on Cinemaphile because I'm just that much of an autist, even the super shit ones. But if I had to pick 5 I would rewatch it would be,
      1.Simpsons at it's prime
      2.s2-3 Spongebob
3.First half of S1 Invader Zim
      4.S1 - end of S2A Gravity Falls
      5. ATLA

You can include south park if it happens to be in your top five! You have a bit of a basic taste and love the classics, there's nothing wrong with that, they're classics for a reason. Nice stuff.

Yeah, I've seen the chinese one and the first 2 seasons of the japanese one. I really hate the dub, the voices are so different from the original and the VAs keep adlibbing shitty jokes, but sadly only the first episode was subbed... so I've been going back and forth between the dub and raw versions, even though my japanese is still toddler-level.
I also don't like that they actually connected the shows to the original canon, because everytime Stitch has a touching moment with Yuna I just remember that he's separated from Lilo. I prefer how the manga "Stitch and the Samurai" handled it, just being a full-on AU.

This will be painful. I am really autistic about lists and it's been a long time since I seriously watched cartoons and I not only didnt watch enough I forgot most. Hmn... No I won't do top 10, too hard. Neither put these in order.
Green Eggs N Ham, Roswell Conspiracies>Men In Black, Diabolik, Generator Rex, Monkey Kid, ATLA, Oban Star Racers, Motorcity, Gargoyles, Swat Kats, Beast Wars, ATOM, Ozzy and Drix, Batman/Superman/Spiderman TAS TNAS Beyond Unlimited Spectacular, Juniper Lee, The Mask, Secret Files of the Spy Dogs, Wunschpunsch, Life with Louie/Duck Dodgers/Dan Vs/Boondocks>Cramp Twins/Mao Mao, Wakfu, Kids Next Door, Fillmore, Les Enigmes des Providence, Jim Button/Willy Fog, Kulipari/Redwall/Sandokan, TMNT 2003, Tutenstein, Carmen Sandiego, GI Joe Renegades, Stretch Armstrong, Cleopatra In Space, Legend Quest, Niko and the Sword of Light, Caballeros, Rise of TMNT, Dilbert > The Critic, Venture Bros > Futurama > Simpsons.

I really wanted to like Tron Uprising, but it was far inferior to other cyberpunk shows and spoiling the ending by making it prequel to the movie and making Frodo the main character was too handicapped for me.

I really should rewatch Pirates of Black Water to see if it holds up. Storm Hawks had a great setting, but garbage kiddie writing that made ATLA look good by comparison.
I'm certain I missed a shit ton of other decent ro good shows, but Green Eggs n Ham will always stick in my mind

Green Eggs n Ham while not my favourite kinda genre is objectively the best tv show for feeling like a Dreamworks movie without being constrained to the 90-120 minute format. The writing and directing feels just like a movie, it's not plain water.

I've been binging Bob's Burgers recently because I saw the movie, which on the topic I really, really liked it, the music and animation was really something special imo, and because of that it's been on my mind for the past week or so

I watched that show when it came out and stopped watching around the time Lars turned pink and they introduced that evil tiny blue fairy girl aquamarine or something. My life is a comedy manga!!!

              >I was part of the Wrestling Club.
              >My dad my whole life has been sportive of me being gay saying shit like "Hey I get liking girls, I like girls too haha" even though I tell him I like boys every time.
              >My Cousin told me she slept with girls befor and its ok whatever I like. "I LIKE BOYS!" "Sure but its ok if you like girls." SCREAMING PAIN
              >One girl secretly recorded me changing for gym class and shared it with other girls.

Oh damn, well as a guy I can say that there are a lot out there who are into more tomboyish girls, I see it a lot on this site as well. Some people used to think I was gay as well because I never had a girlfriend, I liked my hair relatively long for men at the time (wouldn't be that long if it was the 80s) and the weirdest one being because I sometimes buttoned my shirt all the way up (???) but in reality this was all just because I am autistic. But I wouldn't give up hope entirely, you never know when you'll meet the right person.

Thank you for saying that but this is a Woman Only thread dick or GTFO.
HA are you kidding my dad used me buttoning up my shirts all the way as a gay thing too!!! I just thought "why are the buttons here if I was not meant to use them all?".
I do understand I have it easy being mistaken for a dyke as a woman. Some man even "get off" on the idea of that I hear.
I know it must be hell the other way around for guys in your situation. I could if I really really really did just want to get sex and not a relationship, I could stand in the street and just yell "HEY WHO WANTS SEX" and have a 50% chance at finding someone to agree. It is more annoying then anything. I'm still young enough I haven't lost hope of finding a nice man who is into me who wants marriage and a family.
I even gave up my short haircut a few years ago in a attempt to get less auto assumptions [It didn't work cashier girls are still winking at me and telling me how good I look] but at least I'm trying something.

Yeah, I mostly had the gay assumptions around high school, luckily when I graduated from that I seemingly haven't had too many assumptions in that regard although that's probably because I went into costume and theatre training after high school so all the guys there were a bit like me.

I used to figure I was fine being single, and to an extent I can still survive as such but I have gotten to that point in my life where my mind wants me to be a father and start a family, because I get all teary eyed and emotional watching media that explores fatherhood and I worry a lot now about never finding someone and being able to have that family before it's too late. Doesn't help I am too autistic to ask girls out or initiate that sort of thing.

Sorry for blogposting though, we can talk about other South Park related things if you want. Like Kyman, I like Kyman as well, and was my first South Park ship (although it was mostly because I found it funny)

                >Like Kyman, I like Kyman as well, and was my first South Park ship

What’s you’re favorite variant of Kyman? Personally I like Cartman going out of his way with little things to piss off Kyle like how he wrote the story in Woodland Critter Christmas but I also like when Cartman literally fricks himself over in the process while Kyle does nothing like when he showed the pictures of him sucking Butters off to the class.

Those are both great episodes, especially Cartman Sucks. I've rewatched that episode many times. I like how they have got themselves stuck in a cycle, thanks to their individual flaws. Cartman always wants to get one up on Kyle and this can vary from crazy shenanigans to petty little shit.

Kyle's flaw is his own pride, he considers Cartman to be an idiot and frequently feels the need to call out Cartman and prove him wrong. But this allows Cartman to have a lot of control over Kyle. When Cartman presents a challenge, such as "Leprechauns are real and if I prove it you have to suck my balls" it would be easy for most people to just say "no that's moronic" and it ends there. But Kyle can't do that, if he refuses to agree to this bet then Cartman will use that as Kyle admitting that Cartman might be right, and that in Cartman's eyes is a victory. So Kyle's pride propels him to agree to play in Cartman's stupid games, and they keep going around and around. It's a very fun dynamic.

Like look how funny Cartman Finds Love and the Aids episode was, they are both 10/10 episodes. They could do another 30 episodes with Kyle and Cartman are gay for each other jokes and I'd laugh my ass off every time.

Now to be fair he is using dating apps, but if he can do it I don't see why anyone who can type as coherently as you can't. That kid can't put 7 words together without showing he isn't normal. Like if it was reversed and my little brother was a little sister I have no doubt it would count as rape.

Yeah, I pretty much share the exact same sentiment in regards to Kyman. I don't really have any other ships I particularly engage in because they don't have the same funny dynamic as Kyman as I outlined here

I know we tend to get carried away with blogposting here but it is nice to have friends you can chat to about this sort of thing. If we ever go ahead and make that discord then that would solve that problem although who knows what else could happen in that godforsaken place.
I am also aspergers, I think my problem is that I want to date someone I could be friends with, but I don't want to ask them out in case it makes things awkward and I spoil the friendship. Which may be a bit hypocritical of me because I am fine if someone I wasn't into asked me out, but I dunno how other people would react. I tend to be a bit self sacrificial at times, where I put my own needs before others.

I have always been fine with Kyle, even his moralgayging because its a necessary thing in order to get the ball rolling on several plots. I had FoxKids instead ... but I think I had Fox too, but I was too stupid as a kid to remember the schedules ... or maybe my Fox was sharing airtime with 2 other channels. I remember Sonic SatAm airing on the live-action movie channels for me, it would air between 6AM-8AM on saturdays only, good luck I do remember waking up to watch fricking Pokemon at 7AM, but it was on another channel I was more familiar with and also DragonBall at 3PM on the same channel.
Right after 11PM my CN channel would switch to black and white movies in English and without subs.
Right after 8PM for I think approximately 7 years my equivalent of the PBS channel would switch to the fricking anime channel. It was hilarious going from watching Arthur and George Shrinks to watching Trigun, YuYuHakusho, Kitty Grade, Blue Gender, non censored Naruto.

Idk who OP is but I had a similar TV schedule minus most of the anime and stuff. After PBS ended it was just documentaries and infomercials. Pokemon was a morning staple, though. PBS, CN, Boomerang, Hub, and whatever VHS tapes and DVDs we had stocked up were what I watched throughout my childhood.

They both try getting advice from Craig and Tweek who don't want to be involved in their bullshit and give snippy answers, conveniently relevant to whatever the worst case scenario is in the mind of the asker, that ends up making them (cartman and/or kyle) more paranoid and desperate with their schemes.

Tweek. That's not even a question. Cartman got his ass beat by Wendy, Tolkien, and got physically intimidated by Butters. He talks big game but can't do shit with his clogged arteries and weak joints from carrying around his fatass.

Not to mention Tweek was the clear winner in TvC, that kid can fight.

Nah what they said was pretty much true, Cartman is a shit fighter whenever he isn't fighting a midget. Meanwhile Tweek actually has shown fighting capabilities and his personality makes him more likely to have the aggression to pull himself through the fight.

          Anonymous

I like Cartman but it's true that he's afraid of physical intimidation. That's why PC Principal and that dog whisperer guy were able to dominate him (PCP just beat him up) and he always cries when Kyle even just slaps him.

Tweek on the other hand seems kind of pacifist but if he unleashes the sperg power it will be too destructive. That's why he wants to play "weak" characters like a healer magical boy with elemental powers.

I know Trey and Matt like to use Randy because people seethe about it but don't they understand that people hate it because they love the show? I'm really frustrated because I generally love this show but any time Randy is featured heavily in an episode the quality tanks, it's like they can't even think of how to use him but they're forcing themselves to anyway just to piss me off, and why? I find it impossible to believe Randy is so fun to write that he could completely overshadow everything else. Why do Matt and Trey hate their fans so much?

      Anonymous

They would probably say 'we're doing all of this because it's funny" but honestly, still being this spiteful at their age, especially towards the people who love their show, is not a good look at all.

      Anonymous

I doubt they're really using him to make people seethe. Because the point of South Park has always been to make people laugh, not seethe. I think they genuinely believe this is funny, and judging by Twittertards many other fans think it's funny too. Remember when The Simpsons movie came out and you thought it was complete shit, but all the plebs seemed to love it? It was because it had Homer doing wacky things, not because it had anything to do with original Simpsons.

Trey is not good at reviewing his own work. Like many creators he's unsure whether something is shit or not, so he has thought something like the WoW episode (fan favorite) was bad before airing. So when some ugly bastard from Paramount+ tells him that the Randy episodes are "so good" because he doesn't care about the value of comedy but only about money, Trey gets mindbroken.

The movie might have some good parts but when you went to see it in theater the plebs didn't really laugh at those parts, however dumb and unfunny shit like "Spiderpig" became extremely popular and the first scene where Homer and Bart are fixing the roof and Homer hurts his eye got laughs from everyone.

Also back when Fox did a poll on why people like The Simpsons, the answer was because of "the pretty colors" and "Homer hitting his head". So that's what Fox wanted more despite the fact some writers wanted to write good quality comedy. Now Trey and Matt used to be more rebellious against execs who had all these dumb ideas how to make more money but they probably are too old to care now and that's why the show is declining.

See, that's what I'm confused about, because I know you're right. I've seen Trey himself say that his goal is never to make people angry, but to be funny. And yet he knows a good portion of the people watching the show is sick and tired of Randy, so what gives? You're telling me he still has not gotten tired of writing for just one character, after more than five years? He still genuinely finds it funny? Why? Has he broken his funny bone in some freak accident? This predates the new deal, he's been pushing Randy for a while now, I can't believe he's surrounded by yesmen to this level, it's heartbreaking to see. He's ruining the legacy of his own show, can't he see that? It used to be known for the cute potty mouthed kids and now it's the Randy and Cartman show. Does he really want to be known as nothing more than an out of touch old man that's way past his prime? I know he has it in him to make good things, I have enjoyed some of the recent south park stuff, which is why this is so baffling to me. I am far from the average person that hasn't liked an episode in 10 seasons, I do like the current show. I just don't get it.

Weirdly enough they haven't used the show now to promote Casa Bonita, which they bought together recently. Unless the Streaming Wars goes into "we will re-build Casa Bonita to save the broship and our childhood home but we need to make shitty content for a streaming service to make that happen" route.

Perhaps Cartman will find a way to make the money back that he lost from the boob job, and as a friendship peace offering he'll buy Casa Bonita and offer co-ownership to the broship.
And now that we have figured out where this is going, I hope they don't change it, because I think this would be pretty sweet.

That was actually what I originally thought this story would aim for. I also thought that maybe they brought back PiPi because PiPi = PP = ParaPlus. But now they did a trailer on Randy being a Karen which has nothing to do with anything so I don't know. I wonder if the trailers are edited by Paramount+ and they just think they can bait the most normie audience with this.

I believe it's Trey that has to pick the clips that will be shown and send them to the people editing it actually, but maybe things have changed since last time he explained it.

I like to think Trey just found himself abbreviating Paramount+ into PP for work related reasons, and then realized the fun double meaning (like how he came up with Fractured But Whole using repetition), and immediately after also realized that south park already has a character named PP, and decided to use him to symbolize Paramount+.

          >I can't believe he's surrounded by yesmen to this level
I can. This is the new standard. This is why we don't get anything worth watching from anyone anymore. There used to be a barrier to entry when you were a writer or an artist or even an executive. You had to know your stuff and be good at what you do. No more though, rampant cronyism and nepotism have all but obliterated any quality control there once was. It inundated the creative market with one monoculture of California liberal. The art sector was a stronghold that lasted longer than most things, but now that it's fallen, it's over. Trey isn't strong willed enough to fight these blood sucking zombies. More based men than him have tried.

No, a merit based system where one proves their abilities is how you get the best fricking writers. Your friends aren't as funny as you think they are. That's a universal rule for everyone.

                Anonymous

No because if you hire on merit you just take from random people nearby which gets you people from California

If you go out of your way to find specific people who are great at it and befriend them so you can convince them to work for you without having to fork out a shit load of money then you get the best written stuff.

I'm not talking about some pissant independent projects anon. I'm talking about the widespread and blatant misconduct in a multi million dollar industry.
If you hire on merit you wouldn't just be looking nearby. You'd be spending the money to look everywhere, because big productions have that money. That is, if it wasn't lining the pockets of executive cronies. We used to have a merit based society and merit based entertainment industry which got us to the world-class status we enjoyed for decades. Then it all concentrated itself in Hollywood and began the slow descent into California hegemony. I remember a time when American films were enjoyed the world over. Now countries prefer their own content, as they should.
Not that any of this matters when we've let our home rot down to the support beams already anyway.

Same here, I feel bad for him, but I also think he was an idiot for accepting the deal. I may not know him but I get the sense he really cares about making good things that people like. I can't help but imagine that he is still working hard, just way in over his head, which showed in a lot of dialogue that he wrote for streaming wars, that's what I thought it was saying anyway. On top of that, it felt extremely rushed, I think it was, and I think Trey is aware but can't do anything about it. It just sucks for everyone involved, him and us. But then again, he wanted the money so bad, this is what happens. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Is he asking for the fans' sympathy? Because I can't give him that for being a greedy frick, even if my heart weeps a little for him. I think it's fair if some people want to call him a sell out.

the problem with calling them movies is that comparisons naturally arise to Bigger Longer and Uncut... imagine comparing THAT big, well structured, coherent and not to mention hilarious kino- to literally ANY of the specials we had so far. even Post Covid, which is hailed as the best one, is only *best* in comparison to the others, not great- it still pales in comparison to BLU

The "movie" thing had been in planning since 2020 when Viacom got new head of adult animation, Grant Gish, who had learned his tricks from Disney. He wanted to make South Park into this cool new brand thing, and it seems like he got what he wanted from Trey and Matt since they agreed to the deal.

                Anonymous

It seems like they didn't know they were going to be making movies before signing the deal, and it would make sense because after Team America they seemed really convinced they didn't want to make movies for a long time. And Trey doesn't seem to be comfortable writing for them either, which explains why he has made so few.
I was very surprised when I heard of a fourteen movies deal coming from a person that barely made a couple of them in his life and especially hated writing the longer plot format of season 20.

I think my biggest problem now that I think about it is that the special doesn't feel very big. This quote says that they won't be movie scale, but they will still be big.

However the streaming wars part 1 feels rather mundane. the craziest thing that happens is Cartman getting fake breasts, which isn't even that crazy because another character has gotten fake breasts before and Kyle and his dad have been through some crazy surgeries they just sorta bounced back from by the next episode. The plot feels like it would just be a regular two parter, a three parter at best. But the ironic part of this is that if you look at some of the three and two parters from the actual show, you get imaginationland, the coon trilogy and pandemic (the craig one) which all managed to feel a lot "bigger" than the streaming wars. Personally, I want to see more stuff like the previously mentioned multi episodes for these specials.

I'll give the streaming wars one thing, it had some neat visuals. The 3D town parts, the dramatic boat scene, all visually new and you wouldn't expect them much in regular episodes. But ultimately these effects are still being spent on a pretty mundane story, so they don't really do much to help increase the scale of things.

                >the special doesn't feel very big
no it doesnt, because its written poorly
sure its teeechnically dragged out to 40+ minutes, which teeechnically makes it a movie, but it manages to do less in that time than an early sp episode managed to cram into 20 min. its the lack of substance, comedy or plots. when you have less to experience, it feels like youre experiencing less.

That is also my problem with it.
If I'm gracefully giving you 40 minutes of my precious time, you should make it worth it.
If south park does a normal shitty episode, I move on and forget about it because it's just one episode and the next might be better.
But when south park has a deal of fourteen (a very finite number, even if big) movies, that are at least 40 minutes long if not more, and I spend that entire time looking at crap, it feels more insulting.
If the special is forty minutes long, it should warrant having that length, it shouldn't just feel like a very stretched regular episode, with regular stakes and regular amount of jokes stretched to fill double the run time.
Of course people get pissed off at that.
Season 25 had episodes that were way better than Streaming Wars part one. It's just really obvious when they don't have any ideas.

My only hope (and maybe cope) is that the streaming wars is Trey venting about the paramount + deal, and that once its over he'll do more original interesting ideas for the rest of the specials. Get all his frustrations about the deal out now with the water allegory, and then he'll sit down and make some mini movies that measure up to the scale he said he was aiming for.

Unless of course part 2 throws us a curveball and somehow is super big and interesting in spite of Karen Randy.

Cartman making up with Liane is going to take up any time that isn't spent resolving the waterpark plot, and Randy will take up the remaining portions of the runtime. Wrapping up these plot points will be dialogue intensive.

                >Cartman making up with Liane
Why? How? Everything was his fault, and he's not exactly the type to recognize his mistakes and apologize. Streaming wars did nothing to bring him closer to that either, just dug him a deeper hole. I struggle to see how it won't feel rushed when mashed with the two other plots.

I just got all of my expectations crushed by the last movie, and now I don't know what to think or expect, if not absolutely nothing. I have put my expectations in hell so hopefully the bar is not still too high for the movie to reach.

Nepotism is the best way to assure you get the best writers but only if you are friends with really funny and clever people

People won't call that nepotism. Yes if you bother looking in select areas and know how to judge you'll find quality writers in specific fandoms you might have never heard of because of how many goddamn writers there are and how hard it is to separate the gems from the shit and then also contact the homosexual writer.
But in the industry nepotism refers to talentless rich douchebags hiring other talentless rich douchebags from SCAD namely. Take note however how very few are being hired compared to 86-2005.

The writers' guild got disbanded in 2008 due to the economic crisis. You won't find people to teach you how to write anymore. You won't find good wages anymore compared to inflation.

Together with the lack of money there's also lack of social experience, a lot of teachers got heavily disrespected and ignored by HR roasties and idiotic young business men allowed HR roasties to treat them that way. (together with the lack of good wages)
Investors, business people, executives don't even communicate with one another anymore and don't even care if they're losing money and talent because of some arrogant leeches.

      Anonymous

remember the fandom rule of homosexuality
gay is the goal, straight is undesirable, bisexuality is just the gateway; no character is ever truly bi
character only shown interest in the opposite sex? "fiiiine, i guueess they can be bi."
character shown ANY interest in the same sex, even if theyre shown equal or more interest in the opposite? "CONFIRMED GAY."
straights arent real and bi people are what you settle for when you dont get the good slice of pie

        Anonymous

this is true for Craig and Tweek too, even if they ARE really in a relationship and attracted to other boys, sure, why not... but theyve both shown interest in girls too, yet everyone including canon goes 'oh i guess theyre gay now' because everyone involved hasnt developed object permanence yet and only remembers the last relationship

this is why you always have a bi character end up in a gay relationship, look at any bisexual chara from most cartoons. sure they like both genders, but if they end up in a st8 relationship, idiots will think theyve been "converted". if they end up in a gay relationship, theyre "officially gay". so its best to appease the morons than anger em, nobody likes tard rage

personally i think future park was a mistake
Matt and Trey said before that they'd never do it and imo it was for good reason, some things just dont need to be known

now the future is "confirmed" and even if they argue its not canon or dubiously canon, its still cemented in peoples minds

people use the things that happened in the future as law and no longer wanna be original, experiment with adult designs, come up with headcanons thatll be contradicted because whats the point? its been "confirmed"

Matt and Trey used to understand that sometimes less information is better
the saddest thing isnt seeing a good thing die
its seeing it go senile and continue to live in the shadow of its former self

          Anonymous

Say what you want about the way having a future timeline impacted the canon, that is fair, but it was still very interesting to watch and decently funny for me, and the scope of it was satisfying.
It explored a new concept that was too big to fit in a single episode, which was what I wanted the specials to do in the first place. To feel more like an event, something that justifies its existence by being more than what you'd get from an episode. It was new and interesting.
          Everything that Randy isn't.

Serialisation ruined Randy's character, starting with Lorde.

Randy prior to serialisation was certainly a wacky dad trope for quite a while, but by the end of it he always came back to being Stan's dad, allowing him moments of being a regular parent. You'd get maybe one or two episodes a season where Randy had a B plot being wacky and it was balanced.

Serialisation opened up new storytelling potentials that could be really good for the show. Changes have meaning, and the status quo isn't god. South Park has always been a show with continuity so it shouldn't be a very drastic change.

But what went wrong with Randy is that they'd give him an episode to be wacky in. Randy becomes Lorde. But now because there is continuity, multiple other episodes in that season also need to include Lorde Randy. He doesn't get to return back to that default state that keeps him balanced. Then, after they were finished with that they made him a PC bro. Then there had to be multiple episodes of him being a PC bro gentrifying the town. This also means that he appears in more episodes a season than he usually appears in, and with little variance since it's an ongoing character change.

All this was just them testing the waters before they made Randy into a weed farmer. Then episode after episode Randy was an obnoxious Weed farmer, and this was even more intrusive since he dragged a main character out of the town to live on the farm. Instead of getting one or two randy episodes in the season, half or more was dedicated to this weed plotline. It had essentially become the new norm.

Tegridy as the new norm thanks to serialisation meant that any comedic potential of Randy being a weed farmer was lost, as it was no longer something unexpected and therefore funny, it was just normal. Randy being a douchebag pothead farmer is just normal for him. And that's a problem, because they keep putting him in things with this tegridy personality, but that personality is just Randy now.

      >Randy prior to serialisation was certainly a wacky dad trope
imo he wasnt- or at least, it didnt count, because everyone was whacky in the town of SP
and thats what made it fun
hell, his wife had crazier moments

now hes JUST the "whacky dad", everyone around him just sights and rolls their eyes at his absurdity including his wife

      every character became an archetype
SP used to break the mold, now it sits in it comfortably and rots

Seasons 1-9ish what you say is true. Many episodes with wacky Randy have the rest of the town also acting wacky. It was after the losing edge in season 9 where Randy started being singled out as the more absurd character. And while the rest of the town could also follow him in being wacky, he was the one spearheading it.

remember the dead fetus lady episode? it was one of those episodes that cemented that- not only is every character whacky.. the whole town is crazy. the whole WORLD is crazy, from france to china and everyone in it are whacky characters and it was fun
now the show tries to be too... logical...ive noticed thats something that happens to cartoons in general. sure, the show may be about supernatural things and illogical events, but theyre approached with a much stricter logic and reason than they wouldve been before. compare something like EEnE- a show set in regular ol suburbia with very little supernatural elements. to a show like Steven Universe- a show set in a magical fantasy world. yes, the latter is more fantastical, but it also tries to be more down to earth in how characters act, respond, and generally how the world works, whereas the former rarely did fantasy and yet the setting was always instance and the events were always out-there. same thing is the case with old vs new park.

no that really doesnt matter. sure, the events in it may get crazy sometimes, but whackyness presents itself in more than just situations. and even then, the situations can be written to be more fun. SP's modern day approach to 'crazy' is just "thing that happens irl... but HARDER."
Karen meme? yes but... do it TO THE EXTREME.
president tweets? make him tweet... EXTRA HARD.
its not the situation thats crazy, its just a normal situation taken to a "crazy" level, not to mention the humor surrounding it and the approach to it doesnt fare up
if the real world really was as crazy as old sp, then new sp wouldve been just as crazy by trying to emulate it, but it isnt, because they conflate their old cartoon craziness with what a wine mom thinks is "craaazy" when her friend Debby drops her wine glass haha wow Debby youre such a card... whats next... pineapple on PIZZA? here let me illustrate how silly it is by drawing you putting pineapple on pizza- but get this, its not pineapple slices, its a whole pineapple tree. The audience expects it from them at this point to parody current events because South Park is known as the show that is made in a week so will cover all the topic shit going on. Its why you get fans commenting "Wow! So much crazy stuff is going on right now, Matt and Trey have so much to work with!"

But since everything is already wacky, them making it wackier is just doing what you said, taking things that are happening irl and just doing them more extreme. If they want to keep appealing to their current audience they have to keep doing this, which sucks for them. Doesn't help that they are getting older and probably have a harder time being consistently funny with fresh new material, its a perfect combination for lackluster feeling new episodes and specials.

south park cemented itself as "the show that did it first"
problem is, that title was incidental. they only did it first because they worked fast and information spread slowly... which meant they only did massive events in an era of fewer news and politics (not to mention doing them better too, but thats just a Skill Issue^tm), and spent the rest of the time doing fun things

now that news spreads fast, political shows are literally not necessary anymore yes thats my actual opinions we live in a hyperpoliticized world and dont need political cartoons anymore frick you, and SP is too focused to "being like SP" as opposed to being itself, it starts approaching what it used to do artificially

yes, maybe technically ,its doing what old south park did. maybe TECHNICALLY, its still rushing to be the first to do every news story like old sp, but now theyre doing it
                1. worse
                2. with intent to emulate the symbol theyve been marked with, as opposed to existing in and of itself
                3. doing so in an era that doesnt need it

ironically south park NEEDS innovation, to be MORE like oldschool southpark

things also get tired quicker, like with memes, they used to last much longer and now they're already overused after a day, so it's harder to stay on top of things

thats why the old writing was so much more timeless, and thats just one of the many reasons why timeless comedy will forever be better than referential comedy
hell, nearly all comedy in modern southpark is referential, there are very few gags or jokes that cant be illustrated thru text alone, its all just written jokes

ive mentioned this before, SP would benefit from a "current event ban"
you cant write anything about a recent event for a month, and you cant use a recent meme for six months. if the ban date passes and its still relevant? congrats, its probably big and relevant enough to write about
no longer relevant or funny? too bad, go write something better

also drop the hurry to pump shit out as quick as possible, their insistence on writing an episode a week beforehand is what actively ruins it, they have no time to work out jokes, no time for coherent structure or plot, certainly not a B or C plot. thats why episodes feel bland, slow and short. nothing happens anymore. hell, this is why parts 2 and 1 of the same special feel disconnected, and plot points get dropped midway, because they literally start writing part 2 long after airing part 1. its their rush to be "current" thats harming them, and also causing them stress in regard to what Trey is complaining about right now with the specials, being the workload. just focus on timeless comedy and dont rush it, maybe toss in a current gag or two if you want to but dont wait till the last moment to figure out what the whole damn episode will be about.

what South Park does is it teaches us how NOT to write.

                Anonymous

Post Covid was literally an example of them finishing writing part 1 and then doddling till they had to write part 2, which is why its incoherent and unrelated

they actually dont plan much ahead, because they expect it to be ruined by le current events. they didnt plan WHAT happened to Butters, but you could tell there was a setup with the tinfoil, him working with Kenny, the fact that Prof. Chaos WEARS TINFOIL. ITS ALL COMING TOGETHER AAAAAAAAA

but then NFTs became a weekly meme so they scrapped it in favor of all those "oh my gawd theY DID LE THING" praise.

Wendy's husband, Cartman's "plan" and the gags about his judaism, so many things felt like they were building off to something and then fell like a wet fart because they changed their mind.

Hell, when they post a sneak peek or trailer? you know the special isnt actually even finished yet. they post those BEFORE theyre done, and plenty of stuff is still up in the air, they just post whatever clips they already have finished.

aaand theres our problem- M&T, mostly Trey, no longer do anything organically
they do what people expect of them
their workflow goes thru a secondary filter of what people think south park is, and by extension they themselves began working by asking themselves "what would south park do? whats expected of us?" as opposed to trying to write the best thing they can

south park would benefit so much from experimentation nowadays, but we live in an era of NPCs who want nothing fresh and corporate brands who dont wanna GIVE us anything fresh

this is the problem when you say the old stuff was better, and people perceive it as you being a tightass ninny who cant let go of the past and embrace anything new- but truth is, the old stuff was typically MORE experimental, more crazy, new doesnt always mean fresh, if anything new usually just means bland and shiny and what weve already seen a million times before, but people like it better because its 'newer', because the novelty of it being more modern makes them feel more young and fresh for liking it

Can't you make this argument about Cartman too? From s1-s6, he was an butthole sure (probably the biggest butthole out of them even back then) but so were the other kids, including Stan, Kyle and Kenny. Even after the chili incident, they still ripped on him plenty for being fat (something that's lampshaded in Here Comes The Neighborhood). Then all of a sudden in season 7, and esp in season 8, Cartman is the sole butthole troublemaker in a group full of goody two shoes kids, who usually just roll their eyes at Cartman's antics. For eg: In The Poor Kid, the joke was that Cartman was arbitrarily freaking out over the fact that he's the poorest kid at school after Kenny moved away because he's so muh evil and can't comprehend the concept of "good" and "morality" that he thinks Kyle and the other kids are gonna start ripping on him like he did to Kenny. Say if this episode came out in the early seasons, Stan and Kyle would prob be the first ones to point out to him that he's the poorest kid now, so they're gonna start ripping on him for being poor (would prob say something along the lines of "Hey Cartman you're both fat AND poor now").

          https://i.imgur.com/z5afUbW.jpg

          Not most of them

          >His only punchline is "How terrible can we make this dude"
That's what they've been doing with Cartman as well since S7. Early seasons Cartman still had more interesting traits to him than just being an butthole. In the later seasons, any ep that isn't politically charged is just "Eric Cartman sucks: And Kyle is gonna keep pointing that out throughout the entire episode" the show.

Lets try to get creative instead of just doomposting. How about we try working out how the first part of the special could be better.

The challenge is you have to keep the same general plotline so things end up in the same place. There needs to be the water shortage, the streaming services, etc. However it doesn't have to be say Randy with Tegridy involved, and things can be structured differently and new jokes added in.

HARD MODE: you do still have to include Randy as apart of the story.

literally just write more jokes man, i expected so many jokes, even small gags
like when PiPi offered the guy some pool water i expected him to swirl it around like its whiskey, give it a sniff, go "oooh thats good stuff. chlorinated, I can detect traces of pee and bandaid water."

hows this for another challenge: take any scene from the special and try and make jokes with it.

          Anonymous

I have a feeling they are running out of jokes. Matt and Trey that is, or maybe just Trey, a comedy shortage. They've been doing this for so many years they may have already used up their best material. So instead of being able to fill an episode with joke after joke they just try to come up with a few jokes they can stretch out and then fill the rest of the episode with minor visual gags.

a good comedian doesnt "run out"- just like a good artist doesnt "run out" of good paintings in their lifetime, they produce them, they invent them and they put them into use. everyone has bad ones, sure, not every creation is a masterpiece, but a coherent downslide is a bad sign, because a good creator doesnt just "run out".

              Anonymous

I dunno, there are many artists and creators who were known for making great stuff and then sort of just making mediocre to bad stuff after that. Sure, an artist who is really good at painting photorealistic stuff will always have photorealistic stuff and their skill can stay consistent with practice, but it is different for creating original works, such as stories or jokes or emotional artwork. Writing comedy is actually very hard to do well, and can be very exhausting coming up with fresh ideas. This is a sentiment Matt and Trey have expressed themselves, between worrying about how the simpsons had already done so much, or how they feel when they could have used certain concepts in episodes in better ways as they've said in commentary, or instead split an episode into two.

I'd have the boys go to the pee water park and Cartman in very revealing bikini, being all melancholic how hard it is when everyone stares at him and treats him like nothing but a pair of boobs. Kyle looks at him and his giant breasts in disbelief and Cartman says "geez Kahl, my eyes are up here".

There is a decent possibility of something like that happening in the next part, since we do see Randy trying to get into the waterpark so maybe the boys themselves go there as well.

I love the scene in Krazy Kripples where Jimmy attempts to climb up on the kitchen chair and both his parents just look away and sip coffee as he struggles for like a minute

Followed by one of his best lines

          Anonymous

every Jimmy line is a great line even if he's saying the same things as the other kids. There's just something about the way his says it, his polite, unimpressed tone and stutter, that juxtaposes his crude language. it also helps that he usually phrases it in a way thats almost polite, like he could tell you to go frick yourself as if hes making a friendly suggestion.

one of the best tho is "W-Wuh-Waddle back to Syria, desert tard." the way Jimmy also doesnt tend to smile AS hes talking, but rather smiles after he's finished, almost like he's too autistic and isn't used to emoting so he only remembers to give his cheeky tard grin after a few seconds and he just looks so proud of himself every time. I love that.

            Anonymous

This is one of the reasons why I find Jimmy so enjoyable to write, he has so many quirks that the normal kids don't. Him smiling only after his finished talking, the stutter, the inability to pronounce things, the repetition of certain phrases like "Very much".
Wait, that sounds like autism symptoms.

              Anonymous

Indeed. Same reason why I enjoy Ze Mole, the british kid, the Hannibal Lector kid, Louie, Nathan. Jimmy however is much more proactive in his speech.

agreed, i love characters with not only fun accents (or in nathan's case, a speech impediment, but its still fun to write out phonetically), but also fun ways of speaking. mole's crazy analogies and crude adult language, pip's silly little bri-ish nonsense talk, and so on...

One thing that irritates me a little about the way Trey writes characterizations is that one side goes completely silent while the other does all the talking, I understand completely, but normally that's why you have at least 2 people writing the script together. Mao MaoXBadgerclops is great especially because 2 of the voice actors are recording at the same time and Parker Simmons is the executive producer so he writes the script and decides what goes inside the dialogue. Only those 2 have that level of bants between each other and that nuance, even keeping errors in and very quirky dialogue exchanges and talking over one another.

KyleXStanXCartman do that as well except for when Trey & Matt want to purposefully let Kyle and Stan go mute while Cartman talks his ass off.

Yeah, I can give you the season code and if you put it in when you select "load season" it should bring up everything I've got set up, which does mean you'll also be able to see all the events and shit I've added. So don't peek if you don't want any spoilers, although I haven't had time to add many new references in. Not that there is much new to reference, since like what do we have since last time, the streaming wars?

As for screenshots, I had trouble with that until someone recommended a feature called "GoFullPage" you can google it easily, basically you can put in a command and it screenshots a whole webpage, then you can save the image, crop it to just the events and then save it in order. I had a separate folder for each game and named the individual images numerically in order so it'd be super easy to select the next one as I posted them.

Thanks for running it for me so I can get a decent night's sleep, hopefully I won't miss the actual game by the time I do wake up.

being small tiny little sprites on the screen, they cant afford to give them too much shine or gradients or massive amounts of detail, so they still end up looking simple and nicely shaped and a little lumpy

There were actually many iterations of it, I think we were trying to create the flag for the ultimate gay south park or something, and it was created around the time the indian guy episode came out which is why it's included there as if it's relevant, iirc, and this is what we settled with, which I'm very fond of. I have a copy saved too and it says it's from 2017. Wish I had saved the earlier iterations too but I guess we don't need them.

So where did his bday come from? I know Stan’s and Kyle’s are Trey’s and Matt’s birthday and Butters birthday is 9/11 for obvious reasons. But why July 1st for Cartman? And why March 22nd for Kenny?

I don't think there was any underlying reason beyond just picking a random day in the year.

I thought it was clever and funny which is surprising seeing how shitty the show got over the years

So im trying to get better at just doodling and making small drawings at a time, and since rn I only really wanna draw south park related stuff to cheer me up about the shitass new special, I wanna make one of those pixiv art dumps that the Japanese fans like to do where they just doodle their favorite scenes or scenarios and label the episode it was from. Idk how to explain it but if you know, you know.

Any suggestions on what to draw? Or just share some of your underrated favorite quotes, scenes, moments, or interactions from an episode you like. Just share little segments of comfy stuff from the show. I'll start with a few examples.

    >Timmy having fun in mspaint (S04E13)

    > the boys sneaking a goat onto a plane to Afghanistan (S05E09)

    >the character mixup jokes in Naughty Ninjas
C: "[catches up to a ninja] Dude, can I talk to you for a minute? Listen, I don't think we should let Kyle be a ninja, okay? He said ninjas were gay. He's probably gonna try and turn it around on me, but that's 'cause Kyle knows I heard him."
K: "you're talking to Kyle right now."
C: "yeah, cool... it's me, Butters."
K: "you're the one who said ninjas were gay. Why do you wanna make this a problem?"
C: "I'm just- I'm just Butters, man. I have problems with lots of things."
B: "Hey Eric, you wanna try sparring with me?"
C: "...Yes I do, Butters. [kicks butters in the nuts and walks away]"

they also did that in the Blaintologist episode, that would be an easy one to doodle

Rape his squishy ass and only stop if he can admit he likes Kyle. Speaking of which, I once read a fun kyman fanfic where they were made to have sex with each other at gunpoint.
