Good guy Jamie was boring and predictable, him going back to Cersei/his house was interesting.
Good guy Jamie is supposed to be the end of the arc. Which is why he should've died in Season 6 or 7 after killing Cersei for blowing up the pope. But they didn't adapt Aegon so they needed to keep Cersei around to drive Dany crazy and that meant keeping Jamie around too.
