Yes, but crime is pretty rare. Everyone has so much material abundance and social programming, including minor eugenics that most forms of crime basically don't exist. The most common crimes are probably minor forms of hooliganism: kids smashing windows and spray painting buildings for the hell of it. You still have the occasional murder or assault, but again, it's pretty damn rare. An earth policeman probably has a lot more in common with a mall security guard by comparison.

Why was he seething about racism that happened like 700 years ago?

To be fair, everyone thinks he's being a spoilsport. He's a bit like those people who give you a hard time for playing a military strategy game because you're roleplaying as guys who committed mass murder.

I was mallin' during Peak Ninja Fever so all the escrima blades and bat'leth looking things were amazing
Batleths are moronic as an actual weapon but looked so cool when you were a kid

Matt Easton did a pretty good video explaining how the Batleth could work. Basically, it's a cultural weapon that makes sense for fighting in armor. There's a few real world weapons that kinda look like it.
Of course a sword or dagger is more practical 99% of the time, and surprise surprise, the Klingons also carry daggers more commonly, with the Batleth being more for rituals and as a status marker.

        >Basically, it's a cultural weapon that makes sense for fighting in armor.
Oh 100% agree. Every martial art has one moronic weapon in it. On earth I think the winner is a Keralan weapon that is a whip sword. Batleths seem ideal for shoving fights, like an ugly bladed scrum.

        >Batleth being more for rituals and as a status marker
It reminds me of one of those trial by combat weapons that were deliberately weird and difficult to use so that no one would have a skill advantage. But the Klingons train with their Batleths all the time so it would be useless for negating skill.

I feel like the batleth makes a great feal of sense for a race that eschews ranged combat and regularly fights in contained spaces, like the corridors of space ships. Youve got pointy bits on both ends and a bladed front so all of your blows can be tight in front of you, and in larger areas you can swing one-handed. They're frick-ass heavy, so it might even work double duty as a breaching tool for those tough-to force bulkhead doors.

past a certain age american black men have an odd tendency to crawl up their own ass and take on this quasi-wiseman/shaman role for who knows what reason (lack of male guidance and a desire to pass on what they know to the other generations maybe?). Normally since they dont really know shit about shit they just become epic bullshitters spouting almost meaningless pseudoprofound shit like katt williams, but Since Avery has a Drama/Jazz background, his particular flavor of it is probably a bit higher quality.

                >past a certain age american black men have an odd tendency to crawl up their own ass and take on this quasi-wiseman/shaman role for who knows what reason
American Blacks were intentionally separated from their cultures and individual nationalities and it is deeply important to the human brain to be tied to some sort of lineage or tradition. When the connection is severed, elderly and prestigious people will spontaneously try to start a new chain for others to link to. American Indians/First Nations people do this a lot too. its a meme for a reason but young black men don't have positive role models for the most part, just obnoxious celebrities, half of whom have entire public personas built around being shocking and annoying and confrontational - and it turns out emulating those behaviors as a young, impressionable man is fricking moronic and counter productive. so you get what you commented on, attempts to become some unwanted father figure for the next generation but because its usually just wealthy, idle narcissists who themselves have done very little introspective self development it just manifests as self serving, pure aestheticism devoid of depth or genuine wisdom all masquerading as some sort of attempt at a community service. it does come from a good place but these people are spoiled washed up celebrities who know literally nothing about what it takes to succeed in life as a normal person and have ridiculous egos.

there is also a big onus in the african american subculture to 'give back' to the community if you are wealthy and successful, especially when you hit later middle age

                >but because its usually just wealthy, idle narcissists who themselves have done very little introspective self development
Oh dude it's way more common than that, it's basically any black man past-middle age, it's just the poorer they are the more full of bullshit they are. Keye and Peele even did a skit about it, they just did a shit job at aging him up.

                >it's just the poorer they are the more full of bullshit they are.
That's true for any culture or race, because in lieu of education, the human brain inserts superstition and bioscience. People want to feel like part of a chain or wave or arc of history that is long and bends toward justice, and if they do not see it before then they will invent that. I do not fault people for that instinct. At its core, it is noble and social.

Much like the Orville, I think it was green lit as a dick and fart comedy and frogboiled everyone into being a scrappy successor to TNG. The Orville started the process midway thru S1 and completed it by mid s2. LD didn't really do it till s4. McMahan lurks here, take it up with him.

                >LD didn't really do it till s4
S2 has some good stuff (I really like the refutation of Discovery/Picard in the episode where Boimler gets the Titan away team to confess they love science and exploration instead of combat), but it really does get better every season. S4 in particular broke my heart with Mariner's real reason for being such a renegade. The Dominion War fricked her up.

S2 has some gems like wej Duj, but it really slides into the multi-genre "some comedy some action some drama" role that TNG filled, around s4.

It should have been Starfleet telling Sisko to make it happen, Sisko going to Garak and Sisko directing Garak every step of the way and not feeling the slightest bit bad about it because they were at war and losing.

Cause they'd been running out of ideas for years already.
Like a third of the Voyager episodes where old rejected plots from TNG adapted to the VOY characters.

I just watched a Voyager episode on H&I tonight that had the same exact plot as a Stargate SG-1 episode.

I am not crazy! I know Dukat was evil! I knew it was 6 gorillion Bajorans. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn't prove it. He – he covered his tracks, he got that idiot in the /trek/ general to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. Those memes! Are you telling me that a fictional villain just happens to do nothing wrong? No! He orchestrated it! Dukat! He's literally space hitler! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own story! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was a bit part on TNG, always the same! Couldn't keep his ships out of the demilitarized zone! But not our Dukat! Couldn't be precious Dukat! Trolling them blind! And he gets to be a fan favorite!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you – you have to stop him! You--

Latent Image is really one of Voyager's best. It's very TNG-y but it's just so masterfully executed.

TNG crew is very experienced and competent, they would've easily btfo the SpaceBlack folk and taken the installation back to the Federation with enough time to space for a Data tries to become more human subplot.

I know I'm screaming into the void here, but I have to say this: the SNW Gorn are the dumbest shit on the fricking planet. Not just canonically, but thematically too. And it's doubly frustrating because you absolutely could use the Gorn as a terrifying force in pre-1st contact Trek without making them xenomorphs. The key is taking some stuff from beta canon, specifically their extreme isolationism and "frick off we're full" attitude to the rest of the galaxy.

    >Rumors start trickling in from unexplored reaches of the Beta Quadrant about a mysterious power called the Gorn Hegemony. Think the Dominion in S2 DS9.
    >They are far off, but they're a significant player. There's accounts of them scouring worlds entirely clean of colonists down to the children.
    >But no one's seen them or knows what they look like. If you encounter a ship in neutral territory they are very terse and blunt, warning everyone to stay out of their territory or they will be destroyed. Other than that they seem totally uncaring of what the galaxy is up to.
    >They don't stop at neutral ports, they don't go to space bars, they barely even leave their territory except to investigate nearby disturbances.
    >Long-range scans across the border are always neutralized by some powerful jamming signals.
    >Have an account of a colonist who said that the Gorn opened with orbital bombardment and ignored all pleas to stop. They let refugee ships escape but followed them to the very edge of Gorn space.
    >When Pike and crew get there, they have a very tense standoff with a Gorn ship that keeps insisting on a single point - stay out.

You could even do the xenomorphs episode, but instead of making it the Gorn, make it a nonsapient species from their homeworld. They're ruthless buttholes because they grew up on a fricking death world, but they're still people instead of monsters.

tldr play into the mystery rather than the horror

The Gorn in the Starfleet Command games work fine, they should just rip that off, though at this point I guess its set in stone.

Well now.. Been seeing youtube shorts and catching some youtube vids of star trek. Didn't understand it when I was younger, but it's got my interest now. Where is a great place to start the series? I know there is more before Patrick Stewart comes along, I believe it's William Shatner who is the main character. Is it worth watching? Is it integral to the plot or is each episode it's own with a few episodes that stretch together? Would like to binge it but where do I start.

There's a ton of series to watch. They're all on paramountplus if you're a paypig, or various piracy sites.
I would recommend TNG season 3 as a good starting place, or just pick ones that look interesting from TOS.

      >TOS (kirk et al)
It's...DIFFERENT than the stuff from the 80s and 90s. Its basically a campy 60s horror show with some sci-fi paramilitary flavor. Start with the later shit and go back to it because it may flavor what you think of the other shows.
      >TNG
Starts kinda rough, the first season feels kinda like a soap opera, but thats because it was a show from the mid-80s using scripts from the late 70s written by guys who were from the 40s. Dont skip the first two seasons because there's some decent shit in there, but it really picks up at season 3. Starts to run out of gas at the end of season 6 but has probably one the best series finales in all of television.
      >DS9
some people hate it, some people like it, but the people that like it hold it up as some of the best trek, and really some of the best television youll ever see. Also takes a bit to get started but once it does you're in for a treat.
      >VOY
when its good its good, when its bad its fricking absurdly bad, but there's more good in there than bad. If you made it this far just watch everything, except the next gen movies because theyre all fricking garbage, with the exception of first contact, which is only SLIGHTLY gatbage.
