Not garbage, just run-of-the-mill sci fi fantasy adventure sloppa with interesting ideas and it was the first of its kind for a wide theatre release. It's the Don Quixote of sci fi films - it came first so everyone praises it as being amazing when it simply had no competition at the time and for years after.

Also interesting that Sith was never mentioned in A New Hope or ESB.

Sith was mentionned in the novelization of the first movie released in 1977, ultra fans already knew that Vader was a Sith since 1977

Ultra fans already knew since 1983 the Emperor was named "Palpatine" because of the novelization of Return of the Jedi

        Anonymous

Actually, Palpatine is named in the SW novelization, too, at least in the early editions. It's in the preface that roughly equates to the opening crawl, a line saying that Senator Palpatine took power in the dying days of the Old Republic..

I know it sounds contrarian but I actually somewhat agree that none of the later Star Wars movies ever managed to live up to New Hope. I still like some of them but the series problem with unengaging b-plots and poor pacing started all the way in the OT and has only been getting worse since.

      Anonymous

      >unengaging b-plots
Wrong, the prequels, mostly only Episode II suffer from this, but the other five are fine. Episode IV does work well as a self contained story and it moves at a serial pace as a result, and the later movies are indeed slower because of world building, but it isn't to their detriment.
Interestingly, the only other movie that doesn't have split plots like Episode IV is Episode I, in both movies we're following our heroes the entire film, even if I is much more drawn out. The cutaways are only to the villains and their plots, in both films. Only the Naboo battle doesn't keep everyone together, and I think everyone agrees that it sucks outside of the duel scenes (no one likes Anakin in space, no one likes the Gungan fight, the Royal Guard mission is fine but gets the least screen time).
And you could even argue that Episode II purposely has too many things going on, if we're to believe it was a method of showing the Jedi's confusion and cloudy vision. Obi-Wan's quest is great, Anakin's bits are meh besides Tatooine, and the Temple scenes are inoffensively short.

frick off, b***h. you don't speak for everyone. Episode 1 was awesome and fans loved the majority of it. The space battle was rad. The Pod Racing was one of the best parts of the movie and make a kickass game enjoyed for years by real fans.

How are people so delusional to believe that the fans old or new hated it when so many games and books followed that sold massively.
Even I played all of those games without knowing about SW or even caring to watch it, they were popular and everyone was on them.

I've always thought ANH was the best one by virtue of being a great self-contained story that works perfectly without any of the other movies.
I really like TESB but it's just the middle of a story with no satisfying conclusion, relying entirely on later movies to tie up the loose ends.
It feels like a movie from an alternative universe where ROTJ was drawn out to be a saga of multiple great movies. We got robbed.

    >Against the Sith is one of the first Star Wars zines. It was created and edited by Nancy Duncan and Tracy Duncan, two sisters who lived in Eugene, Oregon.
    >The zine series contains fanfic, poetry, art, articles, reviews, and letters of comment. It ran for nine issues from April 1978 to October 1980.
    >From a 1979 ad in The Clipper Trade Ship #24: "A fanzine devoted to STAR WARS: stories, articles, art, serial, and always plenty of surprizes!."
    >The zine's two editors were adamant supporters of the character Luke Skywalker, and were open in their annoyance with the character Leia Organa, something that was reflected in many of the articles and fiction they contributed. Two of those articles were The AtS Virtue-Chart of Heroic Characters and A Royal Pain which were published in issue #9.
    >In May 1980, the Duncans also wrote the Open Letter to Star Wars Fans by the Duncans which was distributed very shortly after the sisters saw the much-anticipated movie, The Empire Strikes Back, for the first time. In the letter, they asked fans to boycott the movie, and they demanded that George Lucas destroy all copies of the film. [note 1] They also insisted that issue #7 would be the last issue of ATS, and that anyone who had already ordered #8 would get a refund. They did, however, produce two more issues. The Duncans' dissatisfaction with the movie was also the subject of the October 1980 essay, The Death of Star Wars, published in "Against the Sith" #9.
tldr: two delusional women known for running a star wars fanfiction magazine get so assmad that ESB didnt fit their fanfiction setting that they demand george lucas destroy all copies of the film. when this obviously didnt happen they shut their publishing down out of protest and no one cared.

        >"Look, fans claimed ESB was bad!" (and point to the same forgotten critic or same fanzine and deliberately ignore everything else)
        >"The Sequels will get highly regarded in the future!" (ignoring that the media establishment shat on the Prequels and blindly praised the Sequels and created contrarian pushbacks for both)
        >"Star Wars was always bad!" (the desperation move to shut down discussion)

MGS3 was the video game equivalent of a Reddit soiface. By the time MGS2 came out, "fans" of Metal Gear had already dug their heels in and demanded to be fed the same slop over and over again, which is basically what MGS3 gave them.

MM was the start of the "zelda cycle" where a game is hated at launch, then becomes appreciated as a great game when the next major title comes out. It ended with Skyward Sword, because no one could fricking defend Skyward Sword.

People were mad at MM for being repetitive time travel antics and only kid Link, mad at WW for being cartoony (largely because of the tech demo), mad at TP for the wolf segments, and mad at SS for having the worst controls in the world.
