Dune Part Two is literally another Starship Troopers situation. I get the message the movie was trying to TELL, with its dialogue and the speeches: that Paul is dangerous, the prophecy is fake, figures like Paul are bad, I got all that. But the message the movie SHOWS, with its visuals and its vibes and its music, is that Paul is fricking awesome.

By the time the movie was over I felt completely convinced that Stilgar was right, and that Chani was just a b***h. I left the theater ready to follow the Lisan al Gaib anywhere. Let's go baby, it's jihad time.

Haven't seen DUNC2 yet, but the point of Leto/Paul/Leto's stories is that history and civilizational circumstances sometimes demand action from man and the biggest mistake that figure can make is not going hard enough when the time comes. Trying to paint Paul as bad because "muh dictator bad" is moronic and missed the point.

Death to the Atreides and Glory to House Corrino. I'll pretend your shitskin pig "prophet" is the messiah when you come and nuke every inch of Salusa Secundus into glass.

Stilgar was portrayed like a Q-anon Latino for Trump.

The point of Dune is that abolishing coverture was a mistake, homosexuals are evil, people with blue eyes are superior, prophecy is stupid, and men would rather live in the desert and drink their own piss than go to therepy.

It's kind of the same with Starship Troopers the novel, where the things the humans were doing were portrayed as uncomfortable, but necessary for survival. It was not really even a story about fascism.

the Starship Troopers novel wasn't intended as satire at all, on any level.

Fun fact Dune that was finally published was originally meant to be 3 books. But since no publisher wanted Herbert had it be available as a serial in a magazine. As that started to gain some fandom those 3 books were combined into one

So Dune Messiah was technically supposed to be the 4th book simply to spell out how not a hero Paul really is

Paul is a hero, sorry. Him having doubts or committing bad actions does not detract from his heroism. The reader is supposed to like Paul and Frank Herbert wrote him specifically to be likeable and noble- having the reader ask questions is not the same thing as having thread make condemnations.

the message was never that paul wasn't a hero or 'heroes bad' but rather a cautionary tale in the true sense of the word; throughout Messiah Paul notes how Stilgar has become less of a man as he devotes himself to the worship of Muad'dib, debasing himself into a servile creature.
THAT is what Herbert was warning about; don't put all your faith and your society's power in the hands of one or a few. It was warning about the cult of personality running out of control. People acting on the assumptions of what their lord wanted did the jihad, not paul himself, hence why he was powerless to stop or even direct it.
the entire series post-paul is just a long succession of people abusing their connection to him or his family and committing atrocities 'in his name' or the name of the atreides.

I agree, hero worship and mythologising is a normal development of ideological forces but it ultimately debases the hero and subject. I see this every day among my own and it pathetic how easy it is to get some people to accept and even champion the unthinkable if it was wrapped up in the presentation of cult.

The final instructions of Paul to Stilgar is to spare those who have opposed him and immediately he executes them because he believes it is what Paul wants, or should want. Misc Pot's only defense of his role in genocide later in life was "I never them to kill the children"

The end of 'God-Emperor' pretty much proves every terrible thing Leto II and Paul did was for the greater good, as humanity basically becomes extinction-proof afterwards, be it from AI or Ayylmaos. So Herbert invalidated his own message.

      Anonymous

That was the message. The message is that sometimes a functionally infinitely good payout requires an unfathomable sacrifice, but still a finite one. It’s basically the “Killing millions, to save billions” theme. There’s more nuance to it than that, but that’s the point. Leto II even needs to physically become a monster to even pull it off because Paul couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Probably... Herbert was an agnostic subconsciously wrestling with the concept of omniscience and the problem of evil, and Dune was his way having a fun (secular, and deeply flawed) thought experiment. He should've just gone to Mass instead.

Atreides were barely a great house & were fighting an uphill battle against an entrenched adversary.
Fremen had absurd numbers of Saudaukar-tier fighters but no real direction, Bene Gesserit memes kept them idling in the desert rather than seizing Arrakis for themselves. Probably a good thing, with absolute air superiority the great houses would have teamed up to depopulate the planet, desert power or no.
Even combined they still would have lost without having the kwizatz haderach on their side, fricking b***h RMGHM would've seen to that.

Paul rejecting the golden path is what redeems him in the eyes of the reader/audience. He knows exactly what he has to do in order to achieve ultimate victory and fulfil prophecy, but choosing not to do it means his conscience prevails. He makes his "own" choice even if it ruins him, because he would prefer to suffer and banish himself rather than silence that part of his conscience that says killing billions of people and forcing humanity into doing his bidding is wrong.

The claim that the Jihad is necessary to save humanity is an assumption that Paul makes only because he is unaware that in the future they invent a way to make humans invisible from precognition. No-Ships, but also later bloodlines that are invisible.

If all humans are invisible to precognition and you look forward ahead a million years, how many humans do you see? You see zero. You see an extinct humanity. In the end, the ability to see the future really just got a shitton of people killed. The only guarantee that we have that Paul and Leto are RIGHT is their vision, which in the end is revealed to be finite.

Ok so the issue at hand is humanity has become stagnant. Look at the Harkonnen. They are inbred as frick. None of these planets are breeding with each other, their bloodlines are becoming stagnant. Paul is doing a great reset for humanity, he's purifying the bloodline.

Yes, but she’s not entirely wrong. The prophecy is a Bene Gesserit propaganda tool, but it’s not a complete fabrication. It’s vague enough that if someone meets a few prerequisites, all of the rest of the prophecy will fall into place. So rather than being a prophecy it’s more like a statement of fact spoken like a prophecy. “There will come a being from somewhere no one expects with a 300 IQ, and they will do great things. They will also spin around 3 times on a bill top and pet an elephant…this will be your savior.”

I'm convinced either she or her agent had it put in her contract that whenever she's in a movie she has to have X amount of anti white hegemony lines. She's basically an anti-religious renaissance enlightenment figure plopped into the middle of a mounting jihad. It makes no sense in the context of the story and it's glaringly obvious what they're doing with her on a meta level.

The real problem is that the Fremen were dumbed considerably down. In the book the Fremen are taught ecology by the imperial ecologist so they're very much interested in the way the planet functions and they and they alone know the secret of how the spice is created and by what, as well as how to kill them.
In the movie you could just nuke the spice fields, which means the harkonnen must be extra fricking stupid because they could've blackmailed the emperor the whole time and... didn't.

It would never have occurred to the Baron to kill his own golden goose, never. And even if he'd tried to bluff his way to the imperial throne, he'd have zero credibility. Plus the other great houses would have torn him to shreds if he actually went through with it.
Compare to Paul who dgaf about the Empire or the Guild, would be quite happy to spite them all, and if they wanted to come for him afterwards they could frickin bring it.

The messages the movies tries to convey are another failed attempt at Hollywood pushing leftist agenda through material that does not fit their agendas at all. It makes for a shitty story that does not convey the same messages as the original, character motivations and situations that don't make any sense, even through suspension of disbelief and world building mechanisms. ALL the great houses are dangerous, ALL powerful beings are dangerous. The landsrad is full of scheming buttholes, plans within plans. Paul was just the one to drag a bunch out into the open. >And said son got humanity to the golden path
    >And the visions Paul and Leto saw, implied that if Paul didn't take the step towards becoming a ruler, then a much worse threat waits humanity in the future
So uh, this really muddies both the first books "beware of charismatic leaders" message, and the way Denis went all out showing Paul and Jessica as manipulative bad guys. When in reality, they laid the foundation for the golden path, and the alternative to Jihad was worse.

I agree with what you’re saying. I’m team Lisan al Gaib all the way. But at the same time - try to imagine it from Paul’s perspective. To have the blood of billions upon billions unavoidably on your hands is a hell of a burden. It’s a tragic inevitability. It’s a terrible horror vs. a worse terrible horror.

But in the end, I don’t really give a shit about Herbert’s intended message. We can interpret this thing however we want. I haven’t read the books, but I see these Dune films as a story about the tragedy of a necessary evil.

They make him intentionally awesome and worthy of worship but still tell you no, he's bad and such and such so it creates total mindfricking dissonance in the viewer. It’s largely the point of dune as a series as much as Herbert tried to cope about it. Much like the BG and the Lisa al-Gaib story when it’s put in place it doesn’t belong to him anymore and the novels are easily read as a warning that the right path is usually the most difficult. The golden path is only the route through the problems of humanity and it incurred great suffering and the tragedy of Paul and his progeny is that they are the only ones who can see that, I think the film sort of cottons on to that thread and Chani’s role is to accentuate the tragedy of that predicament. How well it came across is debatable but that’s definitely what they were going for imo

They want you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears, to reject what you feel deep down to be right and just. All movies are propaganda, consciously or not. As you grow older, you realize it very plainly. All movies are meant to control the populace in SOME fashion. This is to make strong, righteous, self-sacrificing leaders seem like harbingers of something that is....bad and....uhh....badmmmkay. They want people to live in some insane bubble where war and death are bad and should be avoided at all costs but also allow foreigners to take over your own society and let children mutilate themselves in some kind of sick affirmation of mental delusions that the people mutilating them imbued in them with their insane media.

She's natural, like a real farm girl. I'm from LM so I am biased in that there's a lot of girls like that. I liked the scene with Paul and her in bed, where she's gentle and kind and more like Chani until those girlboss scenes. She's not really beautiful or good looking but it's that primal aspect that will definitely appeal to some people on some level.

Yeah I think you nailed it. I also think she has a tomboyish charm in some of her performances that works for me. I liked her performance in this movie. The girlbossing felt believable enough - it never took me out of the movie.

I agree that people here overblow it. She didn't do it out of some ideological/girlboss/feminist angle, she loved Paul and didn't want to lose him. It's as feminine and traditional as it gets. People here are just idiots peddling narratives that don't stick out of a bias. I say that, even though I mostly hate DUNC.

She's natural, like a real farm girl. I'm from LM so I am biased in that there's a lot of girls like that. I thought she was kinda cute in the first film when I saw it. This time she looked fairly uggo. Not sure if it was all the zendaya caveman posting or if she just genuinely looks bad on the big screen (I watched part 1 on an airplane ride)

I find Florence Pugh really attractive in every outfit except the one where her hair is showing. I think it's very unflattering on her, but her other outfits show off only her face and she's quite pretty.

Consider also that bene gesserit like jessica and irulan can consciously control their pussy muscles so as far as I'm concerned going with her over chani in the movie is an upgrade

Yeah that’s all fair. I can’t explain exactly why I find Zendaya hot - just something in my brain I guess.

Florence Pugh is meh for me but she looked nice in this movie. She’s a good actress.

Rebecca Ferguson is incredibly beautiful always. Lea Seydoux is not far behind.

You like what you like, nothing wrong with that. For what it's worth Zendaya doesn't do anything for me, but I also think Dune is a very bad look on her. I've seen her in interviews and though she looked actually cute in them.

She looks ok from some angles. Depending on how you cherrypick the shots she can look either ugly or hot.

Seeing Jessica take the water of life in IMAX felt like a dream. Trippy asf. The whole movie felt like a dream. I think I'll have to rewatch again. This movie was like ny first time in VR m, it felt too much if you know what I mean. Very overwhelming.

      First one I’ll concede
Second is specifically for the Kwisatz Haderach which would have the ability to transmute the poison
Third is easy, Chani probably a popular name because of the prophecy, bound to be a Chani in the crowd crying at his “death”
Also don’t forget people always just ignore the parts of religion that don’t add up and pick and chose the ones that do.

he wasn't supposed to do any of the latter, all the former were created for the BG's benefit, not the kwisatz haderach. all of the latter are just impressive feats that would bolster any legacy, it's not like they were specifically prophesized. if anything they represent him getting out of control of the bene gesserit and ruining their plans.

trying to do that only ever works on sci-fi autists, and then only because of the author effectively looking at the camera and going "being President of the Universe and being able to see the future and having two hot wives made Paul REALLY sad ;__;".
the power-fantasy is too strong for normal people.

Sci-Fi has always been a tug-of-war match between
      >If it isn't 120% scientific accuracy IT'S SHIT
      and
      >Dude, what if [otherwordly setpieces]!

I think that what most people want when they think of "Sci-Fi' is actually Space Fantasy with elements of scientific plausibility but not so much it makes the story lame.

Most of the popular SF definitely leans more towards the space fantasy. Actual hard SF is very nerdy and niche even in literature.
Most sci-fi fans actually get very upset if you remind them faster-than-light travel is impossible based on science.

          >Actual hard SF is very nerdy and niche even in literature.

Hard SF is like Arthur C. Clarke or Three Body Problem. It's very dense. The first book of Three Body Problem is literally scientists talking in rooms about theories.

Yea, but then there are other extreme of people who go around reminded that
          >Akshually this isn't real Sci-Fi because FTL is impossible
When the story might be focused on something that requires other worlds, like say, xenobiology, or living on other kinds of planets or around different type of stars.
Or people who can't enjoy stuff like Treasure Planet.

"Sci-Fi" is a commercialized term that covers way too wide of a range of works, so it attracts both a lot of people who want to look at cool shit and a lot of people who want to feel smarter than others.
As far as I see it, Sci-Fi stories should have theoretical scientific concepts at the core of story and adhere to contemporary scientific understanding as reasonable it is to do in regards to both the quality of the story and the accuracy of the science.
No one can write perfect Sci-Fi but not everything set in space needs to be Sci-Fi.

Popular sci-fi is literally just space magic.

They're a cultural institution that, like the guild, was able to cement itself as a powerhouse in a stagnant society that loathed change. But where as the guild had a space travel monopoly, the hoes used their reputation and their influence amongst the nobility.
They presented themselves as the best advisors and wives, and because they managed to successfully do so for so long, this opinion became fact.

Because they fit into the universe of its power institutions. They promote themselves as acting in the common good of humanity (and arguably they are) but like the Jesuit order for which inspired their name they are accused of power seeking and political intrigue beyond their scope. They are a semi secret organisation with a lot of legitimacy for their usefulness to the houses of power
