Super Soldiers

Why is the concept of a super soldier so popular across all media? Cinemaphile, Cinemaphile, Cinemaphile, etc all have super soldiers.

Most countries have militaries. Militaries have armies. Without soldiers, you have no army. This has been true for as long as humans have waged war.
Throughout human history, in almost every culture, soldiers were these venerated and celebrated things.
And for much of human history, the idea of super special soldiers who could mow down entire swaths of the enemy's lesser soldiers has been a popular trend.
They used to have super soldiers born from magic or the blessings of the gods.
Now we're a much more science and technology minded species, so we look to genetic manipulation, cybernetic enhancements, fancy powered armor, and even physic potential.
It's a fun speculative story telling element.

And then, of course, you have the actual real life examples. Or rather, lack of examples. Nobody has succeeded in making a super soldier. Our science isn't there and we don't understand how to accomplish it.
But all of the big global government players, especially the U.S. and Russia, sure as shit want to TRY and make super soldiers. It's on their wish list. The Pentagon made a statement a few years ago that they were looking into creating super soldiers via cybernetic enhancements. Then a few months later Covid became wide spread and they haven't mentioned it since.
And if history has shown anything to be an absolute truth, it's that war facilitates scientific progress. Everything gets developed faster when the government has a prolonged war to win.

It's an easier premise to set up and for most people to understand, there would much more likely to be superhumans generated as a result of some kind of government program, so guys like Captain America and John 117 have their backgrounds set up just nicely.

The concept of the super-soldier has been around for a long time. Many of the heroes of ancient Greece (for example: Achilles) were super-soldiers. The concept obviously speaks to something deep in human nature.

A long time ago when men used to be actually man and not that thing we have today, their dream was to be able to defent their family, country and values. So being a soldier in the amry was the fastest way to do it, or to become a cop. So the concept of SUPER SOLDIER is pretty fricking rad if you stop and think what you could do with those who try to strip you of your freedom and rights.

    Estrogen killed it.

The only way to protect your freedom and rights is to strip everyone else's freedom and rights away. There can only be one alpha male. If you aren't the absolute strongest person on the planet, you're nothing. Might makes right.

Super Soldiers like Captain America only really works if it's in a setting without significantly more impressive superhumans and Super Soldiers.

      Anonymous

Not really. He was the first of his kind, and even if he is weaker in some ways to his successors, he still has other benefits that others don't, like sanity and enhanced mental faculties, because what sense would it make to have a super soldier that's bugfrick crazy, or is stronger than an ox but as dumb as one, too? The whole point was to have an army of guys like him, which is something to consider when you compare him to other programs.

The weird thing is that there's been reproductions of SSS that Steve's had that work without the vitarays - the recipients are just as stable as he is (more, arguably, since they haven't had the deterioration storylines he's had).

          Anonymous

I can't recall one where it worked just like the original, because even the closest one had a flaw where its recipients suffered random aneurisms or something, every other reproduction came with a cost of either more power and decreased sanity, or an imbalanced set that enhanced some things but not others, as opposed to the all-around boost from the original formula.

Either way, the original formula gives a good amount of benefits without the fear of it doing something awful like killing its recipient or making them uncontrollable.

He's tried, but Nuke's genuinely brainwashed and mentally unstable on top of all that, so even if he has moments of lucidity, he's just as likely to lapse into "shoot everything" mode.
