From all measurements, it was a success. It's widely agreed that the story was pretty lackluster or all over the place, but if that gets tuned up, it was great everywhere else.

Just about every time a series is brought back for another season it never lives up to the original.
Writers have likely changed their mind on ideas or have had a change in political ideals and end up reworking things.
If it's gone from a Kids cartoon to an adult one, it feels like the writers just go, "Alright time to add some blood and sex" and it feels like their trying to hard.

Aside from the Transylvania Hotel series(pure sony money maker), everything Gendy has worked on is gold.

They're not bad for CG kids movies, though. Much, much better than the sloppy vomit that Disney, Dreamworks, and Illumination produce.
