He chose to be alone and live in filth. In the film you see he has decent money but he chooses to live in a shitty apartment and only roam the streets in the bad parts of town at night. He didn't, he was such an outcast and so clueless that he took a date to a porno because that was all he knew what to do with her. He really tried to win her back and she didn't, and in the face of that rejection he rejected her back. He did yearn for companionship and thought he had found a similar person to him, at least in regards to solitude and "being a sad person". Travis sabotaged himself without meaning to, it was a symptom of his social exclusion.
