I think it's just a losing battle at this point. You have gays like

who are vociferously proud that they grew up on social media and discovered Cinemaphile through it. So their entire context of life is just grabbing shit off twitter to "share" with others in the same way you'd repost something. And there are more of those types of anons than not, these days.

Yeah no. Artists need to decentralize, and people need to know how RSS Feeds work again.

          Anonymous

Artists can't decentralize because the only way to make a living solely on art is through either dumb luck or panhandling, and if they stop chasing the algorithm they'll run out of money and have to get a real job. That's why they're all still on Twitter despite insisting that Elon Musk is worse than Hitler.

Pretty soon art is going to return to just being a hobbyist endeavor with only the truly talented able to make any money off of it because AI will continue to advance but also continue to struggle with capturing the details and nuance that only a human can provide in their art.

            >gamergate
the thing about gamergate is the actual outrage kept being re-ignited by morons repeatedly and incessantly feeding trolls like they were the last hope to stave off troll starvation (not realizing that anyone with much attention on the internet had been dealing with the same shit for decades).

when the true goal of anything that could be called a 'movement' within gamergate (namely, showing that video game journalists were fricking moronic and useless) succeeded, it died down. the actual war was won by gamergate: the blogosphere was dead and dying, video game journalism was seen for the trash that it was. there wasn't any reason for "gamergaters" to keep going, so the only people who did were the trolls.

these days gamergate is their fricking boogeyman not because of the trolls (which they still can't deal with properly), but because they lost the fight (retreating to revisionist and pseudo-intellectual wikipedia article manipulation isn't winning), despite most of the people they hated vitriolically back then moving on. if they'd just moved on themselves, they probably would've recovered by now.

now they try to build a throughline to the modern alt-right with gamergate as the 'source' (hell, sometimes the alt-right tries to help them out, because it's no stranger to stealing credit for any success), largely out of inflated self-importance (gamergate was a fricking flame war against glorified bloggers - THAT'S ALL), but the real throughline is just reactionary buttholes - AKA trolls - who were there before gamergate and will continue to be there as long as they keep fricking feeding them.

gamergate wasn't this seminal cultural moment - it was just some morons with blogs being called morons, some trolls latching onto the shitflinging, and the same trolls latching onto the more reliable source of shitflinging in politics when their current shitfight started dying down prior to 2016.

The Tumblr purge was honestly one of the worst things to happen to the internet for artists. Now, not only are there so many drawings locked behind sites like Patreon, but those sites are at the mercy of credit card companies that can just shut off anything in the blink of an eye. And of course, Tumblr died because the overwhelming majority of users were porn.
I remember when OnlyFans was going to do the same thing, but they realized that that was why people visited the site at all.

Bandwidth is expensive and it's hard to get people to migrate to an unknown platform. Just look at bluesky, threads, mastodon and whatever else people wanted to move to but came crawling back to twitter when they weren't getting enough views. It's also very hard for a new website to make it big on the modern web now that bots will relentlessly spam your platform and DDOS your servers.

Tumblr is still around, bro. The funniest part was how ineffective the porn ban was. Almost immediately after it went into effect, shitty pornbot accounts were back on the site, posting. It literally did nothing but spook artists away.

        Anonymous

The porn bots had the "pass" because of the use of hashtags and being bots, some shit in the algorithm allowed the bot accounts to exist, I remember some guy posted how if he created a normal account and posted the slightest hint of porn he was banned quite fast, but at the same time there were lots of hashtags with "black supremacy" or other shit like that, which was literally porn videos, but those avoided it through the use of fake hashtags

Funny enough, something similar happens for a couple of years in x/twitter, whenever something is trending if you enter the hashtag you will see tons of things that have nothing to do with it (for example some obviously fake metacoin video or links), but that is plagued with 20 different hashtags to avoid being banned immediately.

it was always there. the conflict between it and the neoconservatives just hadn't been lost by the neoconservatives yet, so it wasn't showing up in policy discussions or political campaigning yet. it's biggest boon wasn't from gamergate, it was from the failures in the neoliberal regulatory framework exposed by the financial crisis and anemic response to it.

            >Dont act like it hasnt gotten continuingly worse over the past decade
no, it's just gotten louder and more prominent in the actual politicians as the economically neoliberal conservatives (i.e. the neocons) got pushed out. it was always there - in fact, fascism has always been there. it was the dominance of bipartisan neoliberalism (and later, the delusion) that ignored it and then pretended it was brand-new.

            >it defs indoctrinated
this is the way neoliberals think politics works because they still, despite repeated economic downturns and growing corporatist rot that they have no solutions for (besides returning to their pseudo-scientific religion of "markets" worship), believe that their "we won the cold war" optimism from the 1990s will return, and "neoliberal capitalism" is just "the way the world should work, everyone else is indoctrinated".

failing to realize that people believe things for real, non-imaginary reasons is one of the main reasons Hillary's campaign flubbed what should have been a slam-dunk contest.

gamergate didn't create this political movement, nor did it create these trolls, no matter how much the detrital remains of the blogosphere still haven't gotten over themselves. this was brewing for a lot longer than that, and despite that event being apocalyptic in the eyes of the blogosphere... they were never that important. it wasn't the source, and it wasn't even a watershed moment - it just had some overlap with the troll reactionaries who were always there, just not very loud while the neocons still had control of the only non-libertarian party they tolerated pre-2016.

at no point did i say it didn't grow. i'm just telling you it isn't gamergate that fricking grew it. why is this so difficult for you to understand?

gamergate is less than a blip for the trend we're talking about, because normies were completely isolated from it. the belief that gamergate was what 'seeded' alt-right in normies is almost entirely driven by delusional self-important morons who still haven't gotten over the consequences of making most of their readership angry at them at the same time.

normies didn't get exposed to it until 2016, and gamergate had largely died out as a movement by 2015 (because it was already successful in its actual goals by that point - misunderstanding what those goals were is part of the delusion).

the dying out of that flamewar led to latching onto the next big flamewar, American politics, by the aforementioned reactionaries, and it's only THERE that they get normie exposure and you see the modern alt-right get seeded and grow as the neocons lost control of the GOP and the reactionaries found fertile ground in the "Tea Party" folks - who WELL PREDATE GAMERGATE ENTIRELY AND HAD ALREADY NEARLY TAKEN OVER THE PARTY BEFORE.

modern journalists who believe gamergate was where it started do so because they want the journalists who lost that fight to be more important than they were.

              Anonymous

Gamergate may not have created it but it is the result of the kind of stupid thinking and entitlement entertainment journalism has had since at least the late 00s where a bunch of people seemed to spend their time snarking and virtue signaling over some crap book like Red Hood and the Outlaws or female armor in video games

                Anonymous

gamergate was the result of that - the spread of /misc/ stuff really wasn't. it's largely driven by real-world economic issues, specifically rural.

gamergate successfully exposed that attitude in journalism - that's what i mean by "succeeded in its actual goals" - and largely died out as a 'movement' by very late 2014 to 2015

after that, anyone still using the gamergate label/'community' were either journalists who hadn't gotten over it or the reactionaries who hadn't moved on yet. the 2016 election gave those reactionaries the perfect thing to pivot to, so they did, and they found themselves with very fertile ground in the conservatives dissatisfied with the neocons, which rapidly metastasized into the modern alt-right.

a lot of stuff from pre-2015 was walked back or deleted by people leaving the 'movement/community' to distance themselves from the opportunistic reactionaries infesting the corpse (the war was won, so there was no real reason to stay anyway, nor was there much reason to 'take pride' in the victory - most people just moved on), so the archival record on both the neutral and anti-gamergate side is surprisingly poor.

gamergate fairly early on began obsessively archiving things because journalists would edit or delete them, so the more accurate history - regardless of whether you agree with them or not - was kept on that side.

At least your favorite artists had an account and didn't just dump drawings in random places with no central site or even an archive to speak of.

This alone makes it a b***h to hunt down everything, especially when they post in other circles public and private with no relation to their Cinemaphile presence (for good reason, but it still hurts). Maybe that's what I get for being obsessively nosy
