its been decades and Cinemaphile keeps telling me this is "entry level" stuff and showing me other shows that supposedly top it. Out of the 100's ive watched only 2 Samurai Champloo made by the same fricking guy and LOTGH came close. Bebop is just a masterpiece.

it doesn't have typical anime tropes so maybe it has a longer lasting appeal, or less appeal to weebs

It still does have some typical anime tropes like hot loose women, cool spaceships, deeper meaning, and cute animal mascots. It does have a bit less gratuitous fanservice it seems

It's watanabe's second worst show. Champloo and Kids on the Slope are far better.
      Mushishi is a better show
Detroid Metal City is a better show.
      etc

Bebop's problem is its episodic nature - where 3/4 of the episodes are just filler nonsense where they """homage""" a classic western scifi movie.
When it's good, it's great. but those episodes are few and far between.

Watanabe didn't actually create bebop, he just directed it, the creator was the sunrise team, the same team that made most of the gundam anime from the same time, outlaw star, and over a dozen other sunrise anime that came out around the same time. Now, I would say Bebop definitely stands out as pretty much the best TV anime ever, but if you want really similar anime you could check out some other sunrise anime from that same time, Gundam 08th for example is really aesthetically and thematically similar

    >The cat wasn’t afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily.
    >Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn’t come back to life.

can anyone explain this for a brainlet? I just assumed Spike was talking about himself in this story. Is there more to it or is it just a really shitty story? I guess by finding love (and losing it) the cat can find meaning in life, and finally, peace?

That's basically it. The tiger striped cat let himself die. Spike might disagree with the romantic nature of this story, but he ends up doing the same thing.
Peace was finding the white cat (Julia). Without her, life loses all meaning. Spike only felt alive whenever he was with her anyway.

        Anonymous

Death gives meaning to life. It's why he told Faye that he was going to see if he was truly alive. Yin and Yang-you can't truly have one without the other.

        Anonymous

        It's his story.
Spike was a gangster working for the Syndicate and faked his death to get out and live a free life with Julia (the white cat). While Julia pulls Spike out of the Syndicate, their new happy life together never really materialized and while they are free, she ends up dying in Spike's arms. Then Spike dies shortly after her.

When you watch the classic animés like Bebop you initially think "wow there must be a whole world of fantastic animé out there that's not as widely known". But there isn't. The famous ones like Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Bebop, Evangelion etc really are as good as it gets.

Vampire Hunter D (1985) and Fist of the North Star (1986) are really solid action movies, FOTNS in particular is superbly dubbed and has fantastic sound design.

Also. I have to tell you, if you haven't seen it .. the hype around Neon Genesis Evangelion is justified. It's just the best cartoon ever.

It's pretty good, great animation, but honestly not super meaningful like a lot of the episodes, no real fable, just an action movie plot. Still good though, great aesthetic and direction, better action scenes than the show

this isn't even trad plagiarism anyway, Japan had no licensing framework for western pop music back then, so Kanno makes intentional soundalikes to work as replacements. if they could've licensed the originals (as they now do) they would have.

I was at a bar earlier, and I tried to explain to two homosexualS (not really) this kind of wild feeling inside me of wanting to go out in a bang. Dying for something better.
They didn't get it. They both have kids yet it's like they have nothing worth fighting for.

Then I promptly sperged about Hollywood numales and how they didn't feel like MEN at all. They're pretty boys, that's it. There's no spark behind their eyes. Jack shit.

because bebop was a failure in Japan, the Japs didnt love it at all, and it had to stop airing midway because of some moronic anti violence law. so Sunrise probably thought it was a huge failure

But the whole Bebop team literally saved anime after Bebop.

Shinichirō Watanabe who was the director of Cowboy Bebop also worked on Samurai Champloo and Michiko to Hatchin. And his new work will be Zankyō no Teroru which will be aired in the following weeks.

Masahiko Minami (Producer) of Cowboy Bebop worked on Swords of a Stranger, Vision of Escaflowne and Fullmetal Alchemist and he is now president of BONES as far as I know.

Keiko Nobumoto (Screenplay) worked on Wolf's Rain, Tokyo Godfather's, Macross Plus, Samurai Champloo and Michiko to Hatchin.

Kawamoto Toshihiro (Character Design + Animation) participated in projects such as Wolf's Rain, Towa no Quon, Gosick and Noragami, which aired last season.

          >Yeah Revvy is a legit monster that would probably make the world a better place if she caught a few bullets, but that's probably true for most everyone in Roanapur

That's what makes the vampire twins episodes so good. She is just like them and she sees it yet rock doesn't. She is a straight up serial killer who was a dominatrix and prostitute because she correlates sex with power and abuse of others. Yet Rock tries to save them and never does with her.

The whole japan story line she is waiting for Rock to try to bring her into his old life and save her. He just uses her as a tool for his ambitions.

Wtf are you talking about? Rock tries to drag her up to his level constantly, and she kicks and screams the entire time. The Japan story was about him realizing his home wasn't his home anynore, and Revy for once not being a massive c**t about it

It's also why she hates Fabiola so much. Fabiola went through the same shit and abuse and never gave up her humanity. Even worse for Revy Garcia saves Fabiola and cares for Fabiola in a way Rock doesn't.

I used to go to this little house club that no longer exists in Shinjuku and they had a tiny stage and sometimes they'd put on some light burlesque or pole dance shows and they'd always open with Tank!.

Based. Love how the "story" is rolled up in the action. You don't need to know what happened, but you know immediately who the good guy and the bad guy are in this story.

I played Space Lion in the car once with my mom and bro (who had just watched the show and knew what playlist was on) and they proceeded to laugh and go "wtf is this?" about halfway into the song. My mom's a tasteless pop junkie but I expected better from my brother.

Dropping back into this thread to say that Jet is the real butthole of the story and responsible for the tragic ending to the show.

Through the episodes Jet has shown that he sees himself as a father figure. He's shown to actively try and mould the crew into a kind of surrogate family that's missing from his life.

Yet in the final episode he doesn't put his money where his mouth is. Faye was ready to gear up and go crashing through the ceiling to try an rescue Spike. And Jet should've done the same thing. Regardless of what he felt about Spike's decision. Because that would be the right thing to do for a true friend. Plus, it wasn't like Spike was doing something bad, he was looking to take down a known murderous crime syndicate boss, it's something Jet as an ex cop should've been fully supportive of.

      Anonymous

It's precisely because Jet's a good friend that he releases Spike to find closure and peace. Sure Jet's not happy about it, but Spike's life is not his to control.

It depends on the person and circumstances, but there are things worse than death.

This song means a lot to me. Back in the days of Quake clans and IRC channels being the greatest online communities, knowing how to design web pages and graphics were ultra rare alchemist talents, and anime was truly the pleasure of the elite. Peak culture of anime evolving every year with incredible offerings. Group of online friends from every corner of the globe. Getting into guitar, learning on the Pillows/FLCL songs, buddy naming personal website SpaceLion. Summer days spent driving down the highway, wind in the hair, no rush to go anywhere at all.

There simply isnt a show like Bebop and there never will.

Yes to all of this. I have so much contempt for neo-nu-/a/. I moved to Japan and there's a little pizza shop run by a husband and wife team I go to all the time now and we talk godzilla and anime and they have Cowboy Bebop tracks on their jazz ambiance playlist. Frick Cinemaphile, they can choose to be miserable all they want.

the thing about Cinemaphile is that around 2012 all the oldgays left and new redditors flooded the boards when anime finally became mainstream

Cinemaphile was the best board on Cinemaphile, i will never forget all the threads when TTGL and Code Gayass were airing, it was peak Cinemaphile kino for me
