I was in Japan when this came out.
Surprisingly it wasn't marketed that much there. I was in the countryside so it may have been different in Tokyo, but most of my students hadn't even heard of the movie, I was surprised.

I liked the movie, it was amusing very enjoyable. They did a great job with the pokemon, not making them look like ugly sonic

Kathryn Newton was gorgeous in it and some of the CGI Pokémon were great and awakened some nostalgia but apart from that it was incredibly forgettable

especially the mixed race thing. they're trying to soft push diversity into japanese culture (ethnically homogenous) by way of one of their most valued cultural properties. they do this with all subcultures, the most recent being feminism in native american culture by way of prey.

I think Detective Pikachu came out around the same time so the bug business men seized an opportunity as usual.

As for the movie, I enjoyed it for what it was, even if the MC was a shiny, and thought it was the best way to portray Pokemon in a live action flick. If they just made a live action of the show or games, it'll just look schlocky and terrible tbh.

The action was a letdown, and that brings the entire movie down. How the frick do you make Pokémon, a franchise about battling monsters, and then skimp on the actual fighting?
The movie was just them running away from everything, and Mewtwo didn't do any cool Mewtwo stuff as far as I remember.
Oh, and "I need a hero" didn't play during the final confrontation like I expected from the trailer. Still the 3rd best vidya movie right behind Sonic 1 and 2.

The most disappointing part about the movie was how Mewtwo became a compete jobber.
And not just that, but a jobber to a villain whose actor obviously resented being in the movie.

        >but a jobber to a villain whose actor obviously resented being in the movie
apparently Bill Nighy actually really got into the Pokemon franchise after doing the movie.

Several watched it. For a movie, it's alright, especially compared to the woke garbage that gets praised these days. For a kid's movie, and one based on video games at that, it's actually pretty amazing. Although the plot about how MC and his pikachu were the only human-pokemon intelligible communication was pretty overlooked. This was a world of semi-sentient animals that could only speak their names to humans, which must have been frustrating to everyone, but here's the first boy who can understand his pet and... he's busy with a missing persons case so no time to translate your Digglet

I'll never understand how they dropped the ball with this shit. Pokemon as a franchise is so appropriate to do the whole epic 'blockbuster of a generation' nostalgia infused fare, yet they boxed themselves in to such a weirdly dated conceit. Now there probably won't be a real pokemon movie any time soon because the debut live action vision of the most financially successful franchise of all time (yes actually) felt like the Disney + kids section spin-off of a real movie.

I always wondered what irl shady practices would people do to exploit pokemon. Besides Team Rocket just poaching them. I'd imagine things like asian women making videos of stepping on Meowths and Growlithes with her high heels, or Ditto's being used to satisfy any sexual desires you need.

Ditto quite unironically would fix the world. You can get four fricking ditto ans just duplicate your favorite girl. That's nearly world-peace tier, unless Dittos are really rare and expensive. If everyone has access to free sex of their liking... I can't imagine many reasons to be mad.

And about that, even in the Pokémon world they fricking cut Slowpokes' tails off. They eat tails as a delicacy while the Slowpoke is left alive and bleeding somewhere.

It was okay, but far better than the two Sonic movies that get shilled on Cinemaphile. But that isn't even saying much because Hollywood adaptations of vidya are shit. You're better off watching the 24 animated movies they did, most of them are way more worth watching tbh.

The most disappointing part about the movie was how Mewtwo became a compete jobber.

This, they could just do some of the animated movies in live action and they'd be so much better.

It was cute and family friendly, even if it did promote miscegenation. Just be sure to talk to your kids afterwards about the dangers of the Eternal israelite and his infinite lies, as well as his loyal golem the always violent Black person and how you should never relax around either of them.

Wasn’t this movie pretty successful? Surprised they didn’t jump on making a sequel

It was a pretty decent family film. The Pokemon didn’t look out of place with a more realistic look to them. I was happy to see my homie Ludicolo show up.

I watched it, wasn't even a big pokemon fan. It was pretty good.
They cast an uncharismatic Black person that literally nobody liked and neglected modern fan favorite pokemon to attract kids.
Gengar, Blastoise, Charizard, all have very brief scenes in an underground fighting ring.
Greninja is in for like a minute, Lucario doesn't show up at all.
The only legendary/mythical to actually appear was Mewtwo.
It's like most of the major choices for story, especially in terms of the pokemon, were made by people who watched the first anime and maybe a few of the movies.
You see that some people on production clearly know their shit putting statues of pokemon like Arceus in the background, while 99% of the public had no idea what Arceus even was.
If they had cast a white guy or an asian guy and left the girl journalist out of it and focused more on the actual detective pikachu it would have been so much better, but the seeming lack of enthusiasm and knowledge for pokemon behind the scenes doomed this movie.
