I was in Japan when this came out.
Surprisingly it wasn't marketed that much there. I was in the countryside so it may have been different in Tokyo, but most of my students hadn't even heard of the movie, I was surprised.
I liked the movie, it was amusing very enjoyable. They did a great job with the pokemon, not making them look like ugly sonic
It was pretty good. Charming and fun. Had it been released twenty years ago it would have been my favourite film, but I can still appreciate its quality as an adult.
especially the mixed race thing. they're trying to soft push diversity into japanese culture (ethnically homogenous) by way of one of their most valued cultural properties. they do this with all subcultures, the most recent being feminism in native american culture by way of prey.
I think Detective Pikachu came out around the same time so the bug business men seized an opportunity as usual.
As for the movie, I enjoyed it for what it was, even if the MC was a shiny, and thought it was the best way to portray Pokemon in a live action flick. If they just made a live action of the show or games, it'll just look schlocky and terrible tbh.
The action was a letdown, and that brings the entire movie down. How the frick do you make Pokémon, a franchise about battling monsters, and then skimp on the actual fighting?
The movie was just them running away from everything, and Mewtwo didn't do any cool Mewtwo stuff as far as I remember.
Oh, and "I need a hero" didn't play during the final confrontation like I expected from the trailer. Still the 3rd best vidya movie right behind Sonic 1 and 2.
>How the frick do you make Pokémon, a franchise about battling monsters, and then skimp on the actual fighting?
Probably worried about getting cancelled over comparisons to dog fighting.
The most disappointing part about the movie was how Mewtwo became a compete jobber.
And not just that, but a jobber to a villain whose actor obviously resented being in the movie.
>but a jobber to a villain whose actor obviously resented being in the movie
apparently Bill Nighy actually really got into the Pokemon franchise after doing the movie.
Several watched it. For a movie, it's alright, especially compared to the woke garbage that gets praised these days. For a kid's movie, and one based on video games at that, it's actually pretty amazing. Although the plot about how MC and his pikachu were the only human-pokemon intelligible communication was pretty overlooked. This was a world of semi-sentient animals that could only speak their names to humans, which must have been frustrating to everyone, but here's the first boy who can understand his pet and... he's busy with a missing persons case so no time to translate your Digglet
I'll never understand how they dropped the ball with this shit. Pokemon as a franchise is so appropriate to do the whole epic 'blockbuster of a generation' nostalgia infused fare, yet they boxed themselves in to such a weirdly dated conceit. Now there probably won't be a real pokemon movie any time soon because the debut live action vision of the most financially successful franchise of all time (yes actually) felt like the Disney + kids section spin-off of a real movie.
I always wondered what irl shady practices would people do to exploit pokemon. Besides Team Rocket just poaching them. I'd imagine things like asian women making videos of stepping on Meowths and Growlithes with her high heels, or Ditto's being used to satisfy any sexual desires you need.
Ditto quite unironically would fix the world. You can get four fricking ditto ans just duplicate your favorite girl. That's nearly world-peace tier, unless Dittos are really rare and expensive. If everyone has access to free sex of their liking... I can't imagine many reasons to be mad.
And about that, even in the Pokémon world they fricking cut Slowpokes' tails off. They eat tails as a delicacy while the Slowpoke is left alive and bleeding somewhere.
Why do you assume they leave the slowpoke alive? If I told you cow tongue is a delicacy somewhere would you assume that country is full of living cows bleeding from their mouths as they struggle to eat with no tongues?
>In the pokemon universe there are probably obscure softcore videos of women pouring baby magikarps down their latex suits and popping them while still in the suit
Ew

Happens irl with animals unfortunately, dunno why you find the idea of it happening with fictional animals surprising or shocking.
I almost feel like it'd be the opposite, since Pokemon getting hurt isn't taboo their fetish videos would all be snuff films with Pokemon maiming and injuring humans
It was okay, but far better than the two Sonic movies that get shilled on Cinemaphile. But that isn't even saying much because Hollywood adaptations of vidya are shit. You're better off watching the 24 animated movies they did, most of them are way more worth watching tbh.
The most disappointing part about the movie was how Mewtwo became a compete jobber.
And not just that, but a jobber to a villain whose actor obviously resented being in the movie.
This, they could just do some of the animated movies in live action and they'd be so much better.
Mewtwo 1 and the Deoxys movie would sell like hotcakes, you get some dark stories and tons of destruction
Seems like trailers got 10x the viewing of the actual movie because they displayed all the actual value of the movie, specifically the cgi pokemans and sexy Kathryn Newnan scenes. Worth a torrent if you're blackout drunk and too distracted to care about plot.
It was cute and family friendly, even if it did promote miscegenation. Just be sure to talk to your kids afterwards about the dangers of the Eternal israelite and his infinite lies, as well as his loyal golem the always violent Black person and how you should never relax around either of them.
I saw this film and it was very average. I will never understand people who think this is an example of a good video game movie, probably because I don't know a single human who ever played Detective Pikachu.
So why haven't they done another pokemon movie It's been 3 years and this was a success afaik. Since they were only testing the waters with this whole detective pikachu spinoff surelly it's time for the pokemon cinematic universe
Wasn’t this movie pretty successful? Surprised they didn’t jump on making a sequel
It was a pretty decent family film. The Pokemon didn’t look out of place with a more realistic look to them. I was happy to see my homie Ludicolo show up.
I watched it, wasn't even a big pokemon fan. It was pretty good.
They cast an uncharismatic Black person that literally nobody liked and neglected modern fan favorite pokemon to attract kids.
Gengar, Blastoise, Charizard, all have very brief scenes in an underground fighting ring.
Greninja is in for like a minute, Lucario doesn't show up at all.
The only legendary/mythical to actually appear was Mewtwo.
It's like most of the major choices for story, especially in terms of the pokemon, were made by people who watched the first anime and maybe a few of the movies.
You see that some people on production clearly know their shit putting statues of pokemon like Arceus in the background, while 99% of the public had no idea what Arceus even was.
If they had cast a white guy or an asian guy and left the girl journalist out of it and focused more on the actual detective pikachu it would have been so much better, but the seeming lack of enthusiasm and knowledge for pokemon behind the scenes doomed this movie.
It was pretty cool
Didn't Chris Pratt voice Pikachu
Ryan Reynolds
They are different people?
That's what I said
I saw it when it came to streaming. Yeah it was pretty good.
Were asians confused on why it starred a black person?
Not so much confused as revolted.
I was in Japan when this came out.

Kathryn Newton was gorgeous in it and some of the CGI Pokémon were great and awakened some nostalgia but apart from that it was incredibly forgettable
It was pretty good. Charming and fun. Had it been released twenty years ago it would have been my favourite film, but I can still appreciate its quality as an adult.
Ryan ryenolds voice was annoying to say the least, I did enjoy seeing the crappy 3d Pokémon.
Fricking Magnetons, how do they work
Not only did I watch it, I enjoyed it.
Everyone wanted a normal Pokémon movie, not the talking animal spinoff.
>pikachu with deadpool voice and gay black lead actor
lmfao, what were they thinking?
Ruined by that amerimutt main character
So whats with Justice Smith being pushed as a lead 3 ~2 years ago. Guys not really a good actor and hes always typecasted as the awkward weird gu y
Sounds like a female pornstar name
His agents probably helped secure roles for him, that could have gone to other upcoming actors
>gay
>black-ish
>looks like a zoomer
thats it basically
especially the mixed race thing. they're trying to soft push diversity into japanese culture (ethnically homogenous) by way of one of their most valued cultural properties. they do this with all subcultures, the most recent being feminism in native american culture by way of prey.
His agent and casting directors probably thought they could make bank because people were going to think he was related to Will Smith
He's Will Smith's son. You can get a lot of chances to act if you're connected.
It's good. Lead actor is terrible though.
I thought it was OK but I'm still wondering why they chose some spinoff game as the base for the first high budget live action Pokémon movie
The story was a confused mess but some of the CG was fun
i cant imagine the manchildren who actually enjoyed this crap
this board hyped up this movie as if it was going to gross 10 billion. remember: Cinemaphile is ALWAYS wrong
The protag was an ugly lightskin. It was never going to make that much
The action was a letdown, and that brings the entire movie down. How the frick do you make Pokémon, a franchise about battling monsters, and then skimp on the actual fighting?

Couldn't read two sentences without cringing.
You like woke shit?
Movie of the year when it came out tbqhwy
I'll never understand how they dropped the ball with this shit. For the sequel they should investigate the underground world of Pokemon prostitution.
Made for BMC
Malaysian?
Mewtwo
Mewtwo is smooth though. Is it retractable?
He can will it into existence as needed, such as when cute trainer dicky walks past.
I always wondered what irl shady practices would people do to exploit pokemon. Besides Team Rocket just poaching them. I'd imagine things like asian women making videos of stepping on Meowths and Growlithes with her high heels, or Ditto's being used to satisfy any sexual desires you need.
Machamp slavery
machoke is more popular if we go by fanarts
Ditto quite unironically would fix the world. You can get four fricking ditto ans just duplicate your favorite girl. That's nearly world-peace tier, unless Dittos are really rare and expensive. If everyone has access to free sex of their liking... I can't imagine many reasons to be mad.

I did and it was extremely boring and the Ditto probably gave kids nightmares. It's not badz just definitely sub par for a Pokemon movie.
I watched it, it was fine but nothing spceial.
I saw it in theaters because I had the as-many-movies-as-you-want plan to my theater before CoVid fricked movies.
It was good.
It was funny, and better than sonic
It was simple and fun, even without knowing anything about Pokemon
No. It came out the same time as Avengers Endgame and Aladdin.
It was okay, but far better than the two Sonic movies that get shilled on Cinemaphile. But that isn't even saying much because Hollywood adaptations of vidya are shit. You're better off watching the 24 animated movies they did, most of them are way more worth watching tbh.

Mewtwo 1 and the Deoxys movie would sell like hotcakes, you get some dark stories and tons of destruction
Yeah, it was hilariously bad.
Yeah, I saw it. Took a girl to see that after we went to he ice skating ring. Good times.
Nice
>he took me to the pokemon movie
I took a girl to that movie, she complained why i hadn't held her hand and we broke up shortly afterwards.
lol beta
We fricked before I took her to the movies tho
>let's do a pokemon movie by removing the main attraction of pokemon games
Only good part was the arena. The MC was bad and the plot was mishandled.
I watched for she
Better movie than I expected.
Post your ace
i saw it with my family, it was ok but all the good stuff was in the trailers or promotional material.
One of the worst movies I've seen, but the Pokemon were cute.
>All the comments saying they liked this
Zoom zoom.

Imagine how big it would have been if they cast a white lead.
the only thing i remember about this movie is the climate change line
So why haven't they done another pokemon movie It's been 3 years and this was a success afaik. Since they were only testing the waters with this whole detective pikachu spinoff surelly it's time for the pokemon cinematic universe
>and this was a success afaik.
It wasn't. that said Covid really killed any momentum since no one wanted to take a risk again.
Remember when Cinemaphile thought this would make more money than capeshit lol
Wasn’t this movie pretty successful? Surprised they didn’t jump on making a sequel

Mime scene was great
I do like the obvious twist that Ryan Reynolds has a black son.
It's not fair
