Still a marvelous audience response here at five stars and a 74% definite recommend. Capeshit formula = quips, bathos, adhd editing, collateral damage porn, a sense of shame in taking itself seriously, random non-stop mayhem, characters always come back so death is meaningless, you can't remember a single thing about the movie a week later

Action movie formula = plot, well-written characters so you actually care about them when they're thrown into action scenes, carefully calculated mayhem with deliberate peaks and valleys to draw tension and release, not embarrassed by sincere emotional storytelling, when characters die they fricking die, stands the test of time

Maverick doesn’t look, feel, or sound like a Marvel movie. It looks like a legit, old-school Hollywood action blockbuster, and it’s about goddam time. Some writer out there finally remembered it’s better when the humor grows out of character interactions, not by just lazily making every character their own wannabe comedian.

Infinity war felt a lot more coherent and had a really good ending that felt satisfying.
Endgame was just embarrassing for so many reasons, the terrible and I mean really bad cgi anytime an actor was wearing a helmet that had a visor it was very obvious it was just green screened but the worst was Rhodey kneeling over Ironman as he was dying, his head did not match at all the Warmachine body colour grading or something it felt off very bad.
Ok those parts aside, I can't forgive the movie for being almost 3 hours long and most of the first 1 hour was almost pure exposition, that's not a story at that point it's an infomercial on the Avengers Universe.

Nah. US had planes just as good (F35) but they can't use them for movies cause they are still classified. So they had to use F18 and gave a "movie" reason for it, canyon and cliff had jamming.

          Anonymous

they had to give a reason why they couldnt use f35s to make the main characters seem more vulnerable/ give the bad guys a chance. It worked. Iran having a few spare gen 5 fighters but sucking ass at using them makes sense, and then they have a few f14s laying around that were actually their own not given by russia/china

I saw the movie yesterday. I wouldn't say it was great or bad, it was somewhere in the middle. I'd give it 6/10. I felt stakes were not high enough at all. Final part/fights should have been longer.

What a waste of time and effort. Those wienerpit scenes sucked too. The aerial footage had some impressive flying but my god I thought I’d be seeing some kinda classic and not some boomer schlock. Considering I’d watched Kelley’s Heroes two nights before, it felt like an insult to military filmmaking.
I refuse to see the new one on the principle that I ain’t supporting hollywood blatantly shilling for chinks.

Nah, I’m just disappointed man. I came in expecting something great or at least passable as a war folm but all I got was something that couldn’t even be competent schlock. Frickin’ original Inglorious Bastards was a better war film and that was shot on a shoestring budget with no-name actors by spaghetti Black folk.
And yet the high-budget hollywood film with known actors can’t even match that piece of shit? C’mon man
We’re all entitled to our opinions but I just don’t see the appeal of Top Gun unless you’re 5 and have plane autism like the director. and even then, the planes are BARELY IN THE FRICKING FILM.

            Anonymous

Also Top Gun's budget was only $15 million.

If Maverick is anything like the OG i’ll just save my time and effort and pass on it.
I’ve watched plenty of film, which is why I don’t have the patience for garbage like Top Gun that can’t even be competent schlock.
The budget does explain the lack of actual planes.
But seeing as I was on a war movie kick and my previous viewings the days running up to it had Kelley’s Heroes and a rewatch of Dunkirk, it just paled in comparison in both scope and actor quality.
Its just not my scene and I expected something better. Part of that is on me, a lot of it however boils down to poor filmmaking.

They’re always in the planes in this one. Even when it doesn’t make any sense. When the Admiral wants to talk to Maverick, he jumps in an old F-16 he customized in his spare time and flies alongside Maverick while chewing him out about how the Joint Chiefs are breathing down his neck. The bar scene is set in a hangar with qt waitresses on skates bringing them their drinks like carhops. The piano is in the back of a C-120 and all of them take flight during Rooster’s piano scene while blares out of a monster PA. All of the scenes with Jennifer Connelly are on a boat with Maverick hovering alongside in an F-35B, shouting their heartfelt feelings to one another over the roar of the engine. Even the love scene is between two planes.

                It was pure, unmitigated kino.

            Thing is
            I knew that
but if you could read you’d see I expected it to at least be COMPETENT schlock. But its frankly really really fricking boring. like, shockingly boring.
I like my campy paint by the numbers bullshit as much as the next guy but for that kind of film you need strong actors with good chemistry to dress up the plot and actually make it work. Point Break is an example of this. Keanu Reeves with his valleygirl accent pairs incredibly well with Busey.
Tom Cruise is incapable of acting in Top Gun and the rest of the cast suffers because of his incompetence. Theres some cute scenes of course, but they fall flat when the focal point is an autistic manlet.
again- I wasn’t expecting fricking high art. But man, even as camp it fails.

Nah I lose interest when you make a character driven film but your main character actor can’t fricking emote. Cruise was awful in that movie, and literally anybody else besides that manlet in that role would’ve at least been able to spice up the line delivery and give his fellow actors some kind of personality to play off of.
But nah he just has the 1000 yard autism stare and only has two modes: an autists attempt at self-confidence that translates more to smug dumbfrickery, and what cruise thinks is “sadness”.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie.

Going in, I thought it was just going to be your bog-standard, formulaic propagandashit. The trailers certainly gave that impression, so imagine my surprise when after the condensed mission story in the first 15 minutes, it totally stepped away from Maverick and became something more like a series of vignettes where random seamen would just be going about their days only for Cruise to show up, go balls deep with some ace one-liners, and then just mav the frick out of somebody. The best part was you never knew who it would be - the focus character or some random sailor in their presence. I liked watching them struggle to perform some semblance of a normal shift after having borne witness to such brutal mavvings.

I was on the edge of my seat, trying to guess who was going to get mavved next. And in what way. Absolute kino.

What is this delusion? By day 8 No Way Home had already made 400 million in domestic box office. It also made a billion internationally.

It's not just that another movie beat it but the general trend of capeshit movies and TV shows completely flopping since Endgame finished. Not a single one of the new marvel TV shows didn't do poorly and the only films that have done decently have been Spiderman and Dr Strange. They've had like a 70% flop rate since they finished Endgame. Cape shit is on a noticeable decline. They probably won't stop making them but it's undeniable that they've lost popularity.

Didn't Spider-Man: No Way Home make 1.8 billion dollars (and that too at the height of the omicron bullshit)? No way Top Gun: Maverick made that much money already. Also, Spider-Man: No Way Home was a rare example of a genuinely kino superhero film. Also, the age of capeshit ended with Endgame (but that doesn't mean that financially successful capeshit films were never going to happen ever again after Endgame, just that Endgame marked the true end of the era of capeshit's cinematic dominance). Anyway, is Top Gun: Maverick worth watching? I'm planning to watch Top Gun: Maverick ONLY because of how the Taiwanese flag thing has pissed off China, because frick soulless chinks.

It really is, but Spider-man will be the only capeshit that will still make money unless normies get really sick of it, which can happen considering Sony wants to do multiple Spider-man movies apparently

Regular capeshit is 100% dying, Doctor Strange 2 was supposed to be a mega hit on par with No Way Home and it was a disappointment, the Disney+ shows have been flopping since Hawkeye and the DCEU is already dead
I figured this out shortly before No Way Home came out, that movie gave people so much that it's hard for them to be interested in the actual MCU
