I can't say it entirely from experience because its not like I was an adult in the 90's or before, but it really felt like once you were out of college back then you were basically an adult-adult. 18-26 have been considered young adults (IE lacking in maturity) for much longer than anyone on this board has been alive. Even before the current paradigm they would've just been having kids, or their oldest may have been in the ballpark of 8 years old(contrary to pop culture, average age of childbirth was pretty consistently early-mid 20s, child marriages didn't mean they immediately went and tried to have kids, and sometimes may not even have their ceremony till a decade later, the marriage being an economic deal after all. Alongside that, they often were only capable of having children later in life then we see now due to nutritional differences) they were still navigating the beggining of what would be their trade, maybe they were in school and just got out, maybe their were a soldier, etc. If anything I'd say what maturity level we consider an "adult" now is a lot less then the impressions one would get looking at sources from say the 19th century.

Vaguely young adult is the impression I get for most characters with how SEGA treats them these days. Tails is the only member of the main cast who I could see as younger than the others, and even then he'd have to be at least a teenager.
Cream is basically the only character that is still obviously a child, since that's one of her defining character traits.

This is why I think ages don't matter in cartoons for these kinds of characters. The creators and the series bible says they're 12 but they act and sound an late 20-something making references to thinks no 12 year old would make.
Amy Rose is often depicted living alone in the city. She shops in the shopping district and has a house there in battle. Her outfit is also definitely based on the city pop aesthetic the series had at the time. And with the existence of cream and her mother it really puts a degree of separation between them. Cream is treated like a little girl who lives with her mom and needs to be accompanied by a guardian. Amy lives alone and is treated like a member of society. And that just doesn’t make sense, even in universe, if Amy is meant to be 12.
IP/Franchise holders really need to stop actually putting official ages. It brings nothing but headache and it's often never relevant to whatsver story is being told. Mario generally has the right idea to just ignore it entirely (outside of Miyamoto interviews where he says he's probably around 24-25, but even that isn't really set in stone)

Amy being 12 was always sort of low-key used as justification for why Sonic never had interest in her. From his perspective, she's a child. Some writers didn't like this element, so a lot of them ignored her age, because most writers seem to ship the two. This was even a thing on the Japanese side of things, and there was always at least like one person in Sega or whatever who shipped the two and wanted to ignore Amy's age. And now all these people got their wish and Sonic Channel wiped the ages out. Problem is just because they did that doesn't mean Sonic will ever reciprocate, as Sonic will never go steady with anyone in in the game canon.

They do. They have separate pages for each version of a character. Pre-reboot Amy's listed as "11 (physically 17)", AOSTH Tails is listed as "4 and a half" and SatAM Tails is listed as "10". All those numbers check out for those versions of those characters.
