they should have introduced this guy as a villain or at least an antagonist in the shazam movie. He didn't need to lose or anything but as it stands, no one knows who tf this character is. There's no setup to it and they are clearly banking on The Rock to sell it. I'm not sure he's a big enough draw on his own. If they movie is really good, it could be a good play but that's a big 'if.'

Very stupid, if true. They share the same mythos, and the left and right hands not knowing what the other is doing is frequently fatal. Not appearing in Shazam makes sense as the tone would have been wrong for the depiction of the character and the tone they want to set for him, and that when they do get introduced it should be like a thunder clap, lighting cracks out and rapidly heats the air and is explosive.
But this isn't just anyone, it's Franchise Viagra, and he's a narcissist with exceedingly little charisma and is excessively abundant in hubris. Him calling shots is bad.

Isn't Black Adam's story stronger/more compelling without all the Shazam stuff? Like, wouldn't Joker be a better, more serious movie completely stand alone, just the story of Arthur Fleck taking place in New York City, say, without all the distracting Batman connections forced in?

    >“When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one movie,” Johnson said. “Now that was the goal — so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.’ It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam.”

“I said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here. It’s very unpopular’ because everybody thought, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s go make this movie.’ I said, ‘I really think that you should make ‘Shazam!,’ make that movie on its own in the tone that you want. And I think we should separate this as well.'”

    >That sentiment prompted Johnson to make a phone call voicing discomfort with the idea. He explained that Black Adam and Shazam are fundamentally different characters, and introducing them both in the same movie would be a disservice to both of them.

The problem is that Shazam in its second film and the director of the franchise hasn't even met The Rock. The first time they shared a room was the recent SDCC and they didn't even talk. The director is completely in the dark and can't reference Black Adam in any way.

Only if you don't know him. I can smell from a mile away that he wanted that in order to not share the movie with any other famous star and/or risk losing the pay out.

True, but good to see DC not jumbling things from the get-go. It would have been another Justice League, which means a gutted movie that would not have been as good (I liked that ZSJL was redone into a 4hr movie because of that; OG JL was a mess).

Rocky was right. Shazam was comfy and put the focus on Shazam growing up and into himself. Let Black Adam do his own thing and then put them in the same movie. They're going to make 20 capeshit movies a year, why make them all slush pile teamups/fights?

        >needlessly
No. The story they adapted has Black Adam as the villain with Sivana in a minor role where he frees him. Now it's clear why they just cut Black Adam and gave his powers to Sivana

Having the rock as Black Adam is just going to ruin it. He's too far up his ass and there is probably some shit clause in his contract that Black Adam can't lose or something.

The idea of having a 'Black' villain is repulsive. It implies that all black people are villains which is not the case. Bravo for The Rock and DC for recognizing and forestalling this misperception.

I think The Rock sees Black Adam as a cool anti-hero who can lead a franchise, with emphasis on Hero. He wants to remove all references to how he was a bad guy and only wants to focus on the anti-HERO aspects of the story. A completely moronic and dumb move that is in line with the short sighted vision of DC/WB in trying to imitate the MCU without laying the groundwork.
